Overjoyed

This will be quick because I am just too overjoyed to sit still.

Are you ready?

Wait, will you take a deep breath and let out a loud “Yipeeee!” for me please?

I came from another doctor yesterday (Dr. Canlas) to get a 2nd opinion on my meniscus problem and to have my right shin checked and he basically told me this:

1) My knee and shin pain are common running injuries. I only need to strengthen and stretch my leg muscles to avoid them.
2) I never had a meniscus problem. (Can you believe it?!)
3) I can continue running all I want.

Woooah, I was definitely not ready to receive such great news! I was resigned to running with my broken knee and getting arthroscopic surgery in the long run. Lo and behold, I won’t even need it after all.

Dr. Canlas put me on 3x a week rehab (which started today) for two weeks and hopefully things will be better for me.

For now, this is all I can say: Hi ho, Hi ho, it’s off to Clark I go. See you there!

  1. If a terrain is used to describe your training, I would call it “undulated” — haha! (sorry,…a term I come across all the time reading about the hk marathon review). Well ganon din kasi ako–I have my moments. Anyway great news that you are now in your “upcycle”. I was told before that most knee problems are not because of teh knee but actually any of those numerous muscles that connect to the knee. I will ask my trainor whom he can recommend in Alabang for strength training. He also gives me great tips on stengthening muscles where I never though existed (or at least not functional until you start long distance runs). Alabang does not have a pool though…I suggest you ask for a memebership program that allows you to use the RCBC facilities at times.

  3. that’s great, great news indeed!!! i’m thinking a little variety to your workout should help with the knees, like cycling one day, swimming the next. tri it out :) good luck in clark, are you going to subic too the following week?

Maybe I’ll see you during the Philippine Int’l Marathon then :-) I’m doing the half though, haven’t been doing much of the weekly long runs…

  8. Yipeeeee! Please remember to continue the rehab exercises even after the 3 weeks are over. In the long run it will help you have stronger and healthier knees.

p.s. if you run by San Bernardino you can run past the shrine of Mary and there is a soft trail that runs parallel to Batangas North all the way to Acacia. Approximate 400 meters of soft running surface. Every little bit helps. But don’t run there when its wet. It can get muddy.

    See you at the races.

  9. sometimes we analyze our injury to much ( i myslf is a victim of this ). but when you see an expert / doctor the solution is so simple pala. There are also some running discomforts that we just have to learn to live with. Think about it if you run almost everyday more than 10k plus there are really aches and pain in your run which is really part of running. If running was so easy then”whats the fun in it”. Remember we runners are a different bread so injurie etc are really part of our journey in this life of running. take care

  11. hey, that’s great that you’re ok! hmm… maybe you’ve just been over-training trying to rush into making it for the marathon this feb, that’s why you’ve been hurting more recently… btw, you don’t really have to give up races for your long runs… you could still go for a long run by extending your run beyond the set distance for the race… that way, you can have your banana and still eat it… keep on running!

  12. Hey thanks everyone!

Tina, i’ll settle for “undulating”. It’s far better than “downhill” haha

Ben, go Team Injured Fast Runners go!

Levy, yeah that’s my dream training. Life just gets in the way right now :) Can’t make it to subic. :(

Bea, looking forward to meeting you at Pasig. Yup, it’ll probably be a half marathon for me too.

Roadrat, louder please. Can’t hear you kasi medyo malayo ka! hahaha :)

Mon, salamat! During the tough times, it’s good to hear words of wisdom from you to keep me sane.

Maryanne, was i obviously depressed when I bumped into you at national? Now, I’ll be completely opposite!

Mark, i’ll definitely look for that patch of heaven for our feet.

Patrick, I hear ya. The injury taught me a lot too so at least there was some good that came out of it.

    Marga, see ya!

Joe, yes my legs are just not ready for a full blown marathon. I’ll be more patient, work on strengthening them and hopefully get to run the marathon within the year. Crossing my fingers.

  13. Easy does it TBR. Let your body catch up to you. Glad nothing major is wrong. Now you can continue to strengthen and build flexibility.
