NY Marathon Pinoy Update From Mikey

A reader of this blog, Mikey, posted an update about fellow Filipinos (including himself) who ran New York Marathon last Sunday.  Big thank you, Mikey!  Here’s what he wrote:

Greetings from New York!

Just wanted to report to you what had just happened in Barrio Nueva Yorka.

With Paula retaining, dos Santos regaining and yes no Kenyans this time, a good number of Pinoys made walastikish sub-4 performances, Franchesca Carpo of Makati – 3:48, Leonardo de Ocampo Jr. of Muntinglupa – 3:55, Dino Paolo Pison of Bacolod – 3:40, Jon-Jon Rufino of Makati – 3:42 and Achtung, Achtung: MICHAEL MESINA – a bumubukol na 3:12 – HE IS BOSTON BOUND!

Other kabayans garnered fairly good bragging rights of overrunning the five boroughs, Roman Azanza – 4:25, Rosanna Kristine Cruz – 6:43, Ana de Ocampo – 4:16, Margarita Beatriz Locsin – 4:50, Rishi Mirani – 5:57, Gem Padilla – 5:02, Genea Padilla – 6:01 and Vicente Rufino – 7:17.

Her Royal Highness Jamby’s taray on Senadora Pia Cayetano may have been a distraction, as she finished 4:10, two minutes off her last NYC. Her ading Direk Lino Cayetano finished with a 4:38.

I had a crappy 4:22, having hit the wall at Mile 23, and literally dragged my feet around the peripheries of Central Park. No excuses though, I went to a gunfight armed with a butter knife.

This is one karera which one real runner should do before allowing themselves to die!

By the way, the digits above were made by silly Pinoys who travelled half way around the world from their respective sitios, not included are Pinoy yuez citizens, grin card holders or even TNTs.

Another tidbit from Mikey:

Of the three Carpo sisters, both Manda (3:39) and Leica (3:40) qualified for Boston. Unfortunately, Franchesca fell short by 8 minutes. Sayang!

Wooah, congratulations to all the NY Marathon runners!

To the Carpo sisters, you make us proud.  Bow bow bow!

  7. Btw, this was shown live (I assume) on Eurosport ch 81 on Destiny cable. Unfortunately, I was too sleepy to keep watching. I fell asleep every min or so while trying to keep my eyes open. Sayang, wala kasing toothpick sa bahay.

  8. Thank you for this update. It’s great to hear of so many Pinoys at the New York City Marathon! I hope you all enjoyed the race as well as the rest of your visit to New York City!!!

  10. Rick,

Mike lives in New York. Unfortunately, contrary to what the letter above says, he failed to qualify for Boston.

I spoke to him the other day, and he missed Boston qualifying by a mere minute and a half. His age bracket needed 3:10:59 and he posted a 3:12:30 if I’m not mistaken.

A real heartbreaker… but hats off to him. He did absolutely awesome! So did everyone else :)

  11. my regrets to the blunder, mea culpa, i misread mr. mesina’s age. despite that, with a 3:12, he must have been brushing his teeth with powerbar gel in lieu of colgate…

tessa valdez was seen at the expo…

  12. …and oh yes, there was a Kenyan who won the race, the presidential one – OBAMA

  14. a pinoy-new yorker, WILLIAM VETO, 46, ran a 3:12 in new york. if confirmed, this guy is going to boston. there are now 51 pinoy finishers, some may have entered as us citizens/residents, with a tour or charity group.

  15. The results have been corrected. They now include all 51 PHI entrants, including US residents.

    Congratulations to all!

  16. mikey, are you & Veto part of a running club in NYC? I’ve been playing around with the idea of a Pinoy running group/club of some sort, if there is enough interest. I really don’t know many Filipinos who run here – just 1 or 2 from the NYFlyers.

I don’t have a blog (do you?), but email info is in my website (link above). Thanks.

  17. with tbr’s permission.

j, the mikey you must be referring to may be mike mesina, who from what i had understood from ricecooker, is a resident of ny. i suggest you course your inquiry with the latter. i don’t have a clue on how to reach william veto.

from what i know is that there are a lot of pinoy runners in ny and its peripheries. i know one who lives in new jersey who has completed 11 nycs and 5 bostons, aside from 20 or more other races all over the us. he is a member of the clifton running club based in ny.

if at all, your idea sounds good, considering that the pinoys who did the last ny was watakwatak. i think the koreans and japanese have it already.

  18. hello,
this is mike. a friend of mine referred me to this blog and i was happy to see the write up abt the recently concluded NY marathon. many thanks to all for your comments, i’m sure the rest of the filipino finishers are grateful for all your well wishes.

J, to answer your question, no, i am not part of any running group as of the moment. I just run for fun and I normally run in CP by myself and to be honest, i do not follow a systematic training programme. I think forming a filipino running group is a brilliant idea. Seflishly for me, i would be forced to follow a specific programme and have a more systematic approach, which of course would always be beneficial come race day. Although i only know a handful of filipinos who share the same interest in running, there are more out if we just start looking …anyway, 2 heads are better than one so perhaps we could discuss this further and see how it goes.
