The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill gives its the opportunity to run and train without pain. Developed parallel to the technology used by NASA to train astronauts, the AlterG Anti-Gravity treadmill uses unweighting technology, which precisely reduces one’s weight up to 80% while walking or running with the machine.

Recognized by specialists abroad as an integral of the world’s best athletes’ training and rehabilitation, this new tool may revolutionize how Philippine athletes train – even while recovering from injuries.  In the U.S., elite distance runners Dathan Ritzenhein and Shannon Rowbury and notable sports teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Bears, LA Lakers, and Manchester United are loyal users of the treadmill and attest to the benefits.

RUNNING ON THE MOON

I had the opportunity to test the AlterG Anti-Gravity treadmill last week and I exclaimed in awe: “So, this is how it feels to run on the moon!”

Running on the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill was a unique experience.  To keep you on the ground, they first suit you up in tight bike shorts which zips unto the treadmill’s air chamber surrounding your entire lower body.  The machine first measures your body weight.  Once that’s done, you can choose at what body weight you would like to train at, from 20% to 100%, then the air chamber inflates around your lower body.  After that, you can increase the speed and incline just like any other treadmill.  You can also change the direction of the belt so that it actually moves backwards!

It took me a while to wrap my brain around the entire idea as I ran with only 30% of my body weight up to a pace of 5:30 min/km without feeling much impact on my knees or feet.  Half the time I felt like I was lightly bouncing on a trampoline without any impact on my legs. In the beginning, I started to doubt if I was even getting a good workout, but after several minutes, as I started panting and breaking a sweat, I knew that it was just as good as a regular run.

BENEFITS OF THE ALTERG ANTI-GRAVITY TREADMILL

+ Rehabilitation after surgery of the lower extremity (hip, knee, ankle,, or foot)
+ Training through an injury
+ Sport specific conditioning programs
+ Aerobic condition
+ Gait training for neurologic patients
+ Weight control and reduction
+ Strength and conditioning for older patients

TBR VERDICT

I think this is a fantastic machine, especially for runners or athletes who are injured and wish to continue training or those who want to shorten recovery time.  My only concern would be its affordability.  For 15 minutes and 30 minutes of use, the rate is P1500 and P2500, respectively.
