Today is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life

Monday, 17 October 2011  |  Bullish Insights

October 17 is DAY ONE of the 22-week TBR Dream Marathon Training Program.  For all 600 of our TBR Dream Marathoners, this could very well be the first day of the rest of your life.  You turn a new leaf.  You embrace new challenges that will make you a better, stronger you.  And, last but not the least, you take that first step towards achieving your marathon dream!  (Yeah!  Wasn’t that an Oprah moment?)

TrainingProgram
– You should have reviewed this TBR Dream Training Program included in your registration kit. Better yet, you should have made copies and posted them all over the house and at your office! –

Remember: we won’t run all your training runs together.  That is YOUR homework.  We expect full commitment and dedication from you.  We will, however, be together twice a month for our Bull Sessions and Bull Circles.

BULL SESSION 1: OCTOBER 22, 2011

Our first Bull Session is this coming Saturday, 22 October 2011, in front of Krispy Kreme in Bonifacio High Street.  Our head coach for all our Bull Sessions will be Coach Lit Onrubia, certified Chi Running Instructor, together with Edward Kho who will assist us.  This will follow our training program which requires a long walk of 45 minutes.

Date: Saturday, October 22, 2011
Assembly time: 5:30 AM
Start at 6:00 AM
Venue: in front of Krispy Kreme, Bonifacio High Street
Programme: Short talk on Chi Walking followed by long walk of 45 mins. Those who want to run may do so.
Why should you attend?

  • If you are a new runner, start with walking to gradually introduce your body to running
  • If you are a runner who plans to use the RUN-WALK sequence in long runs/marathons which we recommend and we’ll apply in all our long runs, this talk will teach you how to walk efficiently with less fatigue
  • If you signed up for TBR Dream 2012, just show up to meet your batchmates!  It’s going to be fun!

TBR DREAM E-NEWSLETTER

We just finalized all 600 runners last week.  This week, we shall be sending out emails inviting you to join the TBR Dream E-group.  Please accept the invite to stay updated on our upcoming events.  This will be the primary way we’ll be getting in touch with you.

We will be sending via this email group the benefits of the TBR Dream Card which you received during registration.

TBR DREAM FACEBOOK GROUP

Within the next couple of weeks, you’ll be receiving invites to join the TBR DM FB group.  Please accept this as well.  This is an exclusive group for TBR Dream Alumni and current runners.

That’s it for now!  Remember: do your homework runs and we’ll see you on Saturday!  I shall leave you with more Oprah-ish quotes to start your training week right: Live your best life NOW!

TBR Dream Marathoner Bea Azcuna on Women’s Health Sep 2011

Monday, 26 September 2011  |  Bullish Insights

I first met Bea Azcuna in TBR Dream Marathon 2010.  She volunteered to pace her sister, Rina Siongco, who had signed up for the marathon.  By the second TBR Dream, as what I’ve observed with anyone who witnesses the magic at a TBR Dream, Bea had returned as a participant.

I would see Bea on the road training for TBR Dream.  And, she was present at most of our Bull Sessions.  It was evident that she was committed to finishing her first marathon not just with a strong body but, as you’ll notice with Bea, her cheerful disposition.

There’s an inspiring article on Bea Azcuna and her story training and finishing TBR Dream Marathon 2011 in Women’s Health – September 2011 issue with Lovi Poe on the cover.  Get your copies now!

Thanks to Lara Parpan and the Summit staff and, of course, to Bea Azcuna who I continue to see running on the roads aiming for bigger dreams!

Do You Want to Become a Marathoner? 15 Reasons Why You Should Join TBR Dream Marathon 2012

Monday, 19 September 2011  |  Race Announcements

QCIM
– My first unofficial marathon QC International Marathon 2009 –

When I crossed the finish line of my first marathon in 2009, I was changed forever. Completing a 42k, a distance that once seemed impossible, taught me that anything in this world was within my grasp as long as I worked for it. I was so overwhelmed with the experience that I felt compelled to invite anyone and everyone to run a marathon too. If I could do it, so could they. After meeting with Coach Jim Lafferty, we decided to create a marathon for beginners taking them by the hand and guiding them from day one of training until they crossed the finish line of their first 42k. That’s how The Bull Runner Dream Marathon was born.

