Terrible Accident

This photo jolted me out of my seat this morning. It has nothing to do with running, but it occurred during a race. This could have happened to runners. It could happen to anyone. So disturbing…and sickening.

MexicoCrash

The Associated Press (CNN) reported that a car plowed into a weekend bicycle race along a highway near the US-Mexico (MONTERREY) border, killing one and wounding 10 others, police said.

The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed in the race, said police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez. A photo taken by an official of the city showed cyclists and equipment launched high into the air by the collision.

Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with murder Alejandro Alvarez, 37, of Monterrey. Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes in the 34 kilometers (21 miles) race Sunday along a road between Baghdad and Playa Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.

Campos said he is a U.S. citizen living in Brownsville. The USA Consulate could not immediately confirm that.

  1. This reminds me of a scene from one of the races at Bonifacio. The race had just started and we were crossing McKinley. Naturally, all the cars were made to stop. While waiting, one of the cars’ passengers was barfing her guts out while the lady driver just had her head on the steering wheel, almost passed out. They had apparently just come from one of the clubs at the Fort.

It’s a very real danger to runners, especially at that time since some people are just starting to go home after a night of gimmick – one of those drivers could easily doze off and plow into a pack of runners.

  3. Definitely disturbing, I could say the same for drivers who operates their mobile phones while in motion.

Absolutely no excuse for this so called accident.

  4. Accident could be avoided if the organizer’s have look every detail of the race that include primarily the safety along the way making sure nothing would interupt the race route.

  5. A running buddy said…

“…the effects (resulting accident) of alcohol”

    I said…

“nope! that’s the effect of zero judgment”

We (humans) all have the power to choose and a conscience to distinguish us from other forms of life – let’s use it.

What is it with this messages that people can’t understand…

    “DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE”
“DON’T USE MOBILE PHONES WHILE DRIVING”

When walking, running, biking, always scan (visual & aural) your path – be safe and see you guys on the road.

  6. We participated at the On Your Mark Draw the Line run for a cause event last April 13, 2008 as a family. After I went past the finish line with my 10 yr old son, I had to go back for my 3 other sons, age 8,6 and 3 accompanied by my hubby and 2 yayas… we kinda paired up each kid with an adult ….When I met up with my 2 boys and hubby a few hundred meters from finish line, a foreigner drove his black car straight into the race route… he drove straight infront of me, my husband and my 2 young boys, aged 3 and 6. He did not use the other lane… instead he really drove smack infront of us and we were on the road near the sidewalk !!!! Obviously, we were part of a run because we wore our race numbers and there were other runners infront and behind us…. my hubby had to shout at him some ** words that said in effect are you nuts? Didn’t you see us ? DOn’t you know there is a run going on? The road is sooooo wide you can use the other lane…..! (the race route in bonifacio was a 2-3 laner on both lanes !!!!) The foreigner had the nerve to be angry, got down from his car and shouted at us saying we could stay in the sidewalk !!!!?????? and so what pa daw…he said….Duuuh???? I had to get the 2 boys to the finish line and I didn’t want them to witness this silly alternation with a moron so I ran on and knocked on his car as we ran past his car hahahahha!!!! Bahala sya magalit kung baga… Siya ang wala sa lugar… literally and figuratively !!!! With 3 boys past the finish line with their dad, I went back for my 8 yr old who took to walking the last hundred meters …HEEEHAAAA!!!! We were so glad we all finsihed… even the yayas…!! HIPHIPHOOORAY!!!!

p.s. The youngest participant award (there was a little controversy here too when they awarded it to a 5 yr old, more on that at another time… it is a long story) was given to my son, the 3 yr old boy…. it was on the gma7 and qtv11 news…but we didn’t get to see it….

  8. Very unfortunate and something that never should have happened. The San Francisco Bay Area had an unfortunate accident earlier this year when a bicyclist was hit and killed by someone who was asleep at the wheel.

There have been close calls at a couple of races that I’ve been in this year. During a local 5K race in February, a couple of runners who were right behind me were nearly hit by a car making an illegal left turn. The area was blocked off by uniformed SF police, but the driver decided to take matters into his own hands.

We found out later that the driver was sited, had his license suspended because of a couple of previous drunk driving violations. His car was towed.

Keep up the great blog and happy running!
