Another Attack

Wednesday, 5 January 2011  |  Bullish Insights

This was a post written last June 18, 2009…

I thought I was giving birth yesterday. From 6am to 12nn, I was suffering from extreme stomach pain accompanied by high fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. The hubby took the kids to school, but I called him a little before lunch begging him to take me to the E.R. I didn’t know how much longer I could endure the pain.  By the time he got home, I was in fetal position and could barely move. It took me a full 30 minutes to get dressed.

It might as well could’ve been written today.  I had another gastroenteritis attack yesterday.  Just like that time in June 2009 and in January 2010 after Cebu Marathon.  The scenario was exactly the same.  The pain just as hellish.  It’s the kind of pain that I hate remembering and pray to God I won’t have to undergo again.

At the moment, I’m still feeling awfully weak. My blood pressure yesterday was 100/70.  I feel like I’ve just run 3 consecutive marathons, that’s how tired I am.  There will be no runs this week and just a whole lot of sleeping (and a bit of working…ack!)

Sick of Being Sick

Sunday, 25 July 2010  |  Bullish Insights

Talk about perfect timing. I had fever a few days ago and I’ve been coughing endlessly (and loudly) all week. With the nebulizer in my mouth last night, I easily computed the amount of hours I worked out all week: ZERO.

To think I was overly thrilled about NYC Marathon Training starting this week.

To think Secondwind‘s Boy’s vs Girl’s Challenge kicked off last Monday, too. (This is a distance challenge initiated by Secondwind Running store where 10 girls, including myself, will win compete against 10 boys, for the longest distance run in a specific period of time. These poor boys don’t know what they are up against, I tell you.)

To think bestest running buddy, Annie, arrived from Singapore last Friday. Since last week, we had planned on running to our hearts content together. I’ve missed her terribly and I’m hoping we can cover our favorite course tomorrow, just as we always did before.

There’s only one B word to express my feelings right now: Bummed.

Okay, maybe another one: Bitin.

Cough, Cough Away

Friday, 23 April 2010  |  Bullish Insights

So my son’s cough and cold virus has attacked me too.

WEDNESDAY:

Two days ago, I woke up with an itchy throat. My solution? An early morning 10k run at 5:50 min/km pace.

I felt great when I got home, but by afternoon, the cough had worsened. And, worse, my nose was congested.

THURSDAY:

I had a morning appointment with my trainer for strength training at the gym.  I peeled myself off the bed, added two packs of tissue in my gym bag, and crawled my way up to the 2nd floor of the gym.  I attempted to finish 10 minutes of my warm up on the elliptical only to have my gym trainer send me home.  “Get out of here and get some rest” he said warmly, then he said “baka mahawa din kasi ako sa yo eh!” with a laugh.

I thought it best to stay home and avoid spreading this nasty virus.  But, I had hopes that it would be gone by noon time.

Coach Jim’s wife, Susan, had invited me for a run the following day, and I confirmed with her optimistic that I would be back in the pink of health by this morning.

FRIDAY (TODAY):

Nope, my combination of prayers, OJ, and double dose of vitamin C wasn’t enough to scare the cough and colds away.  I had to pass on the morning run with Susan or any other form of exercise today.  Thus, my eyebrows are glued together and I haven’t even smiled since I got out of bed.

By tomorrow, I expect to be back in fighting form for Greenfield Sunset Run. Hopefully by then, I can greet you with a smile.  Sniff sniff. Cough cough.

On Sick Leave

Thursday, 18 June 2009  |  Bullish Insights

I thought I was giving birth yesterday.  From 6am to 12nn, I was suffering from extreme stomach pain accompanied by high fever, vomiting, and diarrhea.  The hubby took the kids to school, but I called him a little before lunch begging him to take me to the E.R. I didn’t know how much longer I could endure the pain.

By the time he got home, I was in fetal position and could barely move.  It took me a full 30 minutes to get dressed.  The only time I managed to smile was when the hubby tried to carry me out of the bed and down the stairs.  He almost broke his back and dropped me back onto the bed.  I literally crawled down our stairs and slithered like a snake towards our garage door.

I was wheeled into the emergency room of Asian and brought directly to the patient’s rooms.  There, the doctor checked me and declared that I suffered from gastroenteritis which triggered a severe case of hyperacidity.  He asked me to stick my tongue out and discovered that I was already dehydrated.  After a stool exam, it was discovered I had slight amoebiasis too. (A friend says the latter may have been from the green water at DLSZ pool…kidding!)

They fed me medicine via IV and tablets as well.  I fell asleep for a couple of hours while the hubby waited patiently by my side.  When I awoke, the pain had subsided.  Thank God!

The doctor ordered me to drink a lot of Gatorade (which I fortunately have tons of at home) and continue taking paracetamol and other medicines.  For now, I’m on rest mode.  All the work (which are plenty, I tell you) will have to wait while I recover and regain my strength.

No running nor gym training for now.  I’ll probably sleep in on Sunday and pass on Men’s Health too.  Rest and recovery are top priority for the next few days.

Sick Leave

Tuesday, 20 January 2009  |  Therapy + Injury

Just when I thought I could start training again, I was struck by a slight fever, achy bones, and a tummy ache yesterday.  I spent the entire day in bed consumed by an overall feeling of blahness, thinking about 1) the near perfect weather for swimming, 2) missed gym visit that day, 3) downgrading my 15k Happy Run registration to a 5k (arggh, I hate the idea, but I think a sick, recently-injured runner like me has got to bite the bullet and accept her sad fate), and last but not the least, 4) how Rustom (or Bebe Gandanghari) was able to gain his/her new waif-like figure in three months time through Pilates!

Yes, I know, I had too much idle time on my hands yesterday.  Thanks to Tylenol, I’m feeling much better now.  Today is still rest/ recovery day.  Hopefully, I’m strong enough for a short run and yoga tomorrow.
