On Your Mark

“Mama, I want my blanket.” she murmured.

“Uh huh…” I replied in my sleep.

“Mama, I want my blanket!” my daughter screamed.

I opened my eyes, peeked at the alarm clock that failed to wake us, and yelled to the hubby “Get up! We’re late!” followed by a few curse words that you yourself would have said in the same situation.

It was 5:40 a.m. A mere 20 minutes to the start of On Your Mark at NBC Tent where the hubby and I were registered for 5k. I ran towards the bathroom, ran back to the bed to pull the blanket over my daughter, and sprinted again back to the bathroom to get dressed in breakneck speed.

We arrived at the race at 6:07 a.m., 7 minutes after around 1,600 registered runners left for the 5k and 10k races. The hubby and I decided to continue with the race sans the race bibs. He made it his mission to search for his two colleagues who I had registered for and, as a result of my loser alarm clock, were forced to run without their numbers.

We ran side by side at a s–l–o–w 7 min/km pace. It was a bonding experience for us, but I wished we could move just a wee bit faster. The hubby, you see, doesn’t care about his time and I respect him for that. It’s good that he keeps me “grounded” as I teeter on the edge of obsessiveness over my running time all the time. He runs with me for fun and remains to be passionate about nothing else but golf. So, for the first few kilometers, we ran together at this relaxed, easy pace.

By the time we reached 2km and met the 10k runners near Market! Market!, I was feeling antsy. Fernando Zobel ran past me at full speed. (By the way, may I just say he is no longer my crush as I have noticed too many a women runners going gaga over him. My crush should belong to me and only me. Hence, I shall revert back to the hubby for now! hah!) Then, Lala Calma and Mark B. flashed by. And a little later on, Bald Runner flew by me too looking all cool in his slimmer physique. I couldn’t take it! I suddenly missed running 10k at a more challenging pace.

A few minutes later, I gave in and asked hubby if I could run ahead. “Go ahead” he replied in his usual laidback manner. “Okay, meet you in a few seconds!” So, we had around 4 or 5 rounds of that mini interval training for me where I would run ahead, slow to a walk and wait for hubby, then run fast again.

Nearing the end, I didn’t even bother to cross the finish line. I ended the run at around 35 mins. barely evaluating the results from my Garmin. Yet again, this was not a real race for me. I was just grateful to be spared of any pain or discomfort in the knee. Well, that at least deserves a little Yey! from me.

Where was Rufa Mae? Dingdong Dantes? Nowhere to be seen. Dang, I would’ve ran GK had I known there was no juicy showbiz chismis over here. (Kidding!) Oh well, at least they gave out great loot: a shoe bag which contained a shirt, wristband and sticker.

To friends Jujet and Lala, congratulations for coming in 1st and 3rd respectively in your categories!
To Happy Feet, I missed you! Ang lungkot pala kapag wala kayo!
To the hubby, congrats on your 2nd race!

  1. Experienced being late in a race too with my girlfirend in the Pasig Marathon. I came from Taft and had to pick her up in Pasig then go back to Quirino Grandstand. Traffic was a killer.

Conclusion: No race. Same as what you did, we just ran without our race bibs. Just had fun.

We’re still looking forward to our next race together.

  2. hi jaymie,

it was great to finally see you at a race. i think i witnessed that exchange you had with your hubby at the market market intersection (both of you wearing black, right?), but was huffing and puffing so hard to even muster a ‘Hi’. Just want to thank you and all the runners who joined the GMA run, sana hindi kayo nagsisi kahit wala gaanong artista. Isipin niyo na lang nakatulong kayo sa Womens Crisis Center :) Like i mentioned in baldrunner’s blog, WCC really needs all the help it can get. Thanks again. Till the next race :)

  5. Jaymie,

Congrats on getting your better half to at least run with you. Ehem … ehem… di ata marinig ni Mrs ko. hehehe If you have no use for those mags, pahiram naman. : )

Btw, what’s with the all black attire?

