Missing Asian Hospital’s RUNew

After a fairly good 8k Sunday morning run with the hubby, I was psyched.  We had lunch at The Fort Strip and, over lunch, all the positive energy in my body told me that I could join Asian Hospital’s RUNew this coming Sunday.  Since there’s no 10k in the race, we decided that we would run a relaxed 5k + 5k after the race.  Woohoo!

In less than an hour, I was already at  Nike Bonifacio High Street filling up the forms.  That’s when all things turned sour.  On the form, it said the assembly area was McKinley Hill.  On a normal day, that would have added a spark of excitement to the upcoming race.  But, with my ultra sensitive knee, the steep ascents and worse, downhills, would have my kneecap acting up.  I left the store dismayed.

To make things worse, by the end of the day, my kneecap had flared up again.  Probably my knees way of telling me:  What makes you think you can race already?  Relax.  Be patient.  I’m going to get better soon.  Well, what can I do, I’m bullheaded.

  6. Hi Jaymie. I fully empathize with you. I have the same nagging ITB pain. I just want to share with you my own managment of that “injury”. I enclosed in quotation marks the term injury because based on my technical knowledge and experience, limited as they may be, ITB is not exactly an injury, but a symptomatic strain on the iliotibial band caused by muscle imbalances in the lower limbs. One of the predisposing factors is training errors (e.g., excessive distance in a single run, increasing mileage too quickly, inadequate warm-up, running on the same side of a crowned road). These I have corrected since. As for the management, here’s my regimen:
    1) Ice, compression, elevation, NSAIDs, and rest until acute symptoms subside (at the onset of the strain where I can hardly walk properly, much more go down the stairs , I decided to completely rest for 5 days, and currently I just run 3x a week)
    2) Stretching exercises should include the hip abductors, flexors, and lateral thigh muscles (right now I do, daily, iliotibial band, groin, hamstring, quadriceps, calf muscle, and plantar fascia stretches)
    3) non-weight bearing strengthening exercises, such as leg lifts, and isometric exercises for the knee flexion, extension hip abduction, and adduction can be initiated when pain free, followed by concentric and eccentric strengthening of the hip and thigh muscles
    4) Hill running shld be avoided until asymptomatic.
    5) Graduated return to pre-ITB running mileage (right now I’m doing an ave of 12k each running session compared to 18k I used to chalk up, but getting there. I’ve registered for the 15k event of RUNew)
    6) Ice massage before and after running may be helpful.

Too bad, you have to skip the RUNew race. You being the Bullrunner, I could just imagine how much restraint you have to impose upon yourself. But you did the right thing, it’s for the long-haul. Besides, there are so many fav races up ahead. Hopefully, you would recover in time for the Condura Race.

    Best regards.
