4th OctobeRun Festival

{ TRAINING RACE }

I had only two words in mind as I dressed for the race yesterday morning: TRAINING RUN. My “race mode” button was shut off that morning so that’s probably why I took my sweet time—even had time to touch up the pedicure on my dead toenail (yes, it’s dead again)—before I left for Bonifacio High Street.

It came as no surprise then that I arrived just 5 mins. before the race start. When I arrived at the assembly area, I was in no mood to socialize (except to wish Cougcat good luck in his 3k and congratulate Carolyn on her Nike Women’s Half in SF) while I let out quite a number of yawns as I waited for the babbling host to just let the race begin. Fortunately, just after the Philippine National Anthem was played, JunC and Jay—my training partners that day—appeared and we had a few minutes to chat before the race started at 6:15 a.m. (thanks to the super talkative host).

Our plan was to run at 6:15 pace during the 10k race plus an additional 10k thereafter at 6:15 to 6:30 pace to complete 20k for me while Jun and Jay, who ran before the race, would reach a total of 25k.

This was the first time I ran with a training group during a race and I’m sure glad I did. Our steady and relaxed pace allowed us to chat during the entire length of the race, yell out words of encouragement to runner friends who made their way back ahead of us (and maybe whisper “I’ll get you next time!” to a few others), and even stop at some water stations to splash some cold water on our faces. We even “recruited” Dra. Doray to run with us for a few kilometers before we parted ways.

The Fort Striders Club did a great job organizing this race. We went through the challenging Lawton-Bayani Road route without a hitch. There was an abundant supply of mineral water (not balde system as in Adidas KOTR) and marshalls were so helpful that they even poured this on our heads or faces as if they were personal coaches. I wished they had started at exactly 6 a.m. but hey that’s a minor inconvenience.  Congratulations to Fort Striders, especially my friends Taki and Glenn, for a successful race.

We crossed the finish line—agreeing to meet in 5 minutes for the next 10k—at 58:21 mins with an average pace of 5:54.  Total distance was 9.9k on my Garmin, pretty accurate measurement for organizers. We ran a little bit faster than our planned pace, but it left me feeling strong enough for the next half of our goal.

{ NEXT 10KM }

After a 5 minute break where I changed my top, munched on half a ClifBar, and found myself sharing an almost empty parking lot with Fernando Zobel, I met Jay and Jun at ROX to run our next 10k.

We were an indecisive bunch not knowing which route to take that would give us the most shade from the 7:30 a.m. sun. We decided to run loops around Market!Market! where more than half of the route was shaded and, as I requested, the roads were flat.

The next 10k was light and easy and filled with good conversation. Sometime during the run, I had what I’d like to call a “running epiphany” where I realized that I enjoyed this slow and steady type of run vs. a race; I would give up a 10k podium finish (and even cash prize!) anytime for an easy half marathon distance with friends. I could’ve screamed “I love to ruuuuuun!” right there and then, but I thought of Jun and Jay who didn’t have brown bags with them to shield them from embarassment.

We ended our 10k with an average pace of 6:55km to complete a full 20km for me. This was the farthest distance I had ever run.  Wooohooo!  And, as I ended without any hint of injury, I took it as a sign that I was ready for NB 25k.  Double wooohooo with cartwheels (if only I could do them)!  See you at Clark!

  3. Am really happy you are coming along so well with your training! It was great running with you and Jun and remember it’s okay to scream “I love to ruuun!” because walang hiya naman ako e. See you at Clark!

    Wow, thanks for the license to scream after our next long run…hopefully there will be a lot more to come. See you at Clark. And maybe before that at VSO.

  6. Hi Jaymie,

    Thanks for joining the race. I’m glad you had a great time joining the event.

    Sayang I wasn’t able to chat after. Hanggang bati lang. :) Was busy pressing the the timer for 5K runners.

    So will you be joining the halloween run this Friday?

    Hey taki, congrats again! A lot of the runners are happy with the well organized event. I’ll be out of town on the 31st so I’ll be missing the Halloween race. May costume ka na?

  7. Wow, congrats! I’d agree it was organized well, having uber-helpful marshalls guiding me along the 3k path. They even helped me cross the busy road right at the turnaround at the Barangay Hall! Even better, I broke my PR by almost 5 minutes with a time of around 22 min.s (that’s already fast for me)! My grandparents were there also to cheer me on. Anyway, see you at Clark for NB! Too bad I can’t join the 5k…

    P.S. I really like the new banner!

    Ey congrats cougcat! High five! Too bad we didn’t see each other after the run. Why can’t you join 5k at NB?