  6. Josef, I guess it’s bound to happen to any of us at some point eh? Have fun at the next race…and I hope you guys are never late again. Such a hassle isn’t it?

Levy, glad to finally see you on the road and not by the pool! Glad to see your wife with you too. Is she getting into running too?

Marga, I don’t even dream of placing anywhere at this point. Kung mag place man, baka injured naman ulit the day after. Wasn’t able to spot HT. I think you should think of another nickname for him because he’ll probably figure it out if he happens to land on this blog or yours! :)

Chaia, yes you’re right. We miss you too. Buti pa happy feet walang fee to be a member noh?! :(

Mark, shucks you and levy noticed! The hubby and I quicky dressed up and we were out the door in 10 mins. When we were on our way, we looked at each other and realized we were matching! He was going to change his shirt but we decided otherwise thinking no one would notice! Oh well :)

  9. tbr, you’re really an inspiration…being that late, i’d just stay home…haha nice organized race…a lot of water to fight the heat…(its bad getting used to running at night huh)..anyways, kudos to the organizers, nice friendlier route having lesser jeeps around compared to running to the army gym…tbr, i bet your hubby was never late for a golf game! haha thats one character of golfers, they eat, sleep and dream golf…one lesson i learned though, wear your running watch to sleep and alarm it, have your cellphone alarm on, and make sure your phone ringer is on loud, and have a running partner call for a wake up call or to confirm you woke up…cant rely on one alarm, especially if its within reach of a golfer who’s not scheduled to play golf that day…uhmm…

  13. Marga, I’ll give you a mix of what Banggi drank on her “maga” night. hahaha

Superman, skinhead81…I’ll post it here if i receive it.

Mond, I shall follow your advice next time. 3 alarm clocks! Or maybe I should just tell my hubby we’ll be playing golf that morning so he’ll wake up even before I do! :)

Mark, I had my showbiz fix later in the day with S files and The Buzz so okay na!

  15. Wow! Its been a long time since I ran with the Zorro dude! :)
I haven’t seen him since the Yakult Run last year.

Does anybody know what’s the story behind this masked runner?
    What’s his secret identity?
Did he fall off his horse & decided to just run?
    Is he friend or foe?
Does he have an arch nemesis?
    What are his powers?
    Any weakness?

    Just curious…:)

By the way, where do I register for the global city run?

    Takbo lang ng Takbo

  17. Marga, hahaha i knew it. I couldn’t remember their new name! Shucks, di pala ako tunay na kapuso.

Fat Boy Slim, he’s a favorite topic in pinoy running groups. Yeah, it’s been a long time since I ran with him too. Check out my list of races for info on global city. I registered during OYM…they had a booth there.

Banggi, hahaha I thought you wouldn’t see that. Ask Marga to send you the friendster link and let’s see what you think about HT. Better yet, let’s wait for him at the next race.

  18. banggi, si HT ang pinakagwapong runner sa pilipinas. but of course, i’m biased. ang naging hirit lang ni jaymie “oh my ang katawan!!!”

  20. Hi,

Just wanted to join in with the conversations. Hope it’s okay. That was my first run at The Fort, the place is really good for running unlike the Phil Marathon where it was held at Roxas Blvd amidst all the smoke from the jeepneys. :)

I already called up the race director of the On Your Mark event regarding the results. Sorry guys, but according to them, they only timed the 1st three finishers and for the rest of us, they could only give the ranking. They’re still not finished with the rankings though, probably this week daw.

You can call up Adlai Asturiano at 9827777 local 8103 if you want to inquire about the rankings.

For the organizers, I suggest that you should also time all the finishers. Maybe, next time then.

See you guys at the Global Fun Run! :)

  22. No time?? Oh my. So thats why the clock was set at 23 or something like that when I finished. Good thing I set my SEK 580i’s pedometer when the race started. It gave me a distance of 9.9km. I also beat my goal of doing 10k in under 50mins. Woohoo.
