Racebelts, anyone?

The race belt—although seemingly insignificant compared to one’s training, shoes, bike, attire, and other tri equipment—is an important accessory for a triathlete. You don’t want to be fiddling around with pins at the transition area nor do you want to feel tiny needle pokes on your tummy while you’re racing (there’s enough suffering out there on the road!) I realized the importance of this little belt, a little bit too late, as I prepared for my first tri last month.

A week or two before the race, I went all over the Metro looking for a race belt; none at ROX, Bike King, or bike shops at Alabang. I heard these were readily available at Cartimar, but I had no intentions of spending money on gas that would have probably cost more than the race belt.  Thankfully, a runner/triathlete friend, Mark P., said he would get his hands on a few race belts from a friend.  As back up (yes, I leave no stone unturned), I also borrowed the belt of another triathlete friend, Jamike, who offered to lend his a day before the race.

To cut a long story short, I ended up with 4 race belts during the Animo Tri. Three from Mark, two of which I handed out to Marga and Philip, and one for me. Then, I used Jamike’s race belt.  Hooray for race belts! Goodbye to pins!

Fast forward to Adidas KOTR—with race belts being the farthest thing on my mind—I meet Rikkiboi and Toto, two guys who approach me proudly showing off their new products: racebelts!  They share their desire to offer belts to runners (not just triathletes) to avoid punching tiny holes in expensive singlets and avoid losing time attaching those 4 pins on your shirts. Soon, they’ll be offering new products such as “the race lace.”

The race belts will be available at future fun runs/ races so keep your eye out for them.  For any inquiries, contact Rikkiboi or Toto at one77evo@yahoo.com.

  1. what are racebelts for? how are they used?

Hi Jovin, you wear the belt around your waist much like a regular belt but this is where you attach your race bib instead of using four safety pins and attaching it to your singlet. Race belts vary in size, color, thickness, and how you attach the bib. Most triathletes, if not all, use race belts since it’s more convenient to do so rushing in transition from swim to bike when you’re supposed to wear the bib. It’s also not suggested that you pin stuff onto your trisuit anyway.

In running, it’s not necessary for you to wear a race belt since you can pin it onto your shirt/singlet. However, you’re always free to do so if you find it more convenient :)

  2. Wow, the other one alos broke. The clip is not to strong so I bought another one from bike king but it had one stress clip missing and I cant find anyone in Manila that can attach one for me, so this is great news, I already send them an email. Thanks for the info…

    You’re welcome :)

  3. Oh, I’m interested, TBR. Thanks for this. What I usually do is (a la MacGyver), is use a thick shoelace and run it through the top holes of the bib and tie it around my waist/hip. And yeah, pinning the bib is not great for the expensive dri-fit tops.

Do keep us posted on this.

Btw, since we haven’t met (especially at the KOTR), I’m the runner who came in 180th in the KOTR 21k – and 5th in the Animo Mini-Sprint. Hope we can meet in the future.

Congrats on your 10k run, btw.

    See you in Singapore!

Wow very resourceful :) Thanks and hope to meet you too.

  7. Race belts are cool, not just because they prevent you from sticking pins in your dear gear but also in you (in case of some freak accident) — like the one I experienced crossing the KOR line last Saturday – the staff pulling the tabs off the bibs just roughly tugged on the tab which opened one of the pins.

I hope you could post a pic so we could take a peek at the item.
    :D

Hey idnod, wow sobra naman rough yung staff na yun. I’ll take a closer shot of my race belt and post it here

  15. Rikkiboi & Toto – Race belts have evolved. The one I got from New balance had fasteners so you don’t even need to have safety pins. other race belts have pockets to store fuel, money or car keys.

    Good Luck on your business.

    Regards Mark

Mark, their race belts have buttons. You dont need pins. Yeah, they should have small pouches.

  16. Race belts are great been using it for almost 2 years now. But what i do is i put duck tape on the 2 upper holes on the race bib no. this will avoid the race belts hook from tearing the holes up

Thanks Patrick! We always get the best tips from you.

  17. If I use the race belt does it mean I can’t wear my hydration belt?

Oh man, I didn’t think of this. For me, it would be a hassle to wear both.

  20. DATC, i wear the race belt and fuel belt…race belt above my shirt obviously for visibility of the bib number esp when running photographer Ben’s team gets ready to aim at you…fuel belt goes really low, somewhere a good few inches above the pelvic area (so you can still power your run)…seems like a lot of belts but no hassle really…more convenience than anything…
