Running in Love

I know.  The title is so cheesy it makes you want to puke in your running shoes.  I almost did after I typed that in.  But, how else can I write about the positive impact running has had on my marriage without getting all sentimental and baduy?!

Loyal readers know that I had, for the longest time, been praying that the hubby join me in my running crusade.  I had never planned for an all-out offensive with him.  My strategy was to inundate him with interesting and exciting running stories, show off my well-toned arms and legs (which haven’t revealed themselves to me at the moment), and simply wait and see if he would take up the sport on his own.

Lo and behold, he did!  Slowly but surely, he worked his way up to 5ks, first on the treadmill then the road over the past few months.  He then joined his 1st 5k race, the Mizuno Infinity Run, and a couple more after that.  On days when he doesn’t play golf (his great love—second to me, of course), he runs instead.  A month ago, he purchased his Garmin 405 (which was technically my birthday gift to him) and last week, he got a mountain bike (which is way cooler than my hand-me-down).  The hubby is getting serious about this—and I can only sit back and admire the new running/ biking obsessed fiend I’ve created…kidding!

Who would’ve known that—aside from the many health benefits of running and biking—we would receive another bonus: a happier marriage.  It’s not like we weren’t happy to begin with.  But, running certainly has added more color and excitement to our married life and has given us yet another passion to share.

It’s fine if we don’t go on dinner dates often.  And he doesn’t give me flowers on Valentine’s Day.  And he doesn’t call me every waking minute to say he loves me (I wouldn’t want that anyway!)

I’m much happier with the fact that, last weekend, we ran an easy 5k together and had breakfast before the kids woke up.

I love it when I ask the hubby “What was your pace?” and he’ll answer with a number, not a blank stare. That we can pore over our own Garmins for minutes (it’s not just me anymore) and share the same amazement at these wonderfully crafted little watches (although my 305 is still better than his).  That we enter a sports store together equally ecstatic over our greatest active wear finds.

Our next date?  A bike trip to the gas station to put air in our tires—I’d choose that over dinner at Greenbelt, anytime!

  8. I recommendation, if I may:

If you are planning to bike alot, you might want to invest is a floor pump with a pressure gauge. That way you can increase or decrease the tire pressures on your bikes depending on where or what kind of riding you may want to do.

They’re relatively in expensive, I got mine for 1500 if I remember correctly.

  11. I envy you guys. I tried (I am still) to have my wife run along with me in the mornings. Unfortunately it seems running isn’t really her thing.

Anyway same with you I love my morning gimmicks more than afternoon stroll at the mall. But it would have been better if I’d be running with my wife.

  12. Thanks for sharing Jaymie. But tell Miguel flowers are still a must. Being mommy doesnt mean not being treated like a lady. : ) He can contact me direct so I can tell him where to find those holland roses that wont burn a hole in one’s pocket. Nakakaingit naman, may 405 na! Tell him to get a foot pod so if ever the gps signal is weak, it will autoswitch to the pod.

I was told that there will be a couple’s run on the last sunday of July at the Fort. Do you have any details on this? Partners should cross the finish line at the same time. I really like the concept of this race. Hopefully, this will be more than an excuse to get more quality time with wife and me. We used to box together at the gym. I rather run at ultra with her. She doesnt like to dragonboat… we’ll make it work.

  14. I was also glad that my gf was able to run with me in 10K races. Previously she only goes for 5K. At 10K, I make sure I run side by side with her. Forget finishing the race for your best personal time. There’s nothing like getting to the finish line together with your loved one.

  16. Idnod, tama na. Maiiyak na ako niyan :)

    Oknoy, I concede. You’re definitely a lot cheesier than I am. :)

Lonerunner, and i thought you were fartlek-averse haha.

Jeremy, mahal! But yes it would be more practical to get one. Thanks!

Jhamfrens, yeah we’ll be at La Salle. See ya :)

Lugs, you can do both together…not at the same time lang haha.

Taki, patience. You’ll never know. She might surprise you.

Mark, okay lang walang flowers. Basta may running accessories hehe. He’ll borrow my HRM and footpod. We actually haven’t tried it yet on the 405 but it should be compatible.

The couples’ race is Robinsons’ Fit & Fun Wellness Buddy Run. July 27. It’s on my list of races. First prize is a trip to Shang Mactan. This could be a good reason to have your wife join her first race.

Alfred, I don’t know if we’re joining yet. We’ll see.

Jinoe, aaaw that’s sweet. Congrats to you and your gf. My hubby and I never wait for each other during races. It’s a run at your own pace and meet in the car sort of thing hahaha.

Levy, hope to see you and your wife at races more often! :)

  17. What footpod did you get? Is that the small one compatible with the 50 and 405? The older one will work ata. Hopefully the automatic transfer to pod from gps will work work as well when gps signal is weak.

Jaymie as if manalo kami. hahahaha Baka sumali si Mr and Mrs Bueneventura ano or si Mr. and Mrs Pizarro! :O

My wife said yes, see you and Miguel there.

markfb said on Jul 08 08 at 3:55 PM Reply
  18. Mark, my footpod is the older one, the bulky one. Yeah i think it will work with 405.

Woooah, you got your wife to join! Good for you. I hope she enjoys it. HHWR ba?
    Wait…who’s Mr and Mrs Bueneventura?

  19. Congrats! I just started running a month ago with 100% support from my wife. It was really great. I ran my first 5K at Mizuno run, again with my wife cheering from the sideline. After the race my wife and I starts to run at UP academic oval every saturday afternoon together with our friend ( also a couple), and it was really great to run with your love one.
Congrats with your site. Hope to meet you in person in one of the race.

  20. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t love running… I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t care… guess nothing in this world given the opportunity to run alone. It would be great for sure if you had a running buddy or companion whatever you call it. Congrats and best wishes ! keep running…

  21. How could one (like you) be soooh lucky??? You know what? If ever I’ll decide to have a boyfriend again, he should be a runner like me (so we could join races for couples heh heh…)

Yes, Jaymie. I am now a Certifified 5k runner! And I owe this achievement to you, my mentor and inspiration. Pls visit my blogspot when you’ve got the time.
