A New Leaf

Funny how I feel like I’m starting anew right smack in the middle of the year.  Amid the chaos caused by H1N1 and the storm Feria, I sit here typing with a sense of stability, fortitude, and an eagerness to move forward with my running.

For over 6 months (yes, it was that long), I dealt with runner’s knee, ITBS, post-tib tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis all on my left leg due to my flat feet.  And, all that time, I felt like I was in limbo.  I could not commit to any training program nor plan for any race.  I didn’t know what problem would crop up next.  The physical pain from injuries were easy  to take.  It was the emotional stress that was pure torture—having a dream marathon stolen from me and worse not knowing when I could lace up again without worries.

That’s all over now.  There hasn’t been any pain for over a month.  I’ve got a race in mind for the end of August and I have a running program that will prepare me well enough for it.  It feels good to adhere to a running program again (I started this week)—pencilling in a weekly plan into my journal and ticking this off with a pen once accomplished; it’s been too long since I’ve done that.

While it’s raining outside, the skies are bright on my front.  I can once again dream of how far I can go with my feet.

  3. I believe we have all had similar problems and experiences. Ive treated a lot of patients/runners with full blown major depressive and anxiety episodes as a result of overtraining, incorrect diets, and other frustrations that normally accompany our chosen sport. Good luck and God bless on your training program. Its good that you are into one as this will really help minimize the previous injuries you have had. It may help if you also remember the past – your first race – the joy/elation you had then, etc. And just a word of advice (to all runners as well) – the rate you loss weight is directly correlated to emotional stress. Do not lose more than three pounds a month regardless of your current weight. Good luck again and happy running.

  4. “back to basics” and closely adhere to the basic principles of training by concentrating first on your long runs & easy runs. there is no need to rush for speed as you will be preventing yourself from injuries. remember, simplicity & specificity of training. good luck & see you soon!

  10. Hi Jaymie, have you been running too many laps in the same direction on the track ,because that may lead to a left- right strenght imbalance in the hips.Similarly, running on cambered roads places different stress on the inside as opposed to the outside leg, which can result in the same problem. I have read fast running tends to be less problematic for ITBS sufferers than slower running.they suggest your return to normal training by supplementing your cross=training workouts with a few relaxed sprints to maintain as much of your running-specific fitness adaptation as possible while you recover.Good luck

  15. I had a severe left knee problem as well. I am healthy now and am training for a marathon on July 26. I went to Intercare (this is not an advertisment) where they combine the Graston technique with physical therapy. I came to a point where I could not complete 2K. Now I’m very okay. You might like to consider that.
