On Missing The Bull Run

The race was named after me (at least that’s what I’d like to think) so it was unfortunate that I missed it. How did you all do in “The Bull Run: Takbo Para sa Ekonomiya”?

Ah, there were so many reasons why I wanted to be at this race:

1) It’s my namesake.

2) My first job was as a research analyst at the stockmarket. This was my chance to be a part of it again in some way.

3) “Takbo Para sa Ekonomiya”…Oh sure, I am more than willing to contribute to the growth of our economy. If running could somehow help propel the stockmarket (where I’m losing money as we speak) then that would have been a win-win situation for me.

4) I love races. Big or small. Organized or chaotic. I’m in.

Too bad then that my injury is showing little signs of improvement. The past two weeks, I have run 0 kilometers and biked a depressing 20 mins (total of all my warm ups) and yet there is still some soreness in the knee and tightness in the muscles. I’ve been strength training, stretching, praying and whining yet nothing seems to work. Worst of all, I feel bloated and cranky. It irks me that I have to eat so much less now and still my jeans feel a bit too snug. I just have to have my cardio soon or my kids will see me as their favorite dessert: jello.

Tomorrow I hope to visit the doctor again and beg him to give me a magic antidote to this way too long injury. If he does have one, I’ll let you know. I’ll probably sell it for a million a piece.

  1. Jaymie – No you won’t turn into Jello overnight… It takes years of inactivity to perfect the Jello look.

Cycling leaves you sore as well, how about the rowing machine or swimming?

    Patience, patience and patience.

  2. This race literally had your name on it TBR. So you were a stock market analyst circa 1997? That wasn’t probably the best time to be in the market :-)

This was just my second race after Clark, and I was a little disappointed since it wasn’t as well organized. First of all, it started pretty late, around 6:15AM compared to the announced 5:30AM start. The first batch sent off were the fun runners, then the 3K then the 5K/10K. It would’ve made a lot more sense to do it the other way around. There were lots of fun runners just walking and generally blocking the way.

Secondly, the announcer didn’t clarify that 5/10K should’ve started at the same time. He just kept announcing “5K runners”, and the rest of us were waiting for the 10K sendoff. It was about 20-30 seconds later when some organizers told us that we should start running already.

The water station at around 6K ran out of water too, good thing there was another station at around 8K since the sun was already rising and it was getting hot at that time.

Overall it was fun though I didn’t get to beat my time at Clark, probably because the terrain was not as flat and it was also a little warmer.

Hope your knees get better. A triathlete friend of mine was cautioning me against overtraining to prevent injuries. He also emphasized cross training for overall strength/fitness.

  3. I feel for you girl. Somehere in the late 80’s i couldnt run for about 2 -3 months for personal reasons. Man that really killed me. i thought it would be the end of the world. I just wanted to die ( literally ). but slowly i got back into it and was hungrier than before. Give it time and you will bounce back im sure of that. P.S. every saturday i look for you on the road in AVA im sure when we bump into each other again you will wear your runningShield.

  5. Got a new PR! : ) Thanks to subic’s 21, I finished strong sprinting the last 800km with a 3:26 min/km speed with an average pace of 5:15. I could have made better a time but I wasn’t confident with the 10km distance. Baka kasi sobra na naman like in previous races. I’m also glad there were less chicks passing me this time (real runners and triathletes). Sen Pia Cayetano was one of them. Tangkad nya pala. Bodyguard was strong too. They passed me a few minutes before the end. I tried to sprint and overtake but it was too late. As for water stations, I heard some runners drink from the tabo as cups were all out. I suggest you invest on a fuel belt. To prevent it from bouncing, just make sure the heavy part is in front.

Jaymie, just follow the program they gave you. I hope tou find an alternative for your cardio workout. Your heart and lungs need to workout as well. 20 minutes on the bike is too short. Is it ok for you to skip rope? You can actually burn twice as much calories on this compared to running. Aim for 2000 reps in 20 minutes. : )

Will there be a 21k event this february? Parang wala ata.

  6. twas really unfortunate you can’t join your own race =(

This was my 1st race of the year and i think i actually did good despite the chaotic start and the unconventional route.

Thanks for posting another list of races for this year! I think i’ll be running in the GIG run! Hope to run with you guys there!

Ow btw TBR hope ur doctor find that magic antidote! =)

  7. Hey Jamie, it was good to be there. Good practice for brokers who want to run away from angry clients after the recent market crash. BTw, Fernando was not there. I saw a few executives from Ayala Corp though, I think it is one business group who is quite supportive of this event. Hope to see you again soon. Take it easy. The road will always be there.

  8. Try to focus more on biking and swimming for now Jaymie. At least, when you’re in shape to go back to running again you can have all the other benefits of your cross training. Consider this as part of your plan to balance your training for your future triathlete career. =) I’m sure we’ll see the bullrunner back in action in no time.

