Philippine Marathon Postponed to November?

Word is going around that the much-awaited Philippine Marathon targeted for March 8 will be postponed to November.  No confirmation yet from the organizers but the source is pretty credible.

The news has left many Pinoy runners in confusion and frustration.  Quite a large number of runners have raked in the miles feeling ready for the ultimate performance on March 8.  Suddenly, there’s no goal to work for.

With the postponement of the only scheduled local marathon for the 1st half of the year, what’s a Pinoy runner to do?  Here are my suggestions:

  1. Run Hong Kong, Feb 8.  There’s onsite registration for foreigners.  Read Ronnie’s comment here.
  2. Run Sundown in Singapore, May 30.
  3. Run Phuket, June 14.
  4. Focus training for a strong Condura Skyway Half Marathon while deciding on the next marathon goal.
  5. Continue to build mileage with 4Q 2009 Marathon in mind: QC in Oct, Phil. Marathon in Nov., or Clark in Dec.  Click here for race scheds.

  1. hi, i think this is also an option: =)

Hi Wilson, thanks for this! It definitely is an option for some pinoys. I wonder when they’ll have a Standard Chartered Philippine Marathon…

  2. Wow, this is discouraging. I was seriously thinking of doing that marathon.

Yes, you can run in HK this Feb. 8.

I know you can do onsite registration a day or two before the race for overseas runners – even if the press release on the website is that registration is closed. Since I was an overseas runner, I was able to register and pay last year for the 21K at the race pack collection 2 days before the race. So, the same case applies to the 42K this Feb.

But still, this rumor is depressing. We’re forced to run elsewhere, abroad, which is not a cheap option. Maybe all the telcos in our country should band together and sponsor a major Philippine International Marathon? =)

So are you running HK this year, Wency?

I think the corporate bigwigs should band together and support one major marathon. One that we can be proud of. One that will entice even tourists to fly in for the race. Hay someday

  3. hi jaymie,

please allow me to invite my fellow brokenhearted runners to join me on march 8 for a fun 42 runabout.i will post the route and details as soon as we finalize it.i feel the same way as all runners gearing up for the supposed march full.so i will just vent all my frustrations at the designated pitstops during the march 8 fun 42.thank you.

Great idea jonel. Please inform me when you’ve finalized details so I can post it here :)

  4. Uy blessing in disguise yan. All of us will have more time to train and establish better PRs for our 42ks! :)

Blessing in disguise for those of us who were injured or unprepared. Can’t say the same for those who were ready to race…kawawa naman.

  6. So Jaymie, where will you be? Hongkong, Singapore or Phuket?

Nora, I’ll be in Manila working hard to pay for Singapore last year. Hahahaha.

  7. I am a member of the stirring committee of the Phil Marathon ( but haven’t attend any meeting yet ) He he.
I was able to confirm with 2 of the members of the said committee that the Phil Marathon was cancelled and moved to Nov or Dec.
The Organizer will still make an Official announcement but in one way the Organizer doesn’t have to make an announcement because “OFFICIALLY “ they did not say that they will take over the Phil marathon also. To my understand the Phil Marathon will be like a relay race instead having 10 to 42 members per team. Again these are all plans but nothing final yet. What frustrating is, I like many of the other runners were already training for the Phil Marathon only to be disappointed on the cancelation news. To train for a marathon you don’t only have to be physically prepared but most of all “ MENTALLY”. A Marathon is a “head game” if you want to do well and finish the race. I guess we have to move on and plan for another Marathon schedule. Maybe the Q.C. marathon on Oct. will be the best.

Thanks for the info pat. Relay race? 42 people would mean 1km per head? Eeek. I hope they don’t implement this in October. Even if they allow for individuals to run the full length, I can already imagine how messy the relay race can be.

  9. I have said it before and I will say it again, we need to establish an organization composed mostly of runners and atheletes dedicated to holding one major marathon yearly and other races in our country.

    Sponsors will follow.

    Agree!

  11. Next year, this is bound to happen again. A classic case of history repeating itself unless we do something about it.

Right now, marathons are cramming during the last quarter of 2009. Oh well.

Tara…let’s do something about it. What’s your plan?

  12. if they are going to turn it into a relay race then they better not call it Philippine International Marathon.

Let’s all pray they don’t turn it into a relay race.

  14. always postponed, cancelled wasting our time to train , mahirap na nagyon kaya wala ng mag spnsor global crisis na ito; kaya hindi nalnag pira dpat ang prices items nalang kay s apira tapos nawala na ang marathon kasi nahirapan na ang mga organizer at sponsor sana baguhin na ang apraan kahit hindi malki pira prices item nalang.. r products nalang.. at kunting pira.

goblatz ang show ngayun labo na tayo…. sg for health nalang wala ng pira isipin nalang na para sa katawan at hindi na pangkabuhayan ang takbuhan hahhhaahahha… for fun… mga athlete na have a break na tayo hanap nalang ng trabaho..

  15. On one hand, its a welcome relief since i got sidetracked with sickness thats why I wasnt able to train. On the other hand, I have more than enough time to train for succeeding races.

  16. hmmm … it’s been a year of running (for me) and it seems like the stable and consistent races (10Km up) in my list are …

    1) Adidas KOR
    2) Milo Marathon
    3) New Balance PowerRace.

Instead of reinventing the wheel, why not just fully support (runners) these events and sponsors who have delivered quality events to the running community. Set aside and de-prioritize the other events (come and go types) as just casual runs.

If I may, TBRs race rating should also be supported and continued to serve as a way of sorting out the quality races from the rest of the so so events.

Is there a local governing body for marathons like ITU is for Triathlon? If so then maybe they should regulate and endorse these events so as to elevate and maintain local marathons to a respectable international level.

    IMHO

To the next quality race!!! :D

  17. uhhh…and in case there’s some violent reaction…

… there’s nothing wrong with re-scheduling or cancelling an event, I’m sure there’s a reason for doing so, BUT! there should be some accountability both from the organizer & participant – always.
    :D peace!

  18. Yeah bugobugo is right, lets make our own 42kms on March 8,that’s a better idea…or try bataan 102 kms ultramarathon or tnf 102 ultramarathon this May!
With that, I suppose we will not crave for anymore runs hehehe

  19. I hope that in the near future, a world class Marathon is staged in the Philippines, where we can attract runners from around the world, and showcase the beauty of our people, culture, and natural wonders ( specially our white sand beaches – which are the most pristine and beautiful in the world, if only we could develop them properly).

This will also give our marathon runners the chance to be exposed to world class marathon running in our own soil.

  22. Hi there, the Philippine International Marathon will push through on Nov. 8!!! Yey! Shotgun at the Quirino Grandstand…..Izod is a major sponsor and will be providing the Singlets for the race. The marathon will take you through 13 bridges along Pasig River. See you all there!

By the way, from a credible source, the Php250 registration fee ALL goes to the Pasig River clean up project.
