Half Marathon PR at Run United 1…Not!

Yup, that was my goal!  I wanted to break my PR for the half marathon which I ran at Run United 2011.  So, for the most part of January and February, Run United 1 was constantly on my mind.  I was thinking of Run United 1 when I ran my tempos, when I strength trained at the gym, and even while I ate (I wanted to lose weight before RU so I could run faster).  I was so focused on RU that I was half expecting the husband to throw a fit of jealousy over “RU” with whom I was spending too much time with.

Too bad then that, after a solo tempo run a couple of weeks ago, I felt my Morton’s Neuroma acting up again.  (I interrupt this blog post for a special message to Morton’s Neuroma: “I hate you!”)  So, as always, I backed off with the mileage and went on a mad hunt for wider shoes to keep Morton’s at bay.  As of now, the Neuromas have subsided with rest, but I’m still in search of that perfect shoe with a wider toe box before I run any distance above 10k.  (To the big running shoe brands, especially Asics, KSwiss, Brooks, and New Balance, please please bring in a few D widths for women with bunions and Neuromas like me!   Promise, I’ll buy more shoes if you do!)  For now, the only one that let’s me run short distances without discomfort are my Nike Frees.  Love ‘em!

So, how was your Run United run?  Tell me because I feel like the outcast in high school who was left out of the biggest party of the year!  So frustrated was I this morning that I jumped into the pool, swam 2.2km, then had a good breakfast of pancakes and slathered it with tons of peanut butter!  Hah! Take that, Mortons!

  1. Perfect weather and route Jaymie. You could have break your PR should Morton’s did not appear. Rio just continue to raise the bar.

  2. I ran walked the RU1 21K today and I thought I was doing good time, but I ended up 6-7 minutes slower than Condura – also did not follow Lit’s advice to run 15K and walk the last 16 – will start the tapering tomorrow nalang!

  4. 4,000 21K runners! Whew! Couldn’t run:walk on the Buendia-Kalayaan flyover as runners were packed tight going thru it. Wanted to run slower in preparation for TBRDM, but ended up running fast as everyone was running fast. hehehe

After the run, we rushed on over to San Fernando to cheer on the BDM 102 runners. It was so humbling that the 21K RU1 was just a walk in the park compared to what these runners achieved!

    • Wow Mikey! What a day for you! Congrats! Hey, don’t sell yourself short with your own achievements. Ultramarathoners are truly admirable, but so are shorter distance runners :)

  6. if you have neuromas, its not about on how wide is the toe box that really matters but its how much pressure are you placing on the site of lesion (site of pain). Newton’s running shoes have “sophisticated” toe wedge in their soles are the answer to your problem with an adjunct low dye taping using an athletic tape with special emphasis on the painful area are strongly recommended. World class athletes experience that injury. Knowing how not to trigger it and the science behind it are really important.

    • Reymart, seriously? Do you know where I can learn more about it? I’ve researched about neuromas and so far I’ve read that it’s about the width of the shoe. Won’t Newtons encourage me to land midfoot (which I already do) where the neuromas are?

  7. Hi Jaymie,
I’m not sure if my cas would in any way help yours..
I used to have a bunnion on my left big toe that even with just a mild pain, my left foot just flies outward a bit involuntarily while running…I had it corrected in a span of 2 years using toe inserts and a small plastic contraption that pulls open the big toe while sleeping…(i forgot the name) and of course my work and leisure shoes are wide now…
