Mizuno Infinity Run – Part 2

Last night, I checked this blog to find quite a number of negative comments regarding the organization of the Mizuno race—from registration to the lack of water stations—and with a range of emotions from simply disappointed to infuriated.

Personally, I was oblivious to the water problem as I didn’t feel the need to stop at any water station during my 5k run. However, I did encounter these:

CONS:
1. difficulty registering my husband for the 5k run
2. no pins for my hubby’s race bib
3. more than usual vehicles on the road due to late race time of 6:30am

In fairness, there were good things too…

    PROS:
    1. 5k race was 5.07km on my Garmin. They finally got it right this time—not perfect but close enough right?
    2. nice singlet for men…but no sizes and too transparent for us women :(
    3. 5k started on time
    4. They make the best shoes and leggings…oh right, that’s not about the race

It was obvious to me that Mizuno and the race organizer worked hard to make this race as successful as it could be. But, obviously, a lot of things went wrong.

This was Mizuno’s first race and it can only get better next time. Hopefully, all race organizers learn from this experience to give us runners a race that is well-organized—or better yet, one that is at par with races abroad. Sigh.

What did YOU think about the Mizuno Infinity Run?

    2. I did not join the race so i think it would be unfair for me to comment. I wont get into the details anymore on the disaster of the race cause a lot has already been said in all the yahoogroups.
It’s important that instead of lambasting and crucifying a race we should show support so that they can improve.
I’ve been running for 28 years and I remember during the 80’s we had only 2 or 3 races a year. Now we have races almost every sunday. That’s why it’s important to encourage rather than discourage.

    3. Pros:
      1. New PR (It must be the new asics ds racer VII 08-hehehe),
      2. Ran without my ipod shuffle and pmx70 thus being able to concentrate on just running.
      3. Weather was cool compared to yesterday when I paddled along Roxas blvd from 1 to 2:30p.
      4. Wife went with me to a running event for the first time.
      4. Met Bull Runner and Bald Runner in person.
      5. Receiving the One Bracelet from Bald Runner as handed out by Capt. Espejo

Cons: None … biro lang. Here’s the list
      1. Limited towel – Yes they gave some out at the cemetery
      2. No water (they gave out rush)
      3. Rush ran out,
      4. No water at the finishing line instead Mcdo outlet sold 500ml water for 25 pesos.
      5. Late start time for 15km
      6. Lack of marshalls at some turns. I believe some got lost
      7. Course was 300 meters short of 15km.
      8. Wife was not able to catch my pic at the finish line. She crossed to the other side when we saw each other. To her surprise, she shrieked and eventually snapped a pic of my back. Ayos!

    4. surprisingly i had fun! my first official 5k run and i finished it with no stops. i’m on a high:)

i just wish the organizers did a much better job though. 2 major points – the reg process and the water supply. the reg process was more arduous than running those hills and i couldn’t believe they ran out of water for the 5k runners (or maybe even before??). did a bulk of the runners register on the day itself that they simply did not anticipate the number of participants?

even then, they were distributing them in little ‘sample size’ cups. you know, the ones promo girls give out in malls and expos. little trial cups. cute, but for runners? can’t help but think na tinipid tayo nung sponsor.

i ignored the smaller details like the lack of pins since i just recycled the old ones from previous races. and i just made my brother happy by giving him the huge shirt i got.

hopefully they do a better job next time. nagbayad naman tayo ng maayos. and it is organized by mizuno after all.

    5. i agree, dong!

like what i said, i had fun with you guys and my friends and my brother, too. but… a badly-organized race is still a badly-organized one

    6. Now I am disappointed to find out the race was 300 meters short. I actually thought I had improved a lot when in fact ran the race just a shade below my target pace.

Aside from finding out the race was a bit short, I have no major complaints. In the 80′s some of the races were not really well organized and you would be lucky if they had one water stop.

My only advice to new organizers is to start with a small race with only one distance. If they did a 5k only it would have been much simpler.

    7. the mizuno run was one good experience! not great, but still good…
i agree with all the complaints i’ve read so far, but i still think mizuno did a relatively good job in organizing this race. and with all the complaints they’ve been getting (i’m sure they read your blog :) ), i’m already getting excited for the next race they’ll have, since i’m sure they’ll try to make it much better than this one…

congratulations on your pain-free run! keep on running!

