LQ

I wish I told you how ecstatic I was over my first ever mountain bike ride last Sunday where my Garmin got his first taste of a biking event and registered it at 40 min for 9km.  Or, how my first Ashtanga yoga session last Wednesday completely blew me away and gave me a peek into the spiritual side of yoga which I am all too excited to explore.  Or, how foolish I felt for thinking that the pool would be open yesterday, a holiday, so instead of doing 50-meter laps, I found myself swimming with my children complete with lifesavers and noodle floats at my in-laws little pool.

No, I couldn’t bring myself to tell you about last week’s little details because it had nothing to do with running.  This is, after all, a running blog.

Truth be told, running and I haven’t been in good terms lately.  I have been furious with him since the day I learned about the shin splints.  I yelled at him from across the room (making sure my kids couldn’t hear) “After all that I’ve given to you—my heart and my soul—you give me runner’s knee and now this shin problem?!  What kind of a person are you?  Are you even human?!”  To which, he replies “Of course, I’m inhuman.  I’m a sport, dummy.”  Such disrespect!  I couldn’t take the cruelty so I packed my gym bags and took off.  (Okay, now you know why this post is entitled LQ.  Ang baduy ko, I know!  This is what happens when I don’t run.)  I haven’t seen him for a full two weeks—16 days, to be exact—since my last run. Despite therapy sessions, the lumps on my shins haven’t disappeared and continue to bother me at every step.

Since then, I have moved on.  I’ve been getting my cardio workouts from the elliptical trainer at the gym, swimming, and biking.  (Sadly though, none of these will ever compare to the workout that running gave me.  I am still gaining weight despite all these other cardio activities…grrr.)  I also have at least two sessions of either bikram yoga, ashtanga yoga (my new love), or yogilates each week.

When I recover from my shin splints (don’t ask me when because this is taking a lot longer than I expected), I’m sure I’ll be the one knocking on the door of running screaming “Let me in!  You’ve been a jerk but I love you anyway!”

While I’m injured, please be patient with me as this “running blog” will feature posts that will discuss more of my cross training activities than actual running.  If there’s one good thing that has come out of these injuries, it is that it’s pushing me to become a triathlete ahead of schedule!

  2. TBR – Sometimes all I need is a good warm up. I would run (in pain) for 10 minutes to work up a sweat and then stretch the offending parts of my body . The pain magically goes away when i start running after my warmup. It would go on everyday especially in my morning runs. Everything hurts, shin splints, Pantar Fascitiis or even my arch. Pero pa-kipot lang pala siya. I guess running was just testing my commitment.

Ikaw naman kasi, konting hirap lang LQ na agad!

  6. Marga, yeah bike time it is! Let’s sched it soon with Banggi!

MarkP, it was like that for me for 3 weeks! It would take me approx 2.5 km to warm up (computed yan ha!) then pain would subside and I would be free to run intervals, climb stairs, what have you. But, after Doc Fit bumigay na rin. I think I should have actually gone for complete rest instead of pushing it that far. As for running testing my commitment, oh he’s testing me alright. Haven’t ran a 10k since January. That’s way too long a test. Maawa naman siya sa akin noh?! :)

Backpacker, hehe just a secret sched of my athletic goals, i.e., target for marathon, triathlon, etc.

Bards, okay let me check! I have the may issue on marathon moms and loved that too! So inspiring. Thanks a lot for making me feel better.

Loonyrunner, aw nice quote. Thanks a lot! I should make that my wallpaper this week :)

  9. I can really feel the burning passion inside of you to run. Physical limitations at times deprive us of the things we love to do. But don’t let this take as a hindrance instead take it as a challenge. As to the saying that goes’ NO Pain No Gain’ My prayer’s for your complete recovery TBR. jst take one day at a time. I know you miss running that much but pls. take the Doc. Advice. I would be happy to know you back in the sports you love.

  12. Hi TBR, I pray for your quick recovery. Maybe its a blessing in a way were you could get accustomed to cross training so that you could improve your running. You would be surprise that Lance Armstrong’s marathon training is just to run 3x a week, and the rest are just cross training.

  16. Look…how many times have you been injured? and how much has your audience base grown for this blogsite? I dont think readers are just after your running journals. Don’t worry we like the whole package…the cross training experiences, the on-again off-again injuries (we get those too!) and last but not the least, the quirky writing style. Keep it up :-)

  19. Awww Bullrunner, running isn’t just about running. Running is everything that keeps you running, that includes; all the other cross training efforts that you do to keep yourself whole, the whining, the griping, the screaming, the victories, the defeats, doing absolutely nothing to give yourself a break, the extra helping of ice cream to make yourself feel better, the jealous look in your eye when you see other people running when you can’t, the new shoes that you buy to show yourself and the world you’ll be back soon, volunteering, helping other runners run those miles, I could go on and on and on.

Sorry you are laid up with another injury. Hope you are running again soon.

  20. Alfred, yes, one day at a time. Feels like years to me! Thanks for the quote.

    CatA, salamat!

Lugs, hahaha! Thanks for making me laugh. KTNL!

Taki, I’m learning to love the bike as Lance does!

Bobby, thanks! Hope to see you again in future races.

Tina, how have you been? Thanks a lot!

Gen, thanks! It was nice meeting you :)

Backpacker, good luck with your training! Stay safe and enjoy your long runs!

Rick, thanks for reminding me! I fell in love with running and it’s all I wanted to do every single day for the longest time. I guess that’s why I’m constantly injured. I’m learning to enjoy all the other activities but of course some of these I welcome with open arms…such as that extra scoop of ice cream. :)