Now on its 3rd year, The Bull Runner Dream Marathon has become more than I could ever dream of. It’s the first and only marathon exclusively for beginners in the entire world. It’s received a lot of positive feedback from runners and sponsors alike, more than we could have ever imagined. It has encouraged and promoted the idea of “paying it forward” where more experienced, selfless “Dream Chasers” and volunteers give back to beginner runners who need support and guidance. And, most importantly, it has changed the life of every single person who crossed the finish line of our race. Just like the way it changed mine.

TBR Dream Marathon is my baby, my pet project. It’s my way of making a positive contribution to this world. It’s personal for me and we make it personal for you, too. TBR Dream is not just any race; it’s a life experience we wish to share with you.

Together with TBR Dream Team—Coach Jim Lafferty, Neville Manaois, Lit Onrubia, Jun Cruz, Edward Kho, Macel Janeo, and Miguel Pizarro—we invite you to be a part of TBR Dream Marathon 2012.

Here are 15 reasons why we think you should go for your first marathon with us:

1. MADE FOR FIRST-TIME MARATHONERS. We have 500 slots reserved for runners attempting to complete their first or second marathon. This race was made for the beginner from day one of training in October 2011 to full support on race day in March 2012. Race cut-off is 8 hours. No prizes will be given to top finishers because “At TBR Dream Marathon, everyone who crosses the finish line is a winner.”

2. TRAINING PROGRAM BY COACH JIM LAFFERTY. To help you train properly, you will receive a 22-week Training Program developed by Coach Jim Lafferty, retired P&G General Manager, finisher of 23 marathons, coach of multiple US national team members, and TBR Dream Marathon’s principal coach.  Should you have any questions, he is just an email away.

– Our head coach, Jim Lafferty –

3. BULL SESSIONS (LONG RUNS). While most of the runs will be done on your own, once a month all participants will be invited to a Bull Session: long group runs together led by Head Coach and Chi Running instructor, Lit Onrubia, and supported by Team Secondwind. We run using the run-walk technique and you will be divided into groups so you can go at your own pace with fellow TBR Dreamers.  Your longest run in February will be done on the actual course in NUVALI, almost like a rehearsal for the race. By the time marathon day comes, most runners along the course will be familiar faces—or better yet, good friends!

NUVALI
– Bull Session at NUVALI for TBR Dream 2010 Batch –

4. BULL CIRCLE (TALKS). Once a month, you will be invited to talks by running experts specifically chosen by TBR because of their knowledge and competency in a particular field.

5. PERSONAL AND INTIMATE MARATHON EXPERIENCE. Due to the small number of participants, we can and will treat each one of you as if you were the only runner in the marathon. We will provide more than enough water, sports drinks, fruits, chocolates, sponges, and ice. Even our marshals and volunteers will treat you like friends.

6. SAFE & SCENIC ROUTE. Our course is in NUVALI, the new prestigious 1,700 hectare development of Ayala Land south of Manila. You can enjoy the fresh air as you run on a course with limited vehicular traffic. You’ll marvel at the scenic views of Mt. Makiling, Laguna de Bay, and Tagaytay Ridge during the marathon.

7. “DREAM CHASERS.” Experienced marathoners and volunteers (mostly TBR Dream alumni)—handpicked and screened by the race organizers—will be on standby at four Dream Chaser tents along the race course.  At any time a runner requests for help, the “Dream Chaser” will happily run a few kilometers with the marathoner to provide hydration, gels, food, or even silly jokes.  Last race they provided masseuses!

8. CHEERING ZONES. Solenad, a cluster of restaurants within Nuvali, will be designated as a cheering zone.  The route will have runners run through the Solenad dining area twice.  Family and friends can give you a hug, take your pic, and cheer wildly for you.  Surely the best way to reenergize when the going gets tough!

9. DREAM MOBILE. One bus will travel along the route during the race.  Family and friends of runners can hop on the bus (with their banners, flags, and bells in hand) to cheer for their runner when they spot them along the route.

10. SECOND WIND ZONE. The last few kilometers is the hardest portion of any marathon. At this point, Team Secondwind will provide free hydration, food and of course, support to make the toughest part of the race a little bit easier and give runners their second wind as they run towards the finish line. Oh, we’re pretty sure they can make you laugh too no matter how exhausted you are.

