Wake Up, Sleepyhead

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

I set my alarm for 5:00 this morning with the intention of running for 45 minutes on my treadmill for the scheduled V-Run today.  I was to run a bit earlier than my virtual friends hoping to run my last kilometer with them as they started at 6:00 a.m. Manila time. (Mommy duties beckon for me at the strike of 6.)

So, the alarm did ring. And, I swear I heard E-rod drop his martini on the white sands of the Bahamas just to free his hands and holler out to me “Get up, sleepy bull-headed runneeeeer!”

Unfortunately, it didn’t work.  I got up only to turn off the alarm and get back to bed to get my much-needed shut eye.

I should be excused.  I was a bit tired from last night.  I ran a total of 8km at Bonifacio High Street, my farthest since recovering from my shin splints. Woohooo! First, I ran 4.5k with Happy Feet peeps Ben, Aljo, and Tin (welcome to HF, Tin!) then another 3.5k with Ben and Marga. I also bumped into ultimate race organizer Coach Rio, Unang Hirit’s Drew A., Active Achiever Vince, and Eds Ochoa of OneSport. Phew, a full night of running and chatting with running friends, plus an hour of traffic on the way home, made The Bull Runner sleep like a log.

But, I know…there is no excuse.  Sorry to disappoint you fellow V-runners.  I promise to make it up to you in our next V-Run. I’ll provide everyone’s virtual water or preferred sports drink, hand out virtual bananas and peanut butter after the run, and even give virtual foot massages for your tired feet. Until the next V-Run!

Grabe I felt like such a lozar last night. Ambagal na, ansakit pa ng shins! Laki pala ng setback once you stop running, kahit 2 weeks lang!

Shucks I wasn’t able to make it either. I had track tonight. I took off all of last week after my last big race. Ran yesterday and was saving my energy for the track today. I don’t think I could have handled two runs today. Nope not today.

Hi tbr, apology accepted hehe…Btw, was able to do the VR with some friends (2 HF newbies). It was actually a scheduled run so no worries ;-) We met at the village oval park at 5:30am and after a few stretches/warm-up, westarted the run at around 5:45am. as the sun was about to rise, we headed out the village towards Ortigas Avenue ext. on the way to Valley Golf & Country Club.

We agreed to run at a slow pace of about 7-7:30/km (as if i could run faster hehehe…). This stretch is relatively flat until the you reach the 2nd km approaching the second gate (.5km uphill). This is where it becomes fun, with less traffic, lots of trees and fresh air, it makes running really enjoyable. This stretch was again relatively flat with a slight downhill and you could already see lots of golfers doing their thing (golfing that is hehehe…). At km 4, this is where the challenge comes. It’s the start of 4 hill stretches capped by a steep/gruelling incline at the Sumulong hi-way gate which is our turning point (km7). At this stage, we were really trying to catch our breath, and a sip of gatorade would trully be refreshing. Thanks to our hydration packs, if not for them, we would be begging the security guards to give us a few sips of water.

This gate is infront of Grilla and The Old Spaghetti House and here, you could see lots of cyclists pedalling their guts out on their way to Antipolo church. After a few minutes of stretching, we started to head back. During this downhill part, we just walked ’til we reach the part where the it is more manageable to run. And after 3 hills (again! aaaaargghh…), we are finally on our way out Ortigas Ave. Ended the run at our village’s oval park where we met fellow h@ppy feet runner Del who wasn’t able to join us for this run. We ended up doing 14k (approx. 1:40mins).

For the next VR, we are planning to do the Hinulugang Taktak route. Will try to take some pix of the route (with us as the foreground, & wearing the HF uniforms of course hehehe…)and post it in our site just like what Doknoy did a few weeks back. Hope you’ll be able to make it next time, just let us know if you need a wake up call…;-)