    8. it seems that with a number of races now sprouting almost every weekend the least organizers can do is do it right and as efficient, like, say milo, adidas or all the global city runs…but a first time is a first time…

teka bakit ako nag-cocomment di naman ako nakatakbo?

    9. Dong, glad you “survived” :)

Patrick, I agree. I was careful not to complain or point any fingers here. I can only imagine how difficult it is to organize a “perfect” race. It’s all about improving future races.

Markfb, glad to have finally met you, your wife and Charlie. Congrats with the PR! The Bald Runner and your not-so-secret goal must’ve kept you on your toes haha. Hope to see you at the next races. Looks like your wife will have to come with you again next time to take your photo!

Newbie, glad you enjoyed your first race! I’m sure mizuno will do better next time :)

Marga, as long as we enjoyed eh?!

      Mark, aren’t you injured?!!

    10. I hope all the runners managed to finish free from injuries due to dehydration or heat exhaustion.

I have been trying to resist commenting for fear that all the negative thoughts I had–due to my dried out brain from yesterday’s run–might be unfair. Oh well, I tried.

I suppose we ought to laud Mizuno for trying. Thank you to all the people who worked to bring us this event. Most of the good and the bad have been mentioned, I just have this to say, the water situation was a serious lapse.

The hardiest and the greenest of today’s runners can agree that it is a basic expectation from an event like this. Much as I’d like to tough it out, I’d rather not run in searing heat without some promise of a drink of potable water. There’s a lot of negative feedback regarding the event now but if all the runners managed to finish unhurt, the organizers should be thankful.

The really frustrating thing about yesterday’s water shortage was the organizer’s lack of response. It’s bad enough that they were ill prepared (I overheard someone who appeared to be from the organizer’s end chatting/apologizing to a finisher, putting the blame on the company that sponsored the drinks) but their unwillingness to do something to alleviate the situation was inexcusable. They knew the water supply was running out, that stations were completely dry, but all they did was send this poor soul–if you’re reading this, I’m sorry I snapped at you–to tell the stragglers “sorry, there’s no water.” While he was riding up and down McKinley hill on his scooter to spread the news, he could have brought water from a convenience store or the McDonald’s outlet to re-supply even the nearest aid station. It was much later when he rode down again to inform the others that “there’s a hose at the top of the hill” or that runners can drink in McDonald’s. The young marshal in McKinley hill, bless his kind heart, offered me his juice pack–I suppose he felt bad, I’m sure I was the nth person to ask if there was water anywhere, and also, he might have pitied my slo-mo “run” :) as I was practically going on fumes–which I thankfully declined.

Whatever the excuses are, I just hope that future events learn from the Mizuno Infinity Run. I’m sure all runners appreciate the extra stuff, we love the swag at the end of the race but please, take care of the important stuff first.

    11. Pros:
      1. Challenging route for me..lots of uphills..which I like..:)..my first 15K (or 13K so they say) run . Rock en Roll Papi!
      2. Very nice finisher shirt..:) Rock en Roll Papi!
      3. Im sure to have burned lots of my juicy fat during that run. On my way to mah dream body! Rock en Roll Papi!

      Cons:
      1. Lots of beautiful women…I get distracted easily & tend to lose focus..:(
      2. Water Shortage…ampucha dumampot nako isang tipak na yelo dun sa may last water station…while running I’d bite-off a small chunk of ice just to at least quench my huge thirst even just a little. Biruin mo..may hawak nako tubig pero di ko mainum?! Galing naman davah?! Parang bang holy week rewind…runners doing their penance.

    12. I think it would be better if Mizuno take a different organizer next run! I think they took one that cannot handle such a small crowd for a marathon. But the run was cool! I got to see Pia Cayetano at last! :)

Water! we’re not asking much just a sip or two.

You have results of yesterdays run? What’s for next Sunday?
      Thanks!

    13. Its not 13km, its 14.7. Discrepancies like 300 meters depends on what line you took during the race. They should follow a standard on how to properly measure the race course. I read some info on that in runners world.

    14. Less than a year and around 4 events, and each one a unique experience. And in that short period these are the things I’ve learned…

      1) Enjoy the run.
      2) BE OR BRING your own support team.
      3) Enjoy the run.
      4) THANK the organizers for the venue to push oneself.
      5) Enjoy the run.
      6) EXPECT and ADJUST to each race.
      7) Enjoy the run.

