2 Days to Pasig Marathon

Just two more days till Pasig. As the say in the local vernacular, dalawang tulog na lang! It will be a big day for most Filipino runners, especially those who are running the full 42.195 km.

I will not join the race due to the injury. Initially, I was planning to support Annie, my running buddy who I trained with months ago for this marathon, but I decided otherwise for fear that seeing this super strong athlete suffer in the last 10km might cause me to abandon any future marathon dreams. So, as I’ve told Annie, I will be there in spirit for her and all you runners out there.

To Annie, Patrick, Taki, Baldrunner, Totoy (?) and others who are embarking on the exciting journey of this marathon, good luck! Stay strong and enjoy the ride!

Note:  I posted this on the 22nd and was surprised to find it back in my unpublished drafts.  Hmmph…It was bad enough that I couldn’t join the race and now my blog is playing tricks on me!

The Pasig Marathon is over and Annie finished strong with an unofficial time of 4:07!  Patrick and Taki, how did you do?  Read about Bald Runner’s Pasig experience here.

  1. 4:07, that’s a great time. Congrats to all the runners.

One day I’m going to do this marathon. I’ll sit in the sauna to get some heat and humidity acclimation then I’ll take advantage of the cheaper February airfares.

  2. Hi, bullrunner. My cousin and I joined the Pasig Marathon 2008.

He wanted to run this marathon again with a vengeance. He was hoping to finish it in sub 4 as compared to 6 hours last time. Unfortunately, cramps killed his hope as early as kilometer 15. Luckily, he finished before the cut-off time (5 hours). Cramps attacked me at kilometer 39. Kung kailan malapit na. That obviously shattered my hope of sub 4. Timed in at 4:24. All in all, marathon was good.

From kilometer 25 to the finish line though is a long stretch where smoke-belching vehicles of all kinds ply the route. Pollution is terrible! I think this kind of pollution shuts the lungs out as a matter of defense mechanism and thus, the delivery of oxygen to the leg muscles is precariously less. I am not a doctor but I theorize this (aside from loss of electrolytes) could be one of the reasons why runners experience cramps .

This now reminds me of the same problem (pollution) being confronted by endurance athletes participating in 2008 Olympics in China.

  3. Hi Jaymie,

The marathon was really an awesome experience. Its true what they say that finishing a marathon will change your life. I’m actually in recovery mode right now same as you. Yesterday, I could barely walk. I was literally limping yesterday.
About the result, I made an unofficial time of 4:05.

Btw, you placed a question mark on Totoy if he ran the marathon. Yes he did run. I’m not sure about his results but its probably a sub 4 hours. Do you happen to know Totoy’s cell number?

Get well soon bullrunner. I’m hoping to run with you soon this August at the Milo Marathon.

  4. Rick, it isn’t too hot at this time so you can opt to stay in the sauna for 10 minutes less than you planned :)

Atty Jon, your time was still good despite the cramps and pollution. Congratulations! Hopefully, the govt does something to solve the pollution problem before we have air like China’s. In the meantine, we should all do our part to keep the environment clean. Sounds like an infomercial eh?

Taki, congratulations! Great time for a first timer! Rest well and ice ice ice it. I’ll email you Totoy’s cell.

  6. the race is not that good compared to last year. At km 32 and up to the finish line, there are no more marshalls, food (banana),water etc (especially in legarda area). There are those who made short cuts, riding in bikes and some who exchanges their race numbers with their bystander companion (since there are no more marshalls) coz they can’t continue any longer, they just gave their race number to other who in turn finish the race for them. (very bad-that’s cheating)!. Traffic enforcers were also not present in those congested area resulting to the delay of some runners. i think the organizer, the clean and green foundation, overlooked the situation, and the race itself, although very challenging, failed the expectation of many marathoners like me…
