On Cheating

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. I have committed a henious crime and I’m ready to pay the price—or perhaps I’m hoping I won’t have to if my dear guardian angel has pity over me.

Cheating

You see, when no one was looking, I cheated thrice…yes, three times!

Based on my Return to Running Schedule, which I promised to abide by at all cost, I was supposed to only “Walk for 20-40 minutes” five days this week. This is what I did instead:

Monday: Walked 30 mins. – CHECK
Tuesday: Rest (Actually, I was busy with work and the kids)
Wednesday: Walked 35 mins. – CHECK
Thursday: Swimming 2 hours in chilly water, Defrosting 22 hours
Friday: Walk 20 mins., Run 10 mins. – Jumped to Week 3! CHEATED!
Saturday: Rest (Busy, busy with work)
Sunday: Walk 20 mins, Run 15 mins. – Jumped to Week 4! CHEATED!
Monday: Walk 20 mins, Run 15 mins. – Jumped to Week 4! CHEATED!

Am I hurting myself for being impatient and stubborn? Perhaps. Am I happy about running again (albeit at a much slower pace) without feeling any pain and finally breaking a sweat after over a month of extreme bloatedness? Definitely. You couldn’t wipe the smile of my face over the weekend. Sure I missed the Pasig Marathon, but I was reunited with my beloved running so nothing could pull me down.

In fact, I was so elated with the my little triumphs last week that I completely abandoned the gym, yogilates, and the drills my therapist taught me. I know I should be doing all of these to prevent the injuries from recurring, but I guess I was just too excited to hop on the treadmill once again. See, I told you I was bad and I wasn’t exaggerating!

For now, I expect to continue with Week 4 (even when I should technically be on Week 2) and incorporate weights, drills, and swimming back in the sched. While you may be screaming “The woman has no shame nor remorse!”, I am turning a deaf ear and praying that I am doing what I feel is right for my body. Yes, I have cheated and I know I am hurting no one else but myself. And, should my injury rear its ugly head again, I have no one else to blame but my husband—er I mean, myself.

Forgive this bull-headed runner for being just too happy to run again.

  1. Hello there Jaymie,
Just wondering as to why you changed your logo- the bull with the pink running shoes to a mean looking raging one? Dont get me wrong though, i’m a fan and i love your site and all… just wanted to know..

  2. Armand, I wanted to keep the pink one. But, when I asked my son to choose between the two, he chose this mean one! If I get more comments like yours, I’ll tell him about it and ask for his “permission” to bring the pink one back! haha

    Running Priest! Hahahaha! So funny.

  3. Wow, “excited to hop on the treadmill”. I’m not sure those are words I could ever utter. It must have been bad!!

  4. Hi Jaymie. I kinda like your new banner. :) About cheating, well, I’ve read from a Marathon Handbook that you don’t have to follow your Diary from cover to cover. You know your body more than your diary, so just listen to your body. So if your body tells you to rest, then rest. :)

  6. Jaymie,

Its best to follow the program. There’s a reason why it was scheduled that way. Speaking from personal experience, I wish I just followed my doctor back then (reference to my slipped disc injury). So when I dislocated my shoulder (thrice in 3 minutes) while paddling in 98. A low back strong wave generated by a catamaran hit my kayak and I tried to low brace to prevent a capsize. I had to go to rehab a few weeks later. There were no shortcuts this time. I followed what the Sports Med doctor (Dr. Jenny) of the PSC gave me. In that same year, I was able to go and compete at the 13th Asian Games.

The consequences may not appear this year or any time soon. But surely it will show its ugly head a few years later. Just be patient, you’ll get there. As much as I want to cheer you on, its best to just follow those you hired to help you get better. : )

  7. Taki, thankfully my body’s telling me it’s still fine despite the cheating! :)

    Jan, thanks a lot!

Markfb, oh you’re so good and you sound right but I don’t want to listen to you! :) Here’s the reason why I feel I can cheat. The program I’m using isn’t from my doctor. I picked it up from the web so it was self-imposed. Secondly, my doctor and therapists actually never stopped me from running. They said I could run as much as I want unless I couldn’t take the pain the obviously I should stop. Having said that, did I convince you now that it’s okay for me to cheat? hehe

  8. I’m kind of with Markfb on this, you should follow the program. However now that you disclosed that it was actually a self-imposed program and not a doctor prescribed one I guess that’s ok. Go with how you feel but go SLOW. Like being sick, go easy unless you want a relapse. I definitely would not abandon the rehab stuff. That’s like stopping your antibiotics after 3 days because you feel better already. We all know how that plays out eventually.

I call it “gambling” when I do it and I roll the dice often, in training and races. Haha sometimes it just feels so good to throw common sense and reason in the back seat and just let if all fly – bahala na. But while I win more than I lose it always sucks to lose.

At least you know exactly what your are doing and ready to accept the consequences. Might want to let hubby know that there is a partial chance of him being blamed for something:)

  9. Hey rick, yes I started doing my drills yesterday and I’m going to the gym tomorrow. Swam today so I managed to stay away from the treadmill.

Thanks to you and Mark! I appreciate the advise you give no matter how reluctant I am to accept it.

As for the hubby, he’s out right now getting insurance for my knees. haha

  12. Jaymie – If it does not hurt then go and run but make sure you continue the drills and yogilates.

    Marga, ikaw din.

    MarkP, yes coach!

Oknoy, may live karaoke sample ba niyan when I see you? :) It was unbelievably cold in the pool. Even after I showered and all, I was shivering. I didn’t even need an aircon in the car on the way home. Wore a sweater the entire day while my kids wondered why I felt so cold. I felt like meat defrosting from a freezer!

Banggi, how’re you? Didn’t mention it above but it was actually the text you sent that you were running already that got me thinking maybe I should try running a bit already. Hahaha

  17. hey do you have schedule na for the adidas run for this year?

And may i say that for me, the best organizer for last years’ run is none other than “the new balance 25 kms race” done in clark pampanga…and the worst is the pasig heritage 42 kms marathon last feb 24, 2008.