11. FAMILY ACTIVITIES. While they wait for the runners, families and friends can dine at Solenad, a row of restaurants with Starbucks, Italianni’s, Conti’s, and Yellow Cab, that will be open for breakfast. They can opt to bring food and have a picnic or rent bikes.  Kids will get a thrill from feeding over 800 koi fish or ride boats on the lake.

12. ENTERTAINMENT. We’ll have music blasting and even a band playing along the route to keep you entertained and energized.

13. PERKS & FREEBIES. You don’t just get what you pay for, but you get MORE. You get two shirts: 1 TBR Dreamer shirt and 1 finisher’s shirt. You get automatic inclusion into TBR Dream Marathon e-Newsletter for updates on our group activities and inclusion into TBR Dream Marathon Facebook Group, discounts from our sponsors, PDF souvenir program, and goodies from sponsors that should make your registration fee worth every cent. Oh, you also get a chance to join our free TBR DM Weight Management Program led by Armand and Mitch Mendoza (limited slots only).

TBRDreamMarathon11-8889

14. SEND OFF PARTY. A week before the race, we will all gather for some food, raffle prizes, pre-race briefings, and a whole lot of laughter and chatter for a TBR Dream Send Off Party that we’ll prepare for you. This is where you’ll also claim your race kit.

15. HELP ORPHANED CHILDREN. Part of race proceeds will go to HERO (Help Educate and Rear Orphans) Foundation.  HERO foundation provides educational stipend support to children of soldiers who are killed-in-action or are permanently incapacitated in battle defending our democracy and preserving peace and order. Learn more about it HERE.

FAQ:

  1. I never ran a day in my life, can I sign up for TBR Dream Marathon? Yes. Our 22-week program is beginner friendly. We start with 2 weeks of walking to gradually introduce running. The rest of the program is based on a run-walk program to be used during training.  We encourage running at a conservative pace. Having said that, we still would prefer that you don’t rush into your first marathon. You can run shorter distances this year and join our next TBR Dreams.
  2. Do we run together during the entire 22-weeks leading up to the marathon? No. We will meet once a month for the next 6 months for our Bull Sessions where we will run together. For other training days, we expect you to do your homework on your own. While this is a beginners’ marathon, we will not baby you. We do commit to guide you and provide all the support you need to make this one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
  3. How do we know we are training properly? We have gathered the best experts in the field to give you much needed information on training for the marathon during our Bull Circles, free running talks covering topics that will prepare you for the marathon. TBR Dream Team will also be there for you.
  4. I’m from the province, can I join? Yes. If you manage to reserve a slot, please email us details regarding your situation. We will allow you to send your payment and forms as long as you can make it to race day.
  5. I signed up for a 42k before but did not finish it, can I still join? Yes. As long as you never crossed the finish line of a 42km, then you may join.
  6. I finished two marathon already, but I want to join your race. Can I still join? No. The race is exclusively for first- and second-time marathoners. We encourage you, however, to volunteer as a Dream Chaser, pacer, or cheerer. This is your chance to pay it forward to other runners. Registration for Dream Chasers and volunteers will be announced here soon.

Goosebumps

Friday, 26 August 2011  |  Bullish Insights

I’ve been getting chills on and off for the past few days this week.  Every day I don’t quite feel 100% fine hence just 7k total mileage the past days and zero gym or swimming. Every evening, as we get into bed, I show the kids the goosebumps on my arms and beg them to turn the air conditioning down but they giggle and grin and head off to lala land while I freeze and sneeze and toss and turn with this cold that never really comes.  No surprise, I guess. They’re little bull runners, after all!

My plan is to completely disregard this cold-that-never-comes and run my long run tomorrow.  Sunday, I’ll go for a 5k recovery run at Earth Run where I hope and pray “recovery” would mean getting over sore muscles and this annoying cold.

MORE GOOSEBUMPS FROM TBR DREAM 2011

This morning, as I was preparing for TBR Dream 2012 (yes, you all know plans are underway) I went through all the stories sent in by TBR Dream Marathoners 2011.  Woah, I got goosebumps from reading about how our little dream of a race had made such a significant impact in their lives.  Here are bits and pieces of some of the stories sent in…(To the runners who sent their stories in, thank you so much! I wasn’t able to reply to each one, but I surely will. Just give me time to sift through my Inbox!)

