Who’s Going to Subic?

To all those joining the Subic Marathon this weekend, I bid you farewell.  May the spirit of the running gods be with and carry you on his wings to make you run, nay soar, like an eagle in flight.  I shant be with you but I shall keep you in my prayers.  Let you not stumble on a rock, fall prey to faster runners, or worse suffer in pain from an evil injury.

So much drama.  I was just carried away by the excitement of this all even if I can’t make it to Subic.  All I wanted to say was GOOD LUCK!  Looking forward to hearing stories from you all.

  3. Whew I thought the drama was real. You should go anyway, cheer, clap, whatever. You can still have a good time if you can fit it in the schedule. This is your sport now, go watch, support and celebrate. I bet you take home a whole lot of inspiration if you do go.

  4. Baldrunner, I’m sure you’ll make it in sub-2! Good luck!

Marga, ganyan talaga para mas malakas ang impact! Hahaha.

Awww rick, I really wish I could go. My driver aka hubby is off on a camping trip with my son. I wouldn’t dare drive to subic on my own in the wee hours of the morning. They know I’ll be with them in spirit. Uh oh, there goes the drama again. haha

  5. I’m with you on this one miss jaymie. :)

Can’t go to subic, so I’m just doing an LSD session in UP Diliman. Coach and Joms might come too. You are more than welcome to join us.

  6. sayang, di ka nakasama jaymie, was hoping to meet you in person :) anyway, just got back from subic and here are some thoughts i’d like to share with you and your readers:

    – Nothing like Dulce (asia’s diva) to knock the cobwebs off at 5am
    – Mayor Gordon: “Laki pala ng prize money, kaya ang dami sumali…race for the money”. I think i speak for most of the runners at subic that we run for fun. In fact, kahit walang prize money at stake, sasali pa rin kami di ba?
    – Why are there no more water stations from 12 or 14k onwards?
    – After the 21k race, I felt that it was more than 21k. In fact, I overheard some runners saying that it was actually 23 or 24k. Is this true? Maybe those with the Nike things that measure distance can help me out here.
    – Thank God for Pocari sweat, 2 pandesals, one boiled egg and one banana at the end of the race. Sure beats one yakult :)
    – Those Kenyans can really fly.

  7. Hi Ms. Jaymie,

Hope to meet ‘thebullrunner’ sana. Sayang. :) :D

    Hi Levy,

Based from my nike+ spork kit 24.55km :D

  8. Yes its actually 23.57 kilometers! That’s according to my garmin forerunner 305. Most runners had slower times. The winner for the ladies 42k had a time of 3:20 plus. Clark’s lady winner only did it in 3 hours. So instead of 42, it must have been 47.

I read Bald runner’s blog. With a time of 2:12 for 23.57km, he’s sub 2 hours for sure for 21km. As for me, its my very first 21km run. I did a 2:04.17 and a 2:20.59 for the 23.57km.

Im glad I brought my fuel belt along. Imagine no water stations past 14km!

  9. Ok, just uploaded my data at motionbased. I believe the distance computed by the site based from waypoints I’ve sent is more accurate.

    Subic 21km is really 23.81km.

    Comments on the race

    1. Why didnt we receive any instruction or a set of rules in the race packet? The girl who released my packet told me to be there by 4am. Im glad I asked Lala for the other details and she confirmed it the afternoon before race day.

    2. Water stations were nowhere in site after 14km. One station we passed ran out of water too. I saw some runners suffer cramps and 2 collapsed. Could it be from dehydration?

    3. There were no motorcycle riders from the race committee to immediately attend to those who needed medical care.

    4. 2 loops were given at 2 points before the 11 or 12 km turn. No loops during the turn. Not quite sure how they can tell if you did go the very end of the lap.

    5. No water available at the finish line, only Pocari Sweat.

    6. Huge discrepancy in distance covered by runners versus what was declared. Whats so difficult in getting the distance right?

  10. Jaymie,

Kindly insert the motionbased link above. http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/4816622

    : )

Its a free service. Im curious to see your stats during the Clark run. Can you upload as well?

  11. You were missed TBR!

amendments to the comments on the race
    1. yes looks like all the distances are longer… just running the 10km and a marshall was shouting last 500 meters but then hoping i reach the finish line it was forever! Just the oval track we have to run 200m so definitely the other 300m on the road was more!

