Over 200 runners showed up for Bull Session 2 at Bonifacio High Street earlier this morning.

Bull Sessions head coach, Lit Onrubia, gave a talk on long runs to prepare TBR Dream Marathoners early on in their training.

LIT’S KEY POINTS:

The LSD (Long, slow distance): putting increasingly larger building blocks in place to support you through 42k.

  • Emphasis on the “L” and the “S”. L = We start at 50mins and we build to 30k. S = slower than marathon pace.
  • How slow is “slow”? 55-75secs/km slower than marathon pace, especially once your LSD starts going longer than 14k.
  • Why run slow? Bec you get the same endurance benefit but lessen injury risk and receovery time compared to a faster run.

IMG_7107

Do’s and Don’ts:
  •  Don’t run the day before or the day after an LSD. Rest and recover. If you need to exercise, do something “non-running”.
  • Don’t use the LSD as a race rehearsal (i.e. running LSD at marathon pace). There’s a time and place for that and the race rehearsal gets longer for experienced runners (i.e. those who’ve been running for over a year and have done three 21Ks).
  •  Don’t ignore the walk breaks at the early stages of your run. The more you bank early, the more you’ll have later on.

Then, we were off on a 55 minute run following the TBR Dream Marathon Training Program by Coach Jim Lafferty.

We split up into 4 groups and applied the run-walk technique with varying intervals per group.

We were like a mini-race with Gatorade stations at both the start and midway point of our run.

We ended with a cool down led by Coach John Lozada.

No better way to cover the long runs than with fellow future marathoners, right?  It was great fun.  Until the next time!

Running for Jamba Juice

Saturday, 12 November 2011  |  Healthy Food + Recipes

Jamba Juice is in Manila! This is great news for us Pinoys as we become more health conscious. But, it’s even better news for us runners since fruit shakes and juices are great ways for us to nourish our bodies.

The kiddos and I dropped by for the VIP opening of Jamba Juice last Thursday at the new area of Bonifacio High Street (across the street from R.O.X.) Met my sister, Janice, and her kids there, too.

– with my sister and our kids –

We spotted celebrities like Isabel Oli and Raya Mananquil. But, it was more interesting to bump into even more athletes like Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan and daughters Ella and baby Solana, Tessa Prieto-Valdes, Leah Caringal, Itong Torres, Gene Tamesis, Nich Bautista, and, of course, owners Jim and Mavis Fuentebella.

– Isabel Oli looked stunning –

I had a tough time choosing my order from all the fruit drinks, but finally decided on Fruit Frenzy as my shake for that night. I hoped the nutrient infusion into my system wouldn’t just make me run faster at this Sunday’s race but fend off jetlag, too!

IMG_7066
– Jamba Juice staff worked fast to fill the long list of orders –

I seriously believe that Jamba Juice and I are a match made in heaven. My close friends know that I have a deep obsession with peanut butter and oatmeal. So, it’s my goal for the next few weeks to try these aside from the shakes:

1) Steel Cut Oatmeal – topped with sugar crumble?! How good can this be? Drool!

1

2) Peanut Butter Moo’d – Awesome way to get our protein requirements for the day eh? (Oh I hope this is good because I’ve been dreaming about it already)

2

Hope to see you guys there.  Looks like the kids and I will be there often!

TBR on Manila Bulletin

Friday, 11 November 2011  |  Press

Hey, I just heard I was featured in the Wellbeing Section of Manila Bulletin, Nov. 1, 2011.  This was about my running the Guam KoKo Road Race last October 16, 2011.  Sigh, fond memories of that rainy race. Thanks to Nina for informing!
