Condura Race – Part 1

“Are you joining Condura Race?” Friends had asked me this over a dozen times and like a broken record I would sadly reply “Nope, I can’t.” Without the Little Bull Runner to pace me, I could not trust myself to run safe and slow turning a blind eye to faster runners. I was pretty sure I would not just run, I would race it paying no attention to my knee. And so I practiced self-discipline and passed up registration albeit with a grunt and a heavy heart.

Turns out I couldn’t keep myself away from this road race no matter how hard I tried. Yesterday morning, I woke up at 5 a.m., had a light breakfast, showered, and put on my running attire. By 6 a.m., I arrived at the NBC Tent to see hundreds of runners behind the starting line. It was an awesome sight, one that I had not witnessed in what felt like years (but it’s actually been just over a month) and I was as giddy as a school girl about it. Too bad then that I came just to watch and support friends who were running. Nope, I wasn’t going to run injured. What do you think of me?! I’m certainly not a stubborn, running obsessed freak! Or am I?

Anyhow, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I had as much fun as an observer as I did as a runner. I watched runners excited over the race that was to begin, but it was even better to be on the other end of the finish line as runners of all shapes, sizes and personalities trickled in from their 3k, 5k or 10k runs. I saw a mother and young daughter raising their arms up as if they had won the olympics, a serious runner enjoying the 10k as much as the marathon he finished last week, an actor who looked like he didn’t even break a sweat after crossing the finish line, and a whole lot of runners who obviously had a great time. I saw a lot of things, I tell you, and I’ve got the photos to prove it.

Start 10k 1
- 10K runners await the start of the race -
Start 10k 3

Jollibee
- Jollibee came in at 56.37 mins breaking his 10k PR! -

Nanette M. & Friend

Phoemela Barranda

  5. Buti na lang I finished before Jollibee! hehehe Why was he there at the first place? Did they give out burjers?

Dami nga celebs and those you see in the papers. Great to see the other runners as well. You kinda get to recognize them after a while. I was surprised to see Ms. Tessa Prieto. She was taking pictures at the flyover on our way back. Katabi ko pala kinukunan, hindi ako. Sarap lang ng feeling, kunyari.
    ; )

A friend of mine recognized you from the blog. When we looked for you, seems you got lost in the crowd. Same thing happened when I tried to meet Bald Runner. I saw him upon finishing but only for a second. Weird cuz I felt like seeing a celeb too. You two are celebs in the running blog industry. ; )

There was a group cheering us at the turn for the last kilometer. A white guy who was wearing a South Afrcia Singlet was just in front of me. Would’ve wanted to chat and ask about the surf ski scene but was just too tired at that point.

It was a well organized race. Sana may timing chip na so we dont have to slow down at the finish line for time recording purposes. Also, I just hope we can skip the uphills next time and just have a relatively flat course for a change. : ) Sira pace ko on kilometer 8! (Flyover climb from shell back to Fort) It would have been a sub 50 for me.

  8. yup, i concur with mark. celebrity na nga si bullrunner. at least, that’s how i felt like when I saw her in person last saturday, parang nakakita ako ng artista. Saw you at the condura race but wasn’t able to say hi, diyahe eh (artista ka nga di ba). Twas nice to finally meet you in person, hope to see you running soon in future races.

  9. hi bullrunner, if it makes you feel any better, phoemela baranda did not run the whole length (walking and chatting is more like it) that’s why she still looked fresh after the race! :)

  10. Hey Jaymie, too bad I didn’t see you yesterday. I finally got to meet some of the Happy Feet members like Mon, Aljo, Maui, Ben and Patrick. I saw Bald Runner too while running but I couldn’t find him after the race.

Seems like a lot of fun being a spectator too, you get to see all the celebs :-)

Like I told Patrick, it was a very well organized and enjoyable race and one we hope to keep on joining year after year.

  11. Marga, if Ige reads this, he’ll make you run 10 extra laps even after you’ve eaten pizza! haha. If I’m not mistaken, the little girl is Nina Huang’s daughter.

Taki, I’m serious. He told me he had to burn off the Yum burger’s he had for breakfast. hahaha.

Atty Jon, oo nga eh. Kulang nalang si Boy Abunda. :)

Baldrunner, I heard you were there but too bad we didn’t see each other. See you at the next race!

Markfb, aw we didn’t see each other! Next time!

Levy, so nice to have finally met you and your wife! And thanks a lot for the Chi running DVD. Ang ganda ng timing ko! hahaha

Patrick, congrats with your race! Looking forward to next year! Thanks again for the cool keychain! Love it.

Sublime, that sucks! I’ve always been worried about that at races since the robbers know that everyone is away for a specific amount of time. Look at the bright side, you still have your car.

Newbie, oh yes that makes me feel better. At first I thought she had a make up artist retouch her hahahaha.

DATC, oh I’m sure we’ll bump into each other often! Good luck swimming with Nonoy.

  12. This is a great entry. I pitty the guy in the Jollibee suit though. He must be baking inside. ‘Wonder what the PR would be sans the suit :)

  18. Hi, Bull runner. Im Maclan from Malaysia and have been joining some races in the philippines. I enjoyed reading your post. The other day while I was reading your post about the Mizuno race (which I joined too) there’s a section where I can register and join a running club OR to find a running buddy. I fail to find that website after that. Im interested to join any running club in Manila. My email add is maclanmatthews@hotmail.com. Hope to hear from you and all the best in your running.
