You can't exit until you hand off to the next runner. On one relay we left the last runner of Van 1 waiting, shivering in the dark because we got lost on our way to the van exchange - we felt soooo bad! So good to hear that you had fun and you bonded with your relay mates. They are such fun events. It also seemed like you got a wide range of temperatures while you were there - hot and humid, cold and foggy. Wouldn't it be great if a similar race existed in PI?