The Perfect Race … It’s how you ran the race and not how the race was ran.

See ya all in the next event.

    15. yes, it’s the fun that matters the most to me. the dehydration can go away, but seeing my friends abby, jed, and jenna cross the finish line is priceless to me. :) i felt like such a proud mom.

    16. Where was the water? I truly enjoyed both dodging jeepneys AND motorcycles. And the jeepney exhaust cocktail gave me the extra energy to go go go.

That said, the course was nice, beautiful (well, not beautiful, but ok) run by the Phil Army and cemetery, and GREAT shirts.

One more complaint: only one water distribution station after the finish???? So you’re telling me that after an hour in the hot sun with no water stations along the course I then have to wait in a single line for 20+ minutes to get some water? You gotta be kidding me.

I’ve run races in over 10 countries, and considering the lack of water and poor traffic control, this was by far the worst organization I’ve ever seen.

    17. MIZUNO should take the irate runners’ complaints like a man.

Being a sports company, it has no excuse why the race went so wrong. All it has to do is to replicate some of the successful races held religiously year after year after year. It is not as if there were no models to follow.

The lack or depletion of water during the race especially on the way back to the finish line is a sin to us runners and bluntly, quite dangerous. Mizuno should be glad that the weather was a bit good. Otherwise, there could have been some injured and worst, casualties like what happened in the recent Chicago marathon. Moreover, how could we encourage new runners to enjoy and pursue the sports if races they joined for the first time did not leave up to their minimum expectations?

Holding races for the sake of holding one is quite frankly irresponsible.

    18. it was the first time i joined a 15k and i was disappointed.they ran out of water on the 2nd water stop inside the heritage cemetery.it was struggle all the way! they gave dirty cold water for “buhos” and it was a good thing i got a bottle because i saw a guy who was watering the plants and filled my bottle with nawasa! it was either nawasa or collapse due to dehydration for the rest of the race.it was badly organized.aside from not having enough water, they did not have enough people around the route.what if someone collapsed? we all thought we’d be rewarded with water when we reached the finished line, but sadly there was none.there was mineral water nearby, but no cup,no water.

    19. aside from the lack of water and the unusual number of cars on the road, i think there was also cheating.. this may be a harsh comment but i personally witnessed it. i hope i’m wrong but i don’t think so. i ran the 10K and on my way to the 10K turnaround along bayani road, probably around 1K before the turnaround, i saw this guy who was handing out the ropes (not sure if that is the right term) give two person ropes even before they reached the 10K turnaround point. there was not a lot of people around since i was one of the last to leave the starting point so when i reached halfway most are on their way back. anyway, when the guy who was handing out the ropes saw me, he just smiled as if nothing happened. not sure if Mizuno organizers know about it, probably not. This is the first time i saw this happen.

    20. What? Pati ba naman sa mga races na ganito, may dayaan… :(

Actually, the only people they’re cheating are themselves… they have a fake time and deep down inside, they can’t say that they ran a 5k, 10k or a 15k race…

Actually, sila din lugi dyan… It’s not as if people outside of the top 10 or 20 really care what place they finish… I mean, in running, its more about setting and beating personal records.

    22. For Mizuno even if it is their first run, there shouldn’t be any excuse to their shortcomings as they even have their own Running Club at fort every other week so they should know basic requirements in doing a race. Also, it’s a 15k run they put in, longer than the usual 5k and 10k runs here plus the fact that it’s already summer means runners will be more dehydrated than usual. Quite disappointing in this. They even gave away free stuffs in their “bring me” games like shoe bags, etc which meant they could have enough cash to buy water for the runners still stuck at the course. Heard from the 5Ks runners that they didn’t even get a sip of water and from the 10Ks runners, they were only able to get water at first water station only! So if they skipped that one out, they had to run all the way to the finish line to get water (at a price of P25). haha! Good thing I always put water container in my car so have some place to go to for free water. Really hope they improve on this going forward. Positive note: i love the shirt they gave. Probably best one because of material used. With the “Run 100%” comment at back, it is hard not to add “Drink 0- 10%” underneath it. haha :)
