Animo Triathlon Results

Results of the Animo triathlon are out. No big surprise here, I had a fairly clear idea of my performance…

Animo Mini Sprint

I was 8th out of 17 women. Not bad for a first timer who was enjoying herself throughout the race. It felt good to know that the 1st and 2nd placers were teenagers—no way I could outpace these kids on land or in the pool.

If I were to grade myself, here’s how I think I did against the competition:

1) Swim: B. I believe I swam well but my pauses in between each lap ate up a good chunk of my time. I’m pretty optimistic about the swim portion though. Before the tri, it took me 37 minutes (with long breaks) for 650m. This morning, I swam 750m in 32 mins (yes, still with breaks). It’s not a great time, but there’s improvement. Of course, I’m still pathetic compared to Ani de Leon who swam 1.9k in 35.36…phew.

2) Bike: C (or maybe even D). I want to hit myself on the head for the bike portion. I relaxed here. During the race, you could have put a sun hat on my head, a basket on my bike, and asked me to whistle and I would’ve looked like Mary Poppins on wheels. Note to self: Slowly introduce to hubby the idea of buying a new roadie for myself. Target time: 1 month. Do wives get presents during Halloween?

3) Run: A: I placed 4th in running, but I know I could’ve gone faster. I’m over a minute away from the fastest runner, but just seconds away from 2nd and 3rd (Carolyn that’s you…hehe. Congrats for placing 4th!)

Congratulations to Harry Tan who placed 2nd in the men’s mini-sprint for his 1st triathlon! Sounds like someone is ready for the Sprint.  Congrats also to Dedette, Ting, and Me-Anne! We did it!

  1. Congratulations again! I’m sure you’ll improve tremendously in the swim and bike portions in the coming months. If you need help on buying a bike, a friend of mine co-owns a bike shop, he can help you find a good deal. A roadie is on my wish list too, hehe.

Thanks DATC! I’ll keep that in mind when I’m ready to buy one.

  2. congratulations Jaymie on your first TRI :) … no more TRI events for me this year. I need to focus on training for my first full marathon this December. Whatever happens, I will always be a RUNNER at heart…. hope to see you at KOTR.

We more or less have the same goals..pero ako half lang :)

  3. Yes definitely, a road bike would help raise that bike grade.

And a biking coach, and cleats, and long bike rides out of town…

  4. Jaymie,

I give you an A in everything, naks, sipsip ba? But that was a good performance for a first TRI considering your apprehensions in swimming. You know what? Tama naman yung comments mo sa bike portion, this is the part where you should relax. At least, that’s what the halimaws in tri tell me. Relax during the bike leg, so when you start the run, you’re fresh as a daisy, as if you’re just beginning the race itself. Oks ba? Congrats again. BTW, the offer still stands about getting the roadie in Quiapo. Best deal in the metro I think?

    Virgie

Virgie, let me remind you that I don’t have anymore sportsbands to give out :) Oh, I didn’t know that about the bike portion. I thought it was fight fight fight all the way! Yes, thanks thanks for the offer to go bike hunting in Quiapo. Sounds like a whole new adventure. I’ll probably go there if I don’t find a good 2nd hand? Bahala na. I’ll decide when I have the moolah. I’m still waiting for it to fall from heaven :)

  5. Thanks Jaymie! Biking alone is a bit of a bummer though. I think there’s something wrong w/their running time though I know I wouldn’t have beaten you in that portion. My shoes broke in the end!

Hey, you’re a fast runner so I think the results are right. Your shoes broke?! Buti nalang near the end of the race.

  6. What bike do we need for tri? I use a mountain bike too but I thought it was pretty good, maybe I just don’t know how the other bikes feel.. hmmm.

Oh yeah, you used an MTB too. Wow, you’re going to be so fast on a roadie. I was pretty happy with my MTB until I tried a road bike the day before the race. BIG difference. I sort of panicked because I realized how slow I would be. I think typical road bike will do. The tri bike we drooled over might be expensive already… unless you’re willing to invest. :)

  7. Congratulations and if I recall correctly you received your Garmin and Nathan belt last Halloween too so perhaps an early Christmas gift is not improbable with your hubby!

PC, you’ve got a great memory! You’re right! Halloween is definitely TBR’s Christmas. I should tell hubby about that :)

  8. Jaymie,

Thanks, yes, we all made it! The worst leg for me was the bike leg too! Got so scared of falling off and scarring my legs for life, haha! I initially trained using a mountain bike, then my friend made me borrow a road bike and from my test, it improved my time by about 20% so I continued my training using road bike. The bike that I borrowed, eventually I bought, thank God for friends who upgrade. I had the bike fitted for me and the bike fitter said it was like the bike was mine, such is my luck, I was able to reduce my cost by getting a pre-owned roadie fitted for my size and frame.