There is nowhere in the world where one runs a marathon in a more loving and nurturing environment than in the TBR DM. The pacers, the dream chasers, the hydration station attendants, the organizers, the fellow runners, the families, the onlookers, everyone was cheering at us and buoying our spirits up, as if our dream-come-true is theirs too. Some runners faltered along the way, labored painfully, grappled with injuries, struggled with each mile, but these people kept them on, pushed them literally…Each of us runners were facing our own bout but we moved as if we were one spirit, straining into one direction and wanting every comrade of the road to finish too. In the TBR DM, everyone who crosses the finish line is a winner and everyone who steps on the thin line that defines a marathoner owns the limelight to himself. There was no competition there, only a contest against oneself, and there, we conquered. And as we did, our families and friends and supporters roared and hugged and held because our victory became theirs. (For full story, click HERE.)

Anton Badiola
I practically threw out any plans of targeting a particular finish time and just cherish every kilometer and enjoy the great company. We had a blast every time Coach Jim would pass us by with his motorcycle shouting loudly and egg us to move on. We would talk about how this year’s edition of TBR Marathon was setup from the Bull Sessions, Talks, Send-Off Party and the marathon itself. With all the exceptional things given to us by the TBR Team, it seemed like Jaymie paid us to do the marathon – it was just that good.

– Anton Badiola

TBR Dream Marathon 2011, race day… I describe it as one HELLISH experience but I don’t mind doing it all over again. There were a lot of emotions from the start, pains and soreness along the way, but crossing that finish line gave me and every participant an inexplicable feeling that would make one cry and smile at the same time. I’d like to thank Jaymie and the entire TBR Dream Team. TBR Dream Marathon is the best marathon setting anyone could ever ask for. We appreciate all the time, efforts, and sacrifices you’ve done in making this happen. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion with us. I pray to God that He may bless you abundantly for you to be able to continue this good deed and help more runners in the future.

– Mike Janeo

Donna
TEARS OF ELATED JOY.  That is how I would describe my feeling as I ran the last few hundred meters to the finish line.  The last few meters to the finish line just kept repeating in my mind, it was truly a EUPHORIC MOMENT for me. When Joy & I saw the sign 42K, she told me she will run ahead and she will see me at the finish line.  The moment she ran ahead of me I just could’nt stop running, I kept going and going and going and I was crying already.  Good thing I was wearing shades so my tears were not easily seen.  It was just me who crossed the finish line when I saw the TIMEX clock 6:48 (as I recall) so it was a glorious MOMENT indeed!  And you know what the BEST part was? Just a few steps near the finish line, my eldest son JAVIER approached me, HELD MY HAND and gave me a big smile and TOGETHER we crossed the finish line.  Then my youngest son, ENZO gave me hug and it was just a PERFECT moment.

All Dream Marathoners were acknowledged by the host as we crossed the finish line. I felt like a Hollywood star, cameras flashing and the host gave me a compliment that I still looked FRESH even after running the TOUGH 42K.  Then the TBR medal was placed on me and I surely felt like a REAL WINNER, whoohoohoo!!!

– Donna Gojo-Segunial

Gail
I’ve been treated like a “fragile being” by family and friends who cared about me — so many things I shouldn’t eat or do, just because I had asthma. When I was rushed to the ER and a doctor tells me my asthma was back (and with vengeance), I was told I can never take part in any endurance sport ever again — I was told I can never run. But finishing your marathon defied all odds. I was able to complete 42.2km even when they told me I could not. (Click HERE for full story)

– Gail Villanueva

To most serious runners, finishing a marathon in 7:51 may be something to scoff at. But I hold my head high. I, after all, finished! More than gunning for a faster time, it was the experience that mattered most. So all those tears were all about being surrounded by happy, shiny people who have nothing but my best interest in their hearts, thus making my first marathon worth running, despite the pain.

– Dittie Galang

I’m thinking of setting up a website just to hold all of the stories from TBR Dream Marathon.  For TBR Dream Alumni, it would be a great site to look back on.  And, for those who dream of something bigger in their lives, it would be a great place to draw inspiration from.  Soon!
