Double Training Day

As corny as it sounds, the greatest gift this blog has given me was the opportunity to meet people who share the same passion for running as I do. Yesterday, I realized that I started and ended the day with some of these people with whom I have had the good fortune of training (and talking and laughing) with:

{ SWIMMING WITH ME-ANNE, 7 a.m. }

When Mary Anne first commented on this blog, I couldn’t help but reply immediately.  We had too many things in common: both in love with running, in our 30′s, and with 2 kids.  When I met her, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that we also had the same NB 1222′s (that we’ve now gotten rid of) and we live in the same area.  Then, last month, we bumped into each other and discovered that we both signed up for our first tri at Animo; she instantly became one of my text mates for pre-tri anxieties over wardrobe and gear.

Yesterday, Me-Anne and I met up for a quick swim at 7 a.m.  I usually swim on my own and, most of the time, that’s the way I like it; there’s something about swimming alone in an olympic-sized pool early in the morning that allows me to reconnect with myself, feel completely at peace, almost like I’m a step closer to heaven even if half my body is submerged under water.  Yesterday, however, I was glad to have some company.

Me-Anne and I are both newbies at swimming but we’re trying our best to improve with hopes of doing better at our next tri (don’t ask me when that’ll be). We spent perhaps half of the time talking in between laps, but I’d like to think we got some exercise in that morning. I swam just 500m but Me-Anne probably did more. Let’s meet up again soon, Me-Anne!

{ RUNNING WITH PINOY ULTRA PEEPS + DON, 7 p.m. }

I met up with Marga, Hector, Neville, and Don (Jeremy, where were you?!) at ROX, Bonifacio High Street for a quick run around BHS. It took us forever to start (too much conversation going on) but, hey, once we started, we ran a good steady pace all the way (not surprising when you run with these ultra runners).

Sometime during the run, Neville talks about the first time I emailed him requesting for an interview for this blog. Wow, it seemed like ages ago! Then, I remembered how I met Marga via email when we promised to meet each other at Milo last year. And, when I first saw Hector as he talked about the Nike Lunar during the test run months ago. As for Don, I finally got to meet him recently after hearing so much about him from Marga.

So, there I was running around BHS realizing how much shorter these loops seemed when you talk with friends rather than run solo with an ipod.  Neville even spiced things up a bit when, for one loop, we did what he called “Indian Running” wherein we all ran in a line with the leader setting the pace.  The last man in the line then heads towards the front to take leader position and the cycle goes on until everyone collapses (I’m kidding about the last part.)  We ended our run alive and breathing at 7.5km for around 50mins. drinking to Neville’s stash of electrolyte drinks in the BHS parking lot.

Double training day was doubly fun with friends. I would do this again in a heartbeat.  If only I had all the time in the world!

  6. I recognized you from that run. You were running with a fat gay guy na medyo kalbo on the street and it was arrogant for him to signal the cars to part and make way for you. Why can’t you run on the sidewalk? why did he do that – is he elite nuff? Of course, you are moderating this, but I just hope you will address this. Because I know you are nice.

    Hey Caloi, aaaaw I don’t think it was arrogant of him to signal the cars that way. I thought it was courteous of him to pave the way for his fellow runners since he was the leader of the pack. Being elite or non elite has nothing to do with it. And, he’s not gay by the way.

    Why didn’t we run in the sidewalk? Personally, I prefer running on the streets. In fact, I go all the way to BHS so I can run on asphalted streets. At times I want to inform other runners on the sidewalk that the concrete is bad for their joints…but the BHS guards might kill me.

    From a runner to a fellow runner, I don’t think you should make a big deal out of this. I’ve noticed that when I’m driving I am more considerate of runners and bikers on the road, allowing them to go ahead or stopping for them. It would be nice if all of us runners could do the same for others in the running community.

    Lastly, I’m only nice to people who are nice to my family, friends, and myself. That “arrogant guy” is my friend.

  7. Sayang… I was actually out sa office by around 6 and had all my running outfit with me. I went to BHS and I was trying to look for any familiar faces whom I can run with. Well, I didn’t find anyone at that time, and I just decided to call the day a rest. Sayang if I stayed longer baka nakita ko kayo.

    P.S. new logo ah. :) It looks nice and simple.

    Taki, sayang! If you stayed longer and passed by ROX, you would’ve seen us lounging around in what felt like our own sala inside ROX. Next time sama ka :)

    Apir! As we’ve said, self-restraint online. On the roads, iba na usapan :)

  10. to caloi: pare, laki ng problema mo ah. were you that inconvenienced by hec’s motioning for vehicles to stop? e lahat kami ginagawa yun, plus a few other runners am sure. di mo naman kelangang tawaging fat gay guy si hector, hindi mo siya kilala.

    and just so you know, it’s a non-issue jaymie shouldn’t even bother addressing. matanong nga kita, tumatakbo ka ba talaga? kasi kung tumatakbo ka, you’d know that people who run will motion vehicles to halt or stall their pagtawid sa intersection or corner or whatever.

    and i’m sorry, non sequitur lang talaga yung line of thinking na hector isn’t elite enough to do what he did. mag isip ka nga muna bago ka mag-comment nang kung anu-ano diyan.

    Ingat lang tayo baka sagasaan tayo ni thin straight guy Caloi. Mwehehehe.

  12. hello!!! you changed your logo…nice din but i’m kinda attached to the original one :-) but i especially like this blog entry :-) … enjoyed our swim as well dami ga natin chica breaks in bewteen would have loved to chat some more pa nga but i was thinking you wouldn’t get any mileage done with me interrupting your supposed to be 10 second break. :-) going back to work on monday …hay back to reality! wanted to squeeze in one more swim last week but didn’t find time to do it lang. di bale someday when i stop working (hope hubby reads this) i can have more of my dream day schedule i told you about. I think I’m running 10 in the NB race…have you decided on running half? game na prep for your singapore half! By the way told you i didn’t swim for about a month right? well, paid for it dearly my poor non-athletic body was aching all over and my right arm was the worst the next day after our swim…hehehe… see ya around!!!

    Me-Anne, that’s the price we have to pay for being “late bloomers!” I hope your arm is better by now. Yup, I’ll be running half. I hope nothing aches after too! :) Let’s swim again soon. Hopefully when hubby allows you to retire we can swim daily hahaha

  13. Read your article above – we do “Indian Running” in some of our speed sessions at my running club – we call them “bicycle gears”, I think because in cycle races the Pelathon(pack) do this to catch a leader who has got too far ahead to share the workload – I’m just off to do a 1/2M race (Worksop 1/2M Notinghamshire England) in the cold, wind and Rain (i’m jealous of your training conditions at this time of year) – I’m in Phil in January hopefully to do Quezon City 1/2M

    Best Regards and good luck in your pre-tri training

    Hi robbo, bicycle gears…cool :) I asked Neville why they call it indian running and he didn’t know either.

    Cold, wind, and rain sounds a bit exciting too. I’m willing to train one day in that just to shield me from the intense heat over here…but one day only! :) Hope to meet you at QC next year.

  14. To Caloi:

    You were seriously expecting Jaymie to “address” the issue of her friend stopping traffic???

    I don’t get your logic – what’s being an elite runner got to do with having the right to wave cars to stop? If you’re slow dapat masagasaan ka?

    You obviously don’t run so you don’t understand why runners run on the road and not on the sidewalk. I suggest you try running at BHS or better yet join some races so you can experience what it’s like and understand for yourself.