I am so hooked I bought a bike trainer so that I can train at home. Owner of All Terra the bike shop at Club 650 keeps saying there’s nothing like saddle time to improve your bike time. Hope it works. I have no excuse now, I can train indoors.

    See you at the races!

Wow lucky you Ting. And, can I just say that you do sound hooked. Congratulations to all your triathlete guy friends who encouraged you to try a tri. Sounds like they did a good job :)

  9. hey…galing number eight! my results are so horrible! i hate my swim time..when i do time trial at practice i can do 18 mins compared to the horrendous 28 mins!!!!…got so overwhelmed with all those people swimming like there were sharks in the pool :-) …there’s always a next time…tell me if you find a good deal on the road bike, i want to get one also.

Me-Anne, it was our first time so we’re excused :) We know better now. The swim was really tough. It’s good you didn’t get kicked in the head. Let’s train with along with some “sharks” next time :P

  10. TBR, you’re so funny!! (presents for wife during Halloween). Puede din Thansgiving gift. Pag di pa din puede, advance Christmas gift na. Lets start looking for 2nd hand roadie.

JunC, ask your wife. I’m sure she’ll agree that wives deserve gifts on halloween. :)

  11. jaymie, congrats again for placing within the top 10..hehehe! what was important was the experience and for finishing the race w/out any injury or any problems. good luck on your training for your next road race. see you soon!

  13. Try to get the road bike as an advanced christmas gift perhaps. I’m trying to get mine as a very much delayed birthday gift for myself. Maybe a trisuit for xmas. Hehehe. :)

Good job on the Tri! There’s still another mini sprint and a duathlon around the corner for you. :)

  15. Jaymie,

Just got to visit the blog today. Daming ng happening! Congrats on your first try on Tri!!! Very happy it was not just your event but also for hubby as well. Yan ang magandang teamwork. Checked out Harry’s time, bilis ng takbo nya ha. That’s around 4:06 min/km pace.
It would have made the difference if you were able to use Annie’s bike instead. Mas mabilis talaga but then again, if you’re safety is compromised MTB na nga lang. Maybe its time for you to enroll with Nonoy again and probably get programs na

  16. Hey Jaymie, sometimes a packaged (completely assembled) tri bike may be cheaper than a road bike.. some people kasi prefer to assemble their road bikes (ie buy the parts separately). But i personally think that a road bike would be more comfortable than a tri-bike (especially during bike outs).. the performance difference would be minimal if we are talking distances of less than 40k (olympic distance TRI or DUATHLONS)

I got my bike from All Terra.. it’s a packaged bike so it’s relatively cheaper than an assembled bike. Look for EDMUND or his wife SALVE

  17. Shoes sole partly came off but I didn’t know til the end of the race or else dead meat. I’m still contemplating if a new bike is worth it. I don’t know about it being an investment. How long will the ROI take? ha, ha just kidding.

  18. Hi Jaymie, the good thing about triathlon is that there’s always room to improve in all 3 sports. You did the all-important thing of doing a first one, so the next ones will surely get better.
Btw, the most important matter for getting a road bike is “bike fit”, so better get the right bike frame size for you :-) – Joma

  19. Hi Jaymie, I fully empathize with you on the bike experience. If it is any consolation to you, I was much worse. Not only did I waste six minutes (!) on the swim-bike transition, I spent a good time of the bike leg admiring the dogs being walked on the road. At one point I actually slowed down to watch a beautiful pug walk! Crazy me. I now spend the post-race days finding ways to redeem myself. I am also itching to replace my MTB with a roadbike. Grrrrh..I wish I can do it again soon.

  20. Congratulations to my mentor, inspiration and idol! I want to publish the interview (Jaymie’s Passion) we did last year para makita ng lahat the Jaymie Then and Now. Grabe! What a big leap from ZERO sports (other than running) to TRIATHLON. Can you do it for me, Jaymie? Publish the interview here on your blog? I don’t know how to do it.

  21. Congratulations Jaymie. If you know of future triathlons in the Philippines could you let me know. I’d like to add a Philippines page to our site.

  22. hey TBR congratulations! you’re right about the triathlon (sprint) being fight fight fight all the way…cause thats exactly why you’re the bullrunner too…the cliche in triathlon that says its bathe (swim),rest (bike), and run (run) is meant to intimidate us running purists especially marathoners that after 6 to 8 hours of swimming and biking (IRONMAN) you approach the marathon portion with fresh legs BUT thats because you trained to be fast all the way swimming and biking and still have the energy for the marathon and finish as if you didnt swim and bike at all…thats why i have a lot of respect for the sport…but still, RUNNING is the key and thats where the triathlon is won…good luck with your half marathon!!! when is that so we can prepare the band at the finish…run to it…
