One La Salle, One Wet & Wild Race

Despite the gloomy weather, over 5,000 runners showed up for the One La Salle run at The Fort yesterday. As I viewed the sea of green before me, I wondered if I had registered for a race or unwittingly signed up for one big La Salle family day.

Just as hubby and I found our way to the crowded assembly area, it started to drizzle and then pour. Runners huddled under tents while others allowed the rain to drench them from head to toe. We were part of the latter group; why shield ourselves from the rain when we were definitely going to get wet anyway?

Soon after the 16k and 3k runners started, we 5k runners were off. (Yes, all of us 5,000 runners started practically at the same time.) I bid my husband goodbye and went ahead not in an effort to break a PR but more to find some room to breathe. This was, after all, a training run for me; my first 5k after the shin splints.

For the first half, I ran at a comfortable 6:00 min/km pace, intentionally slowing down when I found myself reaching 5:00 to 5:30. No way was I going to reinjure myself for this race! It felt awesome to race under the rain, something I’ve never done. I didn’t feel as tired and I felt like I could go on to the finish line without ever taking a sip from my amphipod. Boy was I wrong.

As I closed in on the 3km mark, I suddenly felt depleted. I knew that there were two things to blame for this pathetic scenario: 1) staying up late the night before to read books with my daughter (that’s the life of a running mommy!), and 2) lack of training (my longest run was a 5k during my past 1.5 month imprisonment in shin splint hell.)

I swallowed my pride. I began to walk (argh…a mortal sin in the TBR world because no one has ever caught me walking in a race—much less a 5k!) and, in an attempt to appear strong and cool, I made it look as if I was just taking a water break.

It turned out to be a futile strategy since a runner suddenly appeared beside me, almost like an angel from the sky. How I wished that he looked like Gabriel with long blonde hair, unblemished skin, with his chiseled chest shining through his white robes staring at me with his blue eyes saying “Be strong. I shall run with you.” But, this man was old, dark, chubby, and short and he said to me in the gentlest manner “Maganda ang pace mo. Ituloy mo lang yan. Sasabayan kita.” And, with those words, despite his non-angelic features he became a blessing to me. We ran together.

God, all that drama. You’d think I was running marathon. Or, at least, you’d think that the man ran with me the next two kilometers to finish the 5k race. Soon after he uttered those words, we made a left on the road along with the rest of the 5k pack to discover that we were at the finish line. Whaaat?!  According to my Garmin, the 5km race had ended at 3.3km. Was the route inaccurately measured?  Did all of us make a wrong turn?  Did they miss a sign along the route?  Did they lack marshalls (I didn’t see any!) to point us in the right direction?  I don’t know.  All I knew was that it was the shortest 5k of my life.

We were in for an even bigger surprise: a long line for us to pass through the finish line. I bet we were lined up even longer than the time it took us to run the race. I apologize for being sarcastic. But, my sarcasm was a lot lighter than the complaints from the crowd. One veteran runner repeated himself like a broken record as he waited in line “Terrible. Another badly organized race. Terrible. Terrible.”

IMG_0128

- Runners waited in line to claim race giveaways being distributed from a truck. The scene reminded me of a NFA rice allocation. -

After my 5k-run-that-was-actually-a-3k, my hubby and I met up with my nephew (who I, unfortunately, didn’t see before or during the entire run) and my three bodyguards, uhm, actually they are my three kuyas, who just came to watch.  We chatted for a while, took a few photos, then called it a family day.

Thank God for the drops of water from heaven.  Running in the rain was perhaps one of the few, if not the only, positive experience I gained from this race.

  1. TBR – Yes, I have recovered from my injuries and i’ve started concentrating on my hamstrings during stretching session. They didn’t have enough marshals on the road. But there were lots of water and it even rained. Hopefully the next few races will be better organized. Welcome back!!!

  2. yes, think a lot of 5k runners went into the 3k route. My gf said it was because of the security guard who informed the 5k runners that they were supposed to turn left, when in fact they had to keep on going straight with the 16k runners… Not enough marshalls and security guards were teaching the wrong ways!!! Hers was also 3.3km along with another friend of ours who also asked the same guard later on! Bad luck ! At least got a magazine worth P125 out of it so offsetted entry fee. haha

  5. jaymie… one of my buds took the 5k, and like you, he said that the route was kinda short. apparently they were directed by some towards the 3k route instead of going straight 5th ave. quite sad actually considering that even 2 race marshalls would have been enough properly direct the runners at that junction. (which i think was too much to ask considering at just 100m from the starting line, half of us 16k runners got diverted to the right instead of turning left)

  6. it surely was a sea of green and white…good for you tbr, at least you got to run that day…i missed my alma mater’s run just because i couldn’t shake off my headache when my alarm rang (probably my body’s way of saying too much biking at Timberland/Maarat)…by the way, i noticed the trail runners increasing by the week there in timberland…male and female runners, of varied ages…perhaps training for the TNF end of the month…i’d surely want to run the 2nd part of the 100km of TNF run but no one to run it with (not an excuse)haha…a little insert on the San Diego Marathon…it was great, perhaps the most fun…more than 20,000 runners…their ad saying that the crowds will be sipping their mimosas was not an exaggeration, champagne and beer flowed too for the spectators outside their homes/buildings during that morning…bottled H20 and accelerade every few miles…vaseline on sticks given by volunteers at the various medic aid stations…porta potties all over…top it with 30 plus local bands and 20 plus fun cheering squads! i’ll just email you the pics…by the way TBR, back to the One La Salle Run…good it didnt irritate the Bull (and THE other ateneans or atenites or atenians?blue eaglets na lang) too much to turn it into ONE BIG FIGHT!!! hahaha go runners!!!