  9. Mark, I wish swimming was more convenient for me. I’m not a member of Alabang Country club nor Palms so it’s a hassle to drive to pools in makati or pasig.

DATC, thanks for the update. Funny about the announcer and the mishap for 5k/10k runners. I’ll bet you that announcer doesn’t run.

Patrick, thanks. When I start running again and we bump into each other, it’ll be like a reunion of sorts. I might just cry hahaha.

E-rod, about the magic formula, don’t worry I’ll give you a discount.

Mark, congrats congrats! Isn’t Sen. Pia’s bodyguard a runner too? I heard that from somewhere. 21k in Feb? Parang wala nga ata. I thought Pasig had one but I was mistaken.

Kimbo, good luck at the races. GIG should be fun.

Tina, I see you kept your eyes out for Fernando too. Hahahaha. Well, glad he wasn’t there or else I would’ve had a #5 reason above.

Joms, yeah I agree. I’m thinking I should prioritize a beginners triathlon as my goal instead of a marathon since it’ll keep me from injury. How’s your injury doing?

  10. hmm… seems you might indeed have some injury since you’ve been bothered by it for quite a long time. also, minimal movement is causing you discomfort (20 minutes of warm up biking shouldn’t be causing you any discomfort). i agree that you need to go back to your doctor so he can check you up some more. some tests might have to be done to find out what’s really wrong with you. btw, how were you diagnosed with your meniscus problem before? i suggest you take some pain meds (mefenamic or ibuprofen) cause it will help control some of the inflammation and promote healing. well, though you still have to rest for now… keep on running!

  11. Jaymie, if the pain is more than week old , then you really have an injury. But don’t worry, you are still young. Usually at your age, the injury will take to heal for about 60 days. On the forty fifth day , you will notice that your knees is getting stronger. Iba kung 48 years old ka na like me. It seems the healing takes a year to heal. Parang sobrang bagal magrepair and i don’t know if sometimes it stops repairing on a bad day. Then it resumes one week later.

  12. Joeupcm, it wasn’t even 20 mins. on the bike. That was my total for the week. So it was 5 mins each time! Argh. My old doctor concluded I had a meniscus problem just by feeling my knee then said i should have arthroscopic surgery. My therapists now are quite surprised he didn’t even do an MRI.

Master Mon, 60 days! That’s toooooooooooooooooooo long! Hay naku, I shall shift to swimming in the meantime. As for you, 48 ka na pala. Akala ko early 40s. Uuuy :)

  13. uyy. nagbibisikleta na siya. :)

hey. give me a call if you’re already brave enough to bike around the metro. :)

  14. Jaymie – did they adjust height of the saddle whey you rode the exercise bike. If it is too low it will put too much strain and hurt your knee even more.

Have your gym instructors set it to the right height. At full extension your leg should only be slightly bent.

Also please use light resistance and spin at 80 rpm. Strap on your feet and when you cycle try to maintain constant resistance. You pull and push with your leg. Most people just push down and they don’t pull. You can ask your cyclist friends to give you tips.

    Remember light resistance.

    I hope you recover fast.

    Regards Mark

  15. jaymie,
as the old runners say, listen to your body.
    note of the different signs.
parang kotse yan, kailanga din ng rest.
anyway, as of now breakdown maintenance ka . . . next time practise . . . preventive maintenance.

take is easy, bike muna, walk . . . then RUN again!

  16. uyyyy!!!! beginner’s tri in alabang! :)

it really takes time and even more dedication in this kind of situation. It’ll be frustrating and again even more frustrating as days pass by without a workout and without a run. You will even hate people that you see running around while you are stuck on your bike doing your cardio workout. Tears will start to form when you see your gear shiny and clean. And you will surely cry when you take that first few steps and strides. not from happiness but from the pain it will cause. Again, you have to take it slow and just be consistent with training. You will be back hitting the ayala alabang roads in no time.

  17. ms.jaymie, yup. for the meantime, remove the strain from your knees. whilst i was injured, didn’t run as the doctor advised. but he allowed me to swim..so there..go go! do some laps now, and guaranteed..the “jello-look” and the crankiness won’t even dare knock your doors :-) tell me the magic concoction, if there is ok?

  18. awww…hold tight, don’t despair too much, that goes for the stocks too:) Hey do they have “water running” there? Some of my injured friends have done this.

  19. I know what you feel. I’m sure in time your knee will heal. And you will be able to run your best. I do believe in God’s healing power so let me pray for you: Lord I pray that you heal Jaymie’s knee and bless her with more PRs in the future. I pray that you would always aid her during her recovery. This we ask in Jesus’ mighty name. amen.

  20. oh my, 2 weeks without running?!? that’d drive me up the wall!
continue on with your yoga/pilates, and add some swimming too, that’ll get your heart pumping!

good luck but don’t rush it…
