Right on Track

Most of my runs the past fortnight have been on the track. Aaaah, the track. What can I say? How can one oval bring so much joy and the same amount of pain at one time?

- My brand spankin’ new Mizuno Wave Precision and I on the first day we set foot on the track. Don’t laugh at the shimmering legs…I got carried away with the sunblock -

I love training on the track. Early in the morning, when half the city is asleep, there are extraordinary people who gather in this little oval to unleash their potential…and I simply feel fortunate to be among them. It’s awesome to be surrounded by athletes who are ten times stronger and a hundred times more dedicated than I am. The energy in the air is palpable and sometimes I secretly hope that their power is contagious.

When I run here, I am more focused. And, I train harder. (Or is it because I’m surrounded by generous coaches?)

Then, at the same time, I experience the pain. It’s the good kind of pain though, the kind that tells you you’re pushing your body to the limits and you’ll come out stronger after. The drills make me gasp for air. 20 to 25 sets of stair climbs make my quads tight and get me wobbling like a duck. And, the sprints…oh the sprints just leave me feeling utterly depleted, like a balloon that’s lost its air.

I leave each training session feeling exhausted but happy. I’m always relieved to know that I’ve worked hard yet my knee isn’t complaining. I seriously think that (knock on wood) I’m heading out of the danger zone with regards to my knee injury. Two full weeks of running, swimming, and gym without the slightest hint of the evil runner’s knee! Looks like I’m right on track (no pun intended) for full recovery.

  2. so it was you at the oval…i knew you looked familiar. hello and am happy to know that the track surface is working out for you. despite the limited scenery i am more than happy to trade that for less impact on the knees. the people training are my scenery.

  3. Hey Jaymie! Ano ba yan? Nagkakasalisi tayo… Coach Rio told me he say you again. I’ve been training with him lately also at the track. I’m there MWF. I’m guessing you’re there on the other days! Haha!

I’m looking forward to finally meeting you one of these days… Hopefully before or on Runnex@25 :D

  6. You nailed it, so much joy and pain in one little oval. My workouts are on Tuesday evenings. Sometimes I come in tired and dragging but then I see all the folks training and they really lift me up. Feels good to be out there sweating it out with them. The pain of the intervals takes care of the boredom.

  7. Marga, I still prefer running on the road. But I enjoy drills and sprints on the track.

    Jnacino, same here! :)

Passion Runner, talaga?! Oh, I’m sure we’ll eventually meet. Hopefully within this year hahaha

Ben, see you there soon! Gumising ka!

    Mark, never was! :)

Rick, I don’t think I can train that hard at night. There would be nothing left for me to give!

  9. Jerome, I still have my beloved Wave Creation. Still use it. I alternate both shoes especially since I run on the field sometimes and occasionally get my shoes soaked…grrr.

I used to love my Wave Creation so much that I wasn’t willing to try any other model. But, the Wave Precision is turning out to be great too—lighter and bouncier. One can actually love two shoes at the same time pala!

  10. Me and my wife had been joining races for the past few weeks now.

You had mentioned an oval and some trainors –working out in the mornings.

We wish to join this meet-up and practices.. where is this oval and what time do you guys start?

Thank you for your assistance and more power to your wonderful and informative blog.

  11. I noticed that the tongues of your shoes also tend to veer to the left and right. Has anybody noticed that?

I swear the tongue of my racing flat (left shoe) strangely misaligns while running while the right shoe’s stays in place.

    KEEP RUNNING!

  13. Hi Bullrunner!
I’m really interested to get into serious training for running, and I think track workouts might just be the thing. Where do you train and is there like a fee or something?

    Thanks!

  14. We have the same shoes Jaymie. I have the wave and precision. i use the precision for road races but i use wave or rider for training. since you’re using the precision on tracks, the shoes should not strain your legs too much. but when you go back to concrete better avoid them because they do not have the same support of the creation that you’re used to.

  18. Atty Jon, it does but it never bothers me. Now, I was told the new Mizuno shoes have the tongues attached to the sides so they don’t slide. Am I right?

Tina, thanks for the tips! I wish I could get my hands on the Wave Creation 9!

Mark, I haven’t thought of that. Hmmm…let’s see.

Master Mon naman eh. I gained 5 lbs when I was sidelined by the injury. Halata ba sa legs? :)

  20. Galing ah! How could Mon have noticed that you gained weight just by looking at your shins? Hmmm… or baka nang-huhuli lang siya :P

  22. Hi mel!
Rizal memorial is undergoing renovation. But yes when it is done it is open to the public. but on limited hours only unless they have changed the schedule. they open at 6am and close at 6pm. The last time their fee was PhP 15.00 (one to sawa) but you have to exit once they close.
I think if we have more runners requesting that it be open beyond 6pm they might extend the hours. they dont open the lights as in UL.
I live nearby that’s why i would rather do my interval workouts in rizal rather than in UL.