  8. hey jaymie,
    it is nice to see you off your homecourt once in a while.gives us aliens the chance to run our homecourt too and not be chicked by the bullrunner.the way you have been running lately gives me the impression that your singa21 will be an understatement of sorts for you.i think a 42 for you is forthcoming sooner than you think and it is just there for your taking-peanuts,for you.trust in the legs and the heart,42 is just a number.

    Thanks Jonel! Let’s think about the marathon after Singapore. If I finish the half unscathed (read: no injuries) then yes maybe a marathon will be achievable by next year. Crossing my fingers that my knees and shins don’t give up on me. No more races in my homecourt…all in your area na!

  9. Hey TBR! Our group also ran an additional 10-12k after the race, but I just barely finished a total of around 22-23k for the day because I raced the 10k (PR 49.23!). I was spent!

    You’re right, the race started late. I should really look around more at the starting line so that I can formally introduce myself. And yes, the run yesterday was well-organized (vis-a-vis KOTR). Kudos to Fort Striders!

    Btw, re NB Run in Clark, word of caution – the road is cement, and I’ve heard of several runners who got injured last year after running that race because of the cemented road. Moreover, the route is not shaded (it is after all, Clark, which is exposed to the sun). I’m thinking of skipping the NB Run (though I’ve registered already for the 25k), so as not to jeopardize my 42k run in Singapore in December. =)

    After your 21k in Singapore, you should do a 42k in HK in Feb! The route is amazing – you cross the Tsing Yi Bridge!

    Hi Wency! Woah, great time…Congrats! Thanks for the warning about the concrete roads of Clark. I’ll ask around and decide too if I’m willing to risk it before Singapore. Have you ran HK? My husband will kill me already if I run another race abroad. If ever, a local marathon will be fine with me. It’s nice to have friends and family around when you cross the finish :)

  11. Hi Jaymie! I was with Carolyn that day, and actually saw you at the start line. I wanted to go over and say hello but you had your “game face” on and i got intimidated. hahaha. silly i know…I’ll make sure to say hi next time…

    Until the next run….

    Stella, you’re funny. That’s wasn’t my “game face” but my sleepy, training run face. Hope to see you next time!

  12. Hey Jaymie!! It was nice running with you and Jay again. Oo nga, it’s okay to scream “I love to ruuun”. Im just like Jay…Diba we were already screaming during the race cheering for our running friends.
    We did good in maintaining our training pace but i felt you and jay wanted to push that “race mode” button and sprint the last 2k. he he he. See you!!

    Hey pacer, I was surprised that we could maintain a 5:30 “training pace.” Kaya naman pala eh. Next race, let’s sprint to the finish and scream at the same time…what you say? haha

  13. Hi Ms. Jaymie! saw you during run and actually sumasabay ako sa pace nyo para di ako maiwan :)

    Tanong ko lang po sana kung anong tatak ng hydration belt nyo? I’m planning to buy pero ayoko kasi nung madaming flasks yung sa inyo 1 lng ata yun. Thanks and God Bless!

    Jhunie, nasaan ka? Sana nakisali ka na rin sa kwentuhan. haha.

    I use the amphipod runlite 4. Purchased it online from the US and had a relative carry it home. It comes with 4 flasks which you can add/remove depending on your needs for the run. Usually I carry only one flask for a 10k. Long runs i carry one or two.

  15. Ey congrats cougcat! High five! Too bad we didn’t see each other after the run. Why can’t you join 5k at NB?
    ~~~
    Thanks! I’m so happy I’ll give out virtual pies! *hands out pies* Why can’t I join? There’s an age limit–I think only 13+ can join :-( I’m not sure though, I don’t know where my mom found out. Anyway, if I can’t join, maybe I’ll just go for the Kid’s FunRun or simply run around Clark (You know, like what you did after Octoberun! (-: )
  19. hey tbr, NB 25km or not, I’m sure you’d do well in SG Half…just dont hammer the NB run…resist, resist…NB run last year was pretty much well organized…experienced tribe of eric really did well handling that race…plus a 25km in November, and a 21km in December is really great for a 42km in Feb 2009 (wink wink)…run to it.
  21. Another missed opportunity to see you and the other runner bloggers.
    My daughter Eia got sick the night before Oct. 26 (sigh . . .)
    Hope to see you at VSO. Sana this time, magkatotoo na ang pangarap ko.
    Congrats on your 1st 20k Jaymie! Relax ka lang sa NB Power Race. Yes, you’ll be running on cement road and unshaded path and part hilly. Do you know the cut-off time for 10k? My friends are asking.
