Bad Run

This morning’s run with the hubby in Bonifacio Global City was a BAD one on so many counts:

1) Attack of the Mountain Bikers. Where did they all come from? There were over 50 mountain bikers circling the BHS loop when we arrived. There were double the usual number of runners, but we were still outnumbered by the biking peeps. Hubby and I decided to leave the loop and run the roads behind S&R, near British School instead.

2) Early Breakfast. Early into the run, I was chatting with hubby when something—was it a baby fly or a tiny rock?—flew into my mouth and slid down my throat! I attempted to cough it out, but to no avail. Took a big gulp of water to flush it down. Eew.

3) The Bratty Knee. The dry needling last Thursday completely healed my minor shin splints. But, as expected, the Runner’s Knee continued to rear its ugly head. My PT had told me that the knee would only recover through my own efforts (read: strengthening exercises) and with time. So, at 8km, I slowed down and eventually stopped.

4) No Sweat. No, I don’t mean the run was easy. I literally mean, I didn’t sweat at all! It was so cool and breezy this morning that my sweat glands kicked up their feet and slept through the run. I felt like I didn’t even work out.

5) PMS. Nothing is ever fine nor positive for a woman who is PMS-ing. To tell you the truth, I may be exaggerating with Nos. 1 to 4 because my hubby seemed completely satisfied with his run (although that may be due to the fact that he didn’t swallow a rock nor suffer any injuries.)

Good thing I found this video on youtube to cheer me up.  It’s called THE DAY AFTER THE MARATHON, a commercial from the Flora London Marathon…

Props for the video; the bloody shirt at the end was funny.
Will this happen to us on March 9, 2009?

Bloody shirt may happen to you and not to us women. Phew. Just remember two words: Body Glide :)

  3. Hi Jaymie. ;) there are a lot of mtbikers in the Fort now because there is a new offroad trail that was just recently opened to the public. It’s inside the Phil Army camp near McKinley. Meet-ups are usually set at BHS. It is a Saturday kaya siguro marami ka nakita. ;)

Oh and re your knee, miss nya na siguro ako kakuwentuhan. hehe… seriously, i hope the knee becomes ok soon. ;)

see you sometime and regards to Miguel! :D

Oh thanks for the info Vimz. Kasama ka doon sa MTBikers na nag-attack sa amin noh?! hehe

Baka kaya masakit yung tuhod ko. Na-mimiss ka na? :)

  4. Ha ha ha … now that’s funny … ain’t laughing at you, I’m laughing with you specially with #2 … I can relate totally (ha ha ha) since I run after work (6-8pm) I get a extra protein from my runs. I could picture you trying to cough out whatever it was you sucked in (hilarious)

I can also relate to with 1, 3, and 4 and I can understand #5 absolutely (experience with wifey) :D

Take it easy with the knee and see ya on the road – it’s a looooong 2009.

Wow idnod, thanks for laughing WITH me ha :) See you around!

  6. thefitmommy and I ran in MOA this morning. this was my first time to run in MOA and was surprised to see a lot of bikers! it was a bit scary thinking that a biker might sideswipe you.

btw, nice video. it really made me laugh. :D

I agree, wilbert. It’s no joke to get sideswiped or hit by a bike. Reminder for all of us runners to be careful.

  7. Hahaha that is such a funny video. I’m gonna post on my blog as well. So funny cause it’s so true. Happy New Year Bullrunner! Sorry the run didn’t go as well as planned. Shucks, some runs are just like that but nicer runs are just around the corner. Way to go on the extra protein:) Mmmmm…

Happy New Year Rick! I hope you’re right :)

  9. Smart thinking Jaymie. As long as you continue to have patience and discipline, you’re knee injury will be a thing in the past, and you’re gonna be back in healthy running form again.

I know I have the discipline. As for the patience, I’m working on that. Getting a bit sungit and frustrated already. Arrrgghh…

  10. So was it a small fly or a little stone? eck… Just as long as you dont get lbm or sick, that’s fine.

Hala nag post ako dito. ; )

If the people in Fear Factor don’t get sick, then I probably wont haha. Welcome back to commenting, mark! :)

  14. Haha! What a great TVC! I certainly can relate – especially with that bit on the stairs and the downhills… Thankfully, no bloody shirts, hehe. And it’s no easy feat accompanying my wife as she briskly walked around, shopping, in the afternoon and going up and down the subway, after my marathon. =)

Re your run, I actually saw you and your hubby as you were going down the slope from IS. I wanted to stop and introduce myself, but you and your husband looked peeved. =P Sorry to say, I was doing my 1-hour mountain bike ride from Rockwell and back. Your hubby might have attacked me! =P

Re the bikers, if you’re referring to moutain bikers (which is different from road bikers), then it’s because of a new mountain trail near McKinley Hill. I’ve also noticed the influx of more bikers, and I think it’s because of that new trail. What’s frustrating is, I’d rather run on the road (asphalt) at the BHS loop than on the concrete sidewalk, but because of the bikers, I can’t.

Take good care of the knee, TBR. It’s ironic, but I believe one thing that can help your knee get better – and prevent pain from recurring – is to… hop on a bike! =)

Wency, sayang, wish you could’ve called our attention. We weren’t peeved at the MTbikers since hubby owns an MTB too :) We ran the IS route twice, so if you caught us at the 2nd round, I was peeved at the injury. Super angry and sungit really. Lumabas na horns ko nun. As I’ve said, BAD RUN. hehe

Same with you, hubby and I drive all the way to BHS to run on asphalt. But with all the bikers there, runners are forced to take the concrete sidewalk. I guess I’ll have to search for new asphalted roads or drive all the way to Ultra instead.

I hope to get my bike 1st quarter this year. Right now, I just hop on the stationary bike at the gym. When I’m brave enough, I’ll join those spinning classes.

  15. omg, i can’t believe you have runner’s knee too!! I’ve had it for a while now, and I can’t seem to be rid of it. I’ve missed one too many runs already!!

what did your PT advise you to do? did he also forbid you from running? :(

    i feel your pain, LITERALLY!

Migoogle, I had runner’s knee Jan2007 and it took me a couple of months to fully recover. This is my 2nd bout with it…argh…but I hope to recover earlier since I know better now.

First thing is to buy insoles (spenco) and get the right shoe (for me it’s any motion control shoe). Next: strengthen your quads. I do strength training at the gym and exercises at home taught by my PT. Focus on exercises that strengthen one leg at a time (since runners have their foot on the ground one at a time too). I know that the only reason why it recurred for me is that I stopped weights and yoga for 2 months when my dad got sick. Soon after, I ran NB 25 then Singapore Half. Recipe for injury really.

By the way, my doctor, PT, and acupuncturist advised me to continue training.

    Hope you recover soon!