  7. i ran my best 5K at 16++ minutes but how come i did not win? it was fast enough to qualify in the Olympics!!!

It was because i ended up running 3K. I knew i must have ran less than 5K the moment i checked my watch when i arrived at the queue in the finish line.

There were no marshals at critical turns of the route thats why many runners got lost.

Also, the baggage booth was a mess. They ran out of tags so they have to write on the bags (using permanent markers). Not wanting to have our bag marked, my wife just carried the bag while doing her 3K.

But on the brighter side, there were lots of drinks. The free donuts were also nice.

And if the race results get published and it show my time as 16+++ minutes, I will put it in a nice frame and hang it on the wall

  8. Hi Jaymie! I was a couple of people behind you at the Finish line queue. I wanted to say hi. But, you were engaged with a couple of guys in the details of the 3.3K race. I was quite dissappointed too. It was exhilirating to run in the rain. Your blog is one of the reasons I am training for running regularly. I’ll say hello next time I see you. I had to run back to the car. My 17month old boy and husband was waiting for me… – from a fellow running mom.

  9. Mark, glad you’re back. Tiffin, was nice chatting with you about orthotics..and bunions hahaha.

Dennis, funny that runners had to stop and ask. To think it was just a 5k. :)

Marga, I reviewed my son yesterday for a long test on angels. Only when you quoted it above did I realize that it made such an imprint on my brain haha.

Alfred, glad you enjoyed running in the rain too.

Charles, hope you didn’t go too far off!

Mond, I’m sure the TNF is creating a lot of new trail runners. If I wasn’t injured, I’d probably be one of those you saw running the trails there. Yes, send me picks of San Diego. Congrats! Inggit ako.

Diospyross, there was probably over 50 people in the 5k who would qualify in the olympics with their times! hahaha

  11. I quite enjoyed the race. I did the 16km and it was exactly 16 km according to my garmin. The rain was a warmy welcome. The water was enough. I was one of the lucky people that got pointed in the right way even though I had to ask one where to turn. The finish was not that enjoyable though. The queues were crazy and I gave up looking for things so I did not even get the magazine :) I could not even get some drink as I did not know where to go. The atmosphere was great though and I enjoyed the La Salle song at the end. Maybe Rio can tell them how to organise the finish like the UP runs. Thank you Rio, cant wait for your next run.

  12. So you were one of the misdirected runner. Sayang. I run the 16K and my cue was to follow the path less travelled. But a lot of us had a lot of complains. It’s a good thing it rained and put the cool on the runners. Glad to see you run again.

  14. TBR_ i also ran the 5k and was surprised when i saw 5k runners ahead of me crossed 5th Ave and went all the way to the finish line. What i did was i turned right going to mckinley and south gate which i remembered from the route map. I agree that there should be marshals directing runners at critical turns. I am sure the organizers measured the route correctly because my wife (running her first race) and i measured the 3k route for her to be familiar with it. It was a great run under the rain.

  16. Hi TBR — it was a sad ending to what could have been a great event — and to be honored by a number of Atenean runners at that — too bad we had to eat humble pie because of the screw up of the race event organizer we got. In behalf of the De La Salle Alumni Association, please accept our humble apologies — yes there were mistakes, miscues and missing marshals. It took away the joy of seeing 5,800 runners and friends. As someone above said, thank for the rains — it sort of cooled down the anger. It doesn’t take away the black mark — we will try and erase it with a better performance in the future and you guys are right — I should talk with Coach Rio to help organize a better finish.

  17. jaymie, congrats for finishing the race without any injury. even if there were problems and lapses, what was important was you were able to run and experience the joy of running in the rain. good luck in your future races. i hope i will be able to catch up with the elite ultramarathoners at the starting line of badwater ultramarathon tomorrow morning.

  18. I just came from the site of “theloonyrunner”. How I wished these words of the loony runner were written by me. Here goes:

“It happened… I finally met THE icon of Philippine running, I finally met the Bull Runner!”

Then he talked about the weirdest run of his life–running under the rain with his bag, etc. At the 3rd paragraph before the end of his article he wrote:

“After the run, I also got to meet TBR (the highlight of this race event)”

I hope and pray that someday, I will also get my chance to see my idol in the flesh!