    2. No medical tent in the area… you will need to go look and ask the Police where it is until they point you the mobile rescue van.

  12. Let’s see.

NEGATIVES: Half marathon was actually 24km. No water stations beyond 14km. Seeming absence of medical care on the course and difficulty in locating medical tent. No water at the finish line.

POSITIVES: Dulce. Pocari sweat. Watching the kenyans.

Hmmm…sounds like there’s room for a lot of improvement for next year’s race. I hope you still had a lot of fun running despite all the issues.

  13. Ugh, the Subic Marathon wasn’t one of the best races I’ve been to. So many kids required to run who actually just walked. I wouldn’t really mind much, but they walked in herds and were just plain sagabal.

I don’t really know who Dulce is, but being squashed in the midst of sooo many people (halu-halo ang 3, 5, 10, and 21k runners) while she’s caterwauling gave me a migraine. No offense to Dulce fans.

They could have done a better job. It was an international race, after all.

5k was actually 6.2 – 6.5k. But I was a happy happy pepe because my PR was good. All the annoying stuff before the race faded away. (But I still have to scratch my itch to b*tch about this)

Clark was way better, IMO. And being with the h@ppyfeet and team Air Force people was priceless. Great company turns a bad start into a good one. :D

  14. Dulce! Hahahaha (Natawa talaga ako as I read your post) Too bad, I didnt hear her sing. I got there 2 minutes before the start. I forgot to bring my old alarm clock but my Treo did wake me up. After checking in (quick signature by an official), I attempted to tighten my laces. The last 4 minutes (as announced by the official) suddenly sped up to the last 10 seconds. So I just had to do tie my laces as fast as I could. Well, I wasn’t fast enough.

Do you know if the Yankz lace system is available locally? http://yankz.com/ Lock lace is the other brand. I just checked with the local stores and they dont have it.

Despite the negative feedback I posted earlier, I enjoyed the race! It was my first 21km and seeing the Kenyans run together with our elite is one of the highlights. I was also amazed by the number of fruit bats flying over the trees. I’ve never seen so many bats! The uphill portion zapped most of our leg power. I tried drafting but the runner in front would look at me with this “what are you doing behind my back” stare. I did get too close. hehehe It would have been a funny kodak moment. I dont know if it really made it easier to climb or it was his pace that made me go as fast as him.

  15. Hi Jaymie
Another positive: seeing those fruit bats flying in the TRIBOA area was magnificent! All of the runners were in awe. Buti nalang I was slow…I had more airtime with the bats.

    Another negative: Race started late.

  16. Marga, my new word for the day—caterwauling. Thanks for expanding my vocabulary! haha. As for Subic, I think whenever they use the word “international” in their race, we tend to expect much more from them. At least I did at clark hence my disappointment. I just hope all race organizers learn from their mistakes and make significant improvements in future races. Kawawa naman tayong runners diba?

Mark, a friend gave me Boa Constrictors similar to Yankz. It’s available at Chris sports for P135. Glad you still enjoyed the race…and the fruit bats! I’m assuming you were running behind a man when you got too close. Had that been a woman you might have gotten not just a stare but a slap too! haha

Beni, that must’ve been an awesome sight. I hope they didn’t poop on runners though. haha

bullrunner said on Jan 22 08 at 10:17 AM Reply
  17. Nyek, I just ordered Yankz in Amazon. Glad I read your reply, I was shocked to see other items in included for shipping. All is well now, got those cancelled except for the Yankz. Nope, they’re not new running shoes. Im still waiting for Asics speedstar 3 coming this June. : )

I cant find any info on BOA Constrictors. A quick search in google gives me info on snakes. Its not even on chrissports.net I did find this though http://www.boatechnology.com Not sure if that’s what they’re selling.

I cant say that I would be better off drafting behind a woman. She might be insulted by my assumption that she’s wider than me. hehehe I was actually looking for bigger runners so I can just hide behind them. Wind kinda picked up at some point during the climb. Hmm, if I did draft behind a woman and did get slapped that would have been a first. It would be hard to make her believe that I wasnt staring. hehehehe But the guy would’ve punched me too. This is silly, no more drafting next time. Not sure if it works anyway. Does it have any effect on efficiency?

Based on my garmin, we climbed 40m 60m 60m 40m. 4 climbs for a guy who didnt train for it is more than a handful. So congrats to all those who finished the rather longer than usual race. I was just happy to be safe at the finish line. : )
