And the New Balance Testers Are…

Last week, I posted THIS.

A total of 438 runners participated in the running shoe survey and might I say that the results made hubby and I scratch our heads at one point or giggle in another.

Allow me to share the portion that intrigued me most:

When asked what brand of shoes you wear, these were the top 3 answers:

  • Nike – 49%
  • New Balance – 42%
  • Adidas – 34%

But, when asked “What in your opinion is the best running shoe brand?” you replied:

  • New Balance – 35%
  • Asics – 19%
  • Nike – 16%

I’m no research analyst, but I’d love to hear what YOU think could be the reason for runners using running shoes that isn’t their top choice.  (A friend said we shouldn’t discount the fact that NB shoes were being given away hence the bias despite my informing you that the survey was not commissioned by any shoe brand.)

Anyway, without further ado, the winners of the running shoe survey who will each get 1 FREE New Balance shoe to wear test (if they agree to write a review about it) are:

  1. 11th – brucemartin3
  2. 309th – etheljansamson
  3. 355th – m_janeo10

Congratulations to the lucky runners!

* I didn’t post the winners’ full email address to protect their privacy.  Winners will be notified via email.
** Winners were chosen through random.org.

  2. congratulations to the lucky runners! :) maybe price? while runners think that this brand is the best, we’d buy another one that’s cheaper. although, if we will look at the answers, most runners wear nike even if they think that the best shoes is new balance, i wonder whether these two shoes vary so much in terms of price. But generally, I think NB and ASICS are relatively more expensive. could it also be the fad? nike lunar glide has gained some popularity recently which may be the reason why runners opted to try it even if they think that another brand is better. i don’t know :) just guessing. i love surveys especially this one since it’s related to running. very interesting! :)

  5. they probably learned what the best shoe is after they have bought their pair. another possible reason is that they preferred form(fashion)over substance. :D

  7. Hi Jaymie!
Actual purchase/usage of shoes may be due to several factors like affordability – as affected by pricing, sales promos/discounts; product awareness from advertising, press releases, etc. (ex. Nike, Adidas are known to have big sales promos/events/Ads); product availability & variety of uses for other sports; or due to actual product superiority based on the runner’s experience. If New Balance is 2nd in actual rubber shoe usage per your survey & people also think it is the best running shoe brand (despite the free NB shoes you are giving to 3 lucky people!) – then this means a lot! Asics shoes are more expensive & may give the perception that it is one of the best brands.
Would be interesting to know: 1)if you can get the info on the people who had actually used both NB and Asics & voted for NB as the best brand; and 2) whether these people will actually change their votes if you were giving away free Asics shoes instead!!! :-)

  9. Haha. Very interesting survey Jaymmie! This clearly shows that even though we might know what’s better for us, human nature has a way of making us do something else! Keep up the surveys!

  11. My guess is availability. While ASICS and NB are known to make very good running shoes, it’s Nike that is widely distributed in the Phils.

Here in Cebu, ASICS is only available in 3 stores.

  14. price. :) ASICS is more expensive than adidas or nike or new balance. by far, new balance, nike and adidas shoes cost around 2k to 5k, but asics shoes costs 3k to around 7k. im surprised no one went for mizuno :( im a mizuno fan btw. 2 pairs so far, and they are great. :)

  15. i bought some of my running shoes before i was serious about running & i had no knowledge then about gait analysis, etc. so i wear them but don’t necessarily prefer them over my more recent shoe purchases.

also, i find that my feet & legs take time to adjust to some brands. but when i tried mizuno inspire, wow! i got more inspired to run :-)

  16. Jaymie,

I second the comment of Jun B. Nike and addidas are a more known brands. Some people tend to buy depending on trends and style. Im not sure but when you become a hardcore runner, you become more specific in choosing your shoes with regards to comfortability. for me ive tried 4 top running brands, NB, Nike, Asics, Mizuno. But that really doesnt matter on the brand. It all really depends on what comforts you the most. Nike is usually for narrow foot. NB usually have 2E sizes which is a lot wider than the normal D size. that’s why for me im really a NB 1224 / 1225 fan. Because a have a flat feet and a bit wider. try NB 1225. although its a little bit heavier than your Glide’s.

  18. anytime you need an alternative subscriber to write a review … but i didn’t receive the survey question so … :(
i’ll be trying out NB anyway as i’ve always used Nike’s and NB came highly recommended … much as i’d want 933s though, i’d buy 760s because i’ve tried them out and i can’t get them out of my head … :)

  22. Hi Jaymie!

I’m from Reebok. I’m wondering if you’re interested in test-riding our shoes with the new zig technology. may I know your shoe size? We have limited advanced samples with us and I’m crossing my fingers that we have your size. Please send me an email.

    Thank you.
