Smart Sports on Subic International Marathon

Smart Sports issued a statement regarding the recently held Subic International Marathon below…

SMART SPORTS THANKS SIM 2009 RUNNERS AND ALL PARTNERS

At the outset, we at Smart Sports would like to extend our congratulations to all the runners, most especially to the marathoners of the recently concluded Subic International Marathon 2009. However, it has come to our attention the numerous comments of the participants of SIM 2009 regarding the technical aspect of the race and if there are shortcomings we will make it a point to discuss this with the race organizers. Rest assured to the running community that all these comments, feedbacks and suggestions are carefully being reviewed and will be kept as reference for other marathons Smart will be supporting.

Allow us to take this opportunity to share with the running community the reasons why Smart Sports decided to support SIM:

1. We are a sponsor. Much the same way we will be when we sponsor other marathons

2. We believe in the transformational advocacy of the Philippine National Police through its program director Ret. Gen. Sam Tucay and Chief PNP Jesus Verzosa

3. We realize that through SIM, we will be able to identify Filipino runners that can represent the country in international races. Kudos to the only 2 Filipinos (Hernanie Sore and Alquin Bolivar) to make it in the top ten who gave every ounce of willpower for flag and country

4. We simply want to promote a sport where hundreds and thousands of passionate Filipinos love

5. Sports tourism: to showcase the beauty of the Philippines. Particularly the beauty of SCTEX and Subic Bay

Since Smart Sports has committed to support Philippine marathon in the long run, we ask for the running community’s understanding and patience as Smart is very new to this. Smart has already pledged to support several international marathons for 2010 and we assure the running community that through partnerships with seasoned race organizers, we will make these marathons enjoyable and memorable which running enthusiasts (both local and foreign) can look forward to each year.

Smart – we’re helping sports… we’re helping running…

Maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat!

  1. Sir,
Sana sa 2010 maconsider niyo maglagay ng tubig. Ok lang po sana kung may mga tindahan sa paligid but wala diba? Be Smart next time.

  2. It’s good that Smart realizes the shortcomings of this race.

It was being touted as the most prestigious marathon in the country. Too bad the organizers in charge of logistics couldn’t back it up.

I hope next year, they don’t just talk the talk but walk the walk!

  3. One of the most chaotic marathon I’ve ever seen. Sabay sabay ang 3k/5k/10k/ at 21k. Ang gulo gulo.

  5. actually kasalanan lahat ng organizer. parang Eventologist yung pangalan na nasa poster. kawawa naman mga sponsor napagbibintangan. pinaka magulong race na nakita ko. its like the organizer’s first time ever to do an event. I hope next time Smart will be Smart enough to choose who they work with.

  7. Ok naman yong race pang-PULIS talaga kaya lang d naman lahat ng participants ay Pulis. . . So we suggest for the better kasi kawawa naman matandang pulis sa huli muntik ng mamatay dahil sa walang tubig.

  9. i had supported my son from all sports competition he joined in since he was 5 yrs old: like in national competition of phil taek wondo ass. he’d received medals, in philippine amatuer swimming ass.(pasa) and southern tagalog amatuer swimming ass.(stasa) also received medals, in milo marathon regional elimination and national level again got a medal/trophy, but what happen to sibic INTERNATIONAL thinking that this event will be a better exposure to my 12 yrs old son, we traveled 6 hrs going to subic and witnessing such a mess in marathon, after firing for the start many runners at the back run at the exit of the oval while other runners just got started and half way in the oval goint to the exit, come to think of it 5k finished first than the 3k, a 20 yr old finish first the 3k when all along we thought that 3k marathon are for kids. WHERE IS THE FAIR AND JUST FOR THIS KIND OF EVENT. I’M REALLY DISAPPOINTED. i met a kid who’s only 9 yrs old, comes from ilo-ilo and he run so fast overtaking my son and somehow our country will have a better chance in this line of sports BUT if disappointement prevails to all the kids who joined, our country have NO FUTURE at all come to think of it.

  10. I hope the organizers and the sponsors realize that the safety of the participants is of utmost importance in any sporting event. The image of any sponsor could easily be tarnished if any accident happens during the race, specially if the cause could have easily been avoided, such as supplying lights and sufficient drinks THROUGH OUT the course (which is basic for any event). That being said, I believe that it is also the sponsor’s resposibility to make sure the the necessary precautions for runner’s safety is addressed because their reputation is at stake. I hope the sponsors learn from this experience. I know SMART will be “smart”er next time. I ran both QCIM and SIM and still cannot decide which one of them put my life in more danger (the open traffic along Commonwealth or the darkness in STEX). I have ran over 75 marathons and the conditions in QCIM and SIM are, I’m sad to say, the worst I have encountered. I hope next time will be different.
