Promises Shwamises

So, I didn’t make it to Doc Fit last Sunday.  I was afraid of aggravating the ITBS, I was exhausted from work that morning, and quite frankly I was simply too lazy to drive all the way to U.P. for a run that I couldn’t even really race in.  Blah…

I did make it to a gut-wrenching yet satisfying dry needling session last Friday.  It successfully loosened up the ITB and tight quads that were pulling on the kneecap.  But, after a 50-minute run-walk-yawn-run-walk-yawn session on the treadmill on Sunday, the injury reared its ugly head again.  Double blah…

I truly think that negativity yields to more negativity and, at the rate I’m going, I may just look at the mirror one day and see a fat, ugly witch (with ITBS, runner’s knee, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis) staring back at me.  So, I’ve made the following promises to myself:

  1. STOP RUNNING. Some of you may be saying “FINALLY!”  But, it really did take me forever (three months of running with injury, to be exact) to accept the fact that rest is really the only answer for me at this point.
  2. STOP THINKING ABOUT THE INJURY. Oh, I can’t even count how many times I’ve browsed through my running journal evaluating my training.  How much time I’ve spent researching ITBS online.  How much effort I put into making my own foam roller (using a PVC pipe and yoga mat).  Or, how many text messages I’ve sent to friends for regular injury updates.  That’s it. I’ll just do my stretches, drills, and hope that things improve from hereon.
  3. CUT LESSEN JUNKFOOD. No running leads to weight gain.  Once I stop running, the weight just comes crawling back despite swimming and spinning.  I’m currently at what I call my “injured weight”: the number that pops up on the weighing scale once I decrease my mileage and increase intake of chocnut due to depression.  Hopefully, I have enough self-discipline to cut back on my favorite snacks.  I bid you farewell, Cheetos,  Munchies, and Stick-o!
  4. BE HAPPY. For now, I’ll just keep myself busy with family, work, spinning and the elliptical. (Can one truly be happy on the elliptical? Blech!)  Oh well, it’ll be fine.  So, I can’t run.  It’s not the end of the world.  Now, if I don’t get to run on the Skyway in Condura Race, that’s an entirely different story!

  4. God is good. He will let us run the Skyway. I haven’t run for 10 days now and will probably just do one long slow run on March 8. After that I rest again. Not the usual race preparation I know, but I draw comfort from what Leica Carpo said in the interview you did: that her forced rest due to a wedding in the family actually made her perform well for her marathon. Her legs were fresh and she was raring to run. I also trust that optimism, will power and divine grace will lead us all to the finish line. See you on the Skies :-)

  5. Hi Jaymie,

Its kind of sad to hear about that, but yeah maybe your right. You need enough rest to aid the healing of your injury. Maybe its time to shift a little gear and try a different sport such as cycling.

Then I’m sure soon enough you’ll back running.

    God Bless. :)

  6. In the CD we both have “Spirit of the Marathon “
Deena Kastor ( Bronze Olympic Medallist ) was out for 12 to 16 weeks because she was injured all she did to maintain her fitness was ride stationary bike, run in the pool and core exercises When she got better she was running at her best and winning road races left and right.
I know it hurts to accept reality but do not worry I’m sure like Deena Kastor you will get better soon and you will be at the top of your game again.
    Take care

  9. hi tbr! im rico, a regular runner, biker and i work as a personal trainer and strength & conditioning coach. fyi, i experienced symptoms of itbs maybe a month ago. and i got really worried so i started to research about it right away. i dont know what injury you “exactly” have but try to visit http://www.itbs.info. the infos i got from that website really helped especially when i tried the PATTSTRAP product that they recommended. its working for me (of course together with self rehab and strengthening), i have not experienced major flareups of my itbs eversince i used that PATTSTRAP. you might wanna check out their site, its http://www.pattstrap.com
    stay healthy! keep running!

  12. Get well soon Jaymie. Keep on writing even you have to rest from running. You have no idea how many novice runners read your blog for guidance on just about anything related to running. Maybe you can do an updated review on running accessories and apparel with price comparison. That would be really nice.

  13. Hi Jaymie,

I know in my heart that your item #1 will just be temporary, you will be back soon.

Please take care and keep us posted. Please do remember too, that you’re an icon and inspiration to many of us.

  15. I’m actually going through the same thing with my QT. This is the point where patience and temptation collides. Hehe. We can only hope that the healing would be fast enough to be able to participate at the Condura Run. Good luck and as the Adidas slogan says…Impossible is Nothing. :)

  17. Hi Jaymie, really sorry to hear about your injuries. You should try and get an aqua-jogger belt — you can still jog in the pool (although it won’t be the same experience as running outdoors) but it help keep you fitness up without stressing your injured areas. http://www.aquajogger.com/index.php. Good luck with your recovery!!

  19. Your races are to many for a short career. You should try to use those race for your training runs. Try not to give 100% effort all the time.