  19. all in all i enjoyed this run, but I am continually stunned by the terrible traffic control during races at the Fort. This is about the 10th race of 10k or more I’ve done there, and at the last two (Mizuno Rush to Infinity and LaSalle) and several others I’ve literally had to stop traffic myself to cross the street while running. It;s bad enough when you’re running *next to* jeepneys, and I guess you can’t prevent that. But when you’re crossing an intersection and traffic is crossing? A bit much.

Also want to mention that my Nike+ band showed the 16k route at 14.44. Anyone else have a similar experience?

On the plus side: tons of water, good festival, atmosphere, and freebies after, and I got to meet Coach Rio!

  21. Hi Alfred,

You said: “Along the way there is a smile on my face running my very first race in the rain know why? first to see those exhausted 3k, 5k runner’s get lost and go with the 16k hehehehe sweet memories on their faces hehehehhe.”

Why didn’t you point those runners to the right direction? Your remark on those runners who tried their very best to run no matter what distance they’re on is just so arrogant and uncalled for. You are indeed an annoying member of the running community!

And please please PLEASE learn to use the apostrophe properly. http://www.englishforums.com/English/ProperApostrophesDontsAboutDonts/lzkx/post.htm

GOD. And while you’re at it learn English! OR Speak in Tagalog if you must!!!

  24. I think my garmin is quite accurate as the Mizuno race it logged 15.4 km and the most people agreed. I was quite tired during the race and I kept a close eye on my watch regularly and it seems to have logged the correct distances according to my pace and also it is GPS accurate. Anyway… i just know it was quite far and I cant wait for the results…

  27. Philip, great that you had a pleasant experience. I think if I ran the 16k even if i got lost I would’ve enjoyed. It was just that the 3k was bitin.

Jinoe, thanks. Taking the path less travelled sounds like a risky move but i’m glad it worked for you :)

Taki, hahaha! Sige, next time I’ll have more paparazzi shots for you.

BroJ, it’s good you studied the route map. I didn’t receive a copy in my race pack.

Lugs, yup! I should get my big kuyas into running too.

Johnny, I’m sure you’ll make improvements in the next race. Runners just want to have a good run. Sometimes there are mistakes and yes we do complain, but we easily forgive and forget and run again. Looking forward to wearing blue again next year…haha just kidding.

Baldrunner, yes I’m just glad I ended without pain. Good luck at badwater!

Nora, aw I’m sure we’ll meet one of these days! :)

Dan, great to hear you enjoyed your race.

    Idnod, funny! hahaha

Michelle, it’s a pity that some sort of crab mentality exists in our running world, or in the entire world for that matter. I completely understand your sentiments and I appreciate your candor. But please please let’s not make my blog a venue for such hateful comments.

Alfred, I completely missed reading that portion that Michelle was referring to. Quite honestly, I was disappointed to learn that you found humor in runners losing their way or growing weary. Aren’t we all supposed to help each other?

Philip, your garmin is probably right! Garmins are never wrong! Pang-commercial ba? :)

Runningfatboy, oh that’s way too short.

My fellow BORDJS runners were not sighted on the OROFOLS at The Fort, only one BORDJS (Chris) was seen but he didn’t noticed me as he was about to exit the line of the free doughnuts and I’m on the line going for the free doughnut, he did not heard my voice as I was calling his name. I was the one who registered for the BORDJS runners @ Robinsons Pioneer on 7-10-08 but unfortunately only the 3K was available so instead of registering 10 members of the club I cut it into 8 because some of the members did not want to run for the 3K category. It was my first time to run for 3K and I it was fun running in the rain.

  45. Hi there,

I joined the 16K but completed only 13K. Why? Because I ran the first loop with a distance of approx 8k but ran the second loop with 5K route. In the first loop, I was able to follow the right direction. But during my second loop, at corner of 11th ave, with the 16K arrow pointing to the right, I turned to the left instead together with the other runners because there was a guy standing there directing us to turn left. So we all did a left turn. After the run, as I was wondering why I finished early, I checked the route map in the website and confirmed that I missed the portion with the right turn from 11th ave and turn around point at 38th ave. So, I ran half of 16k route and full 5k route and that’s what made up my 13K.

Riza, too bad that even the guy giving directions was misguided! 13k is still a feat so congratulations!

  50. BRunner, moving forward :) , where did you get the Garmins? 405s, right?

I’m not looking to retire my AXN500 HRM but looking for a light road HRM (hoping if I cut a few grams I could cut a few milliseconds as well – :D ). Is the HRM ok? (accurate, comfy strap, good software)

I did read somewhere it’s good for 8 hours running on with the GPS, is it a hassle to re-charge?

  53. The confusion brought about by the absence of marshals at critical intersections is disappointing. I believe the routes were published in the Adevents OROFOLS website early. As participants, it is our duty to know the route. However, it is more important for the organizers to provide sufficient marshals or signs to guide the runners.

I turned right to the road going to the South Gate. Then a runner whom I passed told me that I took the 16 k route. I just politely told him that it doesn’t matter. I just wished that I went for the 16 k. The 5k appeared to be bitin.

Anyway it was fun running in the rain but not amidst so much confusion!
