All Roads Lead to Singapore

SingaporeMarathon

On Dec. 7, 2008, I shall be one of 50,000 participants who will be running in the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon. As early as July, I registered for the race and, since then, all my running thoughts and actions have revolved around this singular goal. I don’t intend to just finish this race, but I hope to cross the finish line strong, injury-free, and of course, with a respectable time.

Nope, I didn’t register for the marathon; I signed up for the half marathon. If there’s one thing I learned from my injuries, it’s this: Even if the mind is willing, the shins, quads, and knees may be dying! Timing is key. And, I know that it’s definitely not time for me to accomplish my marathon dream just yet—maybe next year in New York? I wish.

So, I’m gearing up for my half—conservatively increasing my mileage until December, strengthening my legs, cross training (swimming is my favorite this week), and last but not the least, saving every single cent—to make sure that I’ll be strong and healthy (with enough moolah in my pocket to buy some running stuff) when my feet touch Singapore soil.  I can hardly wait.

  5. ARGH. I should’ve registered earlier. It would be an absolute waste to stay for an entire MONTH at Singapore and not do the Singapore Marathon! Groan. Anyway, you know where to go if you need a place to crash! :-)

    *sana may onsite*

  8. Good luck! Buti ka pa, kahit 21km sure it would be quite an experience. 50,000 have already registered!

I’ve been going to their site as early as April. I only checked last Sept 21 and it closed Sept 19. Hay, was supposed to be my first marathon. For a while the thought of running for a charity crossed my mind. But for 700 Sing… medyo mahal.

  9. Jaymie, surely hubby will give you pocket money as part of your Best Blog win. : ) If so, make sure to head on to Queensway. Thats where the cheapest but latest shoes can be found. They had apparel too but I didnt look. Its along Alexander Road, in front of the biggest Ikea in Singapore. Thats where I got my Asics ds 7 when it wasnt released in the US yet. Mura pa than online huh! There’s no gst there plus the secret is to always pretend that you’ve gone around already. “What’s your best price?” Bait naman mga indian doon.

The price at Queensway mall is very far from the SRP found at regular stores. Parang Cartimar yun.

  11. Mark FB is right, Queensway is the best place to buy shoes and always ask for the lowest price.

This is a big race and the biggest challenge is the pre-race logistics. Getting to the venue and finding a toilet will be a challenge. The last time I ran they had some toilets after 2 or 3 kilometers which was a godsend.

Tell hubby to position himself at the Benjamin Shears bridge at the side of the merlion. You will pass that point 3 times during the race. Taking pictures at the finish line will be a bit difficult.

Also decide where you will meet after the race. There will be lots of people and you might have a hard time finding each other. just imagine 50,000 runners + friends and family.

Right after the race, line up for your goodies and freebies and medals right away so you avoid the queue. Check if the half marathoners have a different line.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy race.

    Regards Mark & Tiffin

  12. I am very excited for you, Jaymie. Imagine, 50,000 runners! Knowing StanChart and the Singaporeans, I am confident the race will be very organised. SCB gives nice shirts and giveaways too. Your post rekindles my hope of joining any of the 4 legs of what SCB bills as the greatest race on earth (Nairobi-Mumbai-Singapore-HK). I worked 3 years in SCB and failed to muster the courage to join the global risk team. I thought my times were pathetic compared to my foreign colleagues’, but they were certainly better than those who did join but did not start nor finish. Hopefully in 2009 the Singapore leg will be my first full marathon. Good luck to you. Run for all of us. Reward yourself with chicken rice and chili crab after :-)

  13. Hi TBR good luck on the race, I’m also doing my first marathon there and believe me the suspense is killing me, you know, can I really make it to the finish line? I’m getting a lot of good tips here, where the best position is, the queensway, etc. Regards
