Bull Session 2: Now That’s a Run Clinic!

Like I’ve said many a times over, my dream of the perfect run clinic was one that focused on running long (not fast) and encouraged camaraderie among runners.  It should also be led by a reputable coach, not just any runner off the street, but one who is knowledgeable on proper training and highly experienced in the field.

I wouldn’t say the 2nd Bull Session held at 5 this morning was perfect, but we had a good crowd of wonderful people (almost 200 runners!), an awesome coach, a conservative and safe training program, and support from Team Secondwind.

For Bull Session 2, which is our run clinic in preparation for TBR Dream Marathon on May 22, 2010, we were scheduled for our 2 hour run today based on Coach Jim Lafferty’s Training Program which all registered participants are (or should be) following.  The program teaches us to follow a run-walk program which guides beginners into safe and slow running.

We gathered in front of R.O.X. in Bonifacio High Street.  Before the run, our race director and coach, Jim Lafferty, who most of our TBR Dream Marathoners had met for the first time gave us a short talk.  He reminded runners about the importance of running slow and discussed pre-race preparation before the big day.  Then we were off.

Our huge group ran for two hours at a good slow pace for the most part. Again, my favorite part was meeting new runners who always have their own stories to tell about their love for running.  In between stories and anecdotes, we would hear Jim yell from behind “WALK!!!” and we would all ease up to a slow walk.  After a minute, he would shout “RUN!” and we would follow.  It went on like this until we all gathered together for stretching at Bonifacio High Street.

After the clinic, over breakfast, Jim shared more tips for us to improve our Bull Sessions. I truly feel fortunate to have him as our race director because he teaches us how to provide even more guidance for our runners, especially the beginners.  More than that, I feel blessed to have found a new mentor in him, one who, in a matter of days, taught me more than a thing or two about selflessness, responsibility, and always striving to give the best.

  4. Had a great time. Thanks for organizing this one.

Medyo napasubo ako kasi this is my farthest run ever… I only had 10k runs… never expected a 15-16k run… hehe… and i’m not yet regularly training…

but it’s so fun… i’m looking forward to the next session, and the next tbr marathon. =)

  6. I love listening to Jim. While some think he’s too serious, I think it’s the other way around! He takes out the competitiveness in the sport, which is primarily the goal of this marathon, and brings back the fun in running. No matter how slow or fast you are, he has a way of making you feel good about yourself.

Makes me wish we had more coaches like him with real street cred and a positive, encouraging attitude.

  10. It was a really fun experience. best long run I ever did. It was the first time I didn’t use my ipod and it felt great to be able to listen to Jim’s marathon stories as we paced with him. It was really nice to meet fellow marathoners and chat with them thru the run. Just awesome! High five!

  12. There is no substitute for great running, coaching and leadership experience. With more than 25 marathons, several ultra-marathons, numerous track/running coaching stints and actual experience in “leading & teaching” people – Jim brings in a lot of quality, practical tips, and brings up the level of training and “running” knowledge for all the participants of the TBR Dream Marathon in NUVALI – whether new runners or experienced. Congratulations to Jim, Jaymie & the TBR Dream Team!!!

  13. Had a great time yesterday. I almost missed our run, I was just glad I was able to catch up. In that almost 2-hr run I got the chance to chat with five of my classmates (co- DMs). Jet of NAMRIA, we talked about his work of creating maps, Kuya William of P&G and his marathon experience, Kuya Nep who’s into monitoring air pollution, Ate Maria, who I will run with next week since she’s also from QC and Ate Maria, an IT expert who’s having a hard time training because she’s out of the country most of the time. Then I introduced them with each other after the photoshoot, so we all added new running buddies in our lists :) Happy! :) I ran this morning since I’m not used to not running on a Sunday, I could not resist just the thought of hundreds of runners in UP, then I met a friend from Runnex who’s training for a marathon in Singapore in May, shared with her the run we had yesterday and she liked it. She knows Coach Jim and intends to join us in the next bull session :) Thanks, Jaymie and Coach Jim! Coach was very encouraging :) Can’t wait for our next bull session! :)

  14. The training yesterday was great! We were (a bit) not prepared for the 2-hour session.

We thought that it will be like the 1st session (that there will be a break). We didn’t bring our hydration gear. =(

But hey, we survived 2 hours of running without our hydration! (but definitely this is not recommended!)

  20. Jaymie, 8 min/km is slow for you, but not to most of us. I’m quite surprised I survived the 15km at that pace. Sure, I already finished two 21k races but at 8:20 pace. I have to thank Bob of Second Wind who patiently ran with me to catch up with you guys. At 5:20 AM, you were already gone! Bob joined me at Lawton Ave. and by 6:20 AM, I just found myself running right behind Coach Jim! Too bad I couldn’t keep the pace in going back to ROX. You were already doing your stretching exercises when Anna and I arrived. Hopefully next time, I can start the run with the group. Sprinting at the start instead of warming up was too exhausting for my (old) body.
