Rexona Run and Coach Rio’s Innovations

Wednesday, 23 June 2010  |  Race Announcements

Back from the Rexona Run Presscon at Taste Asia, SM Mall of Asia. I was looking forward to this event since Coach Rio gave me a teaser last week about the race as well as a big surprise that he was going to unveil.

First off, Rexona Run details:

Rexona Run flyer back

When: 1 August 2010, Sunday
Where: SM Mall of Asia
Distance/Fee:

  • 3k – P400
  • 5k – P600
  • 10k – P600
  • 21k – P750

Race kits will include: singlet, bib, D-tag, 150ml Rexona Men Sport Defence aerosol
Registration: June 28 to July 19, 2010
Reg Centers: ROX, Bonifacio High Street and Timex Stores (SM MOA, SM North Edsa, SM Southmall, SM Megamall, Glorietta)

It’s a fast and flat course. Can you hear PR’s already?

Secondly, Coach Rio’s big surprise/s which will be applied with Rexona Run first and all other Runrio races:

  • Use of D-Tag – This is a new, disposable RFID strip of paper that will be attached to the shoe lace to record the runner’s time. This was used at New York City Marathon last year. It is lighter and more accurate than most timing devices.
  • IMG_3586
    – Coach Rio presents the D-tag.  He will also have other similar devices for cycling and triathlon.  He will also have the B-tag, which is an RFID code on the race bib –

  • Registration via ipad – Registration for races will now be paperless and will be done via ipad at the above mentioned registration centers. With the new software, runners type in their own data to avoid errors in encoding as in previous races. Once encoded, this will be stored in the system and will eliminate the need for runners to fill up registration forms for all other runrio races.  Another benefit of this is that, in the long run, the system will provide runners with a list of previous races and official results. In time, Coach Rio said that they can provide rankings per age category.

    – Jun, Aljo and Bobby tinkering with the ipad –

  • Runrio Membership Card – Upon registration for Rexona Run, runners will get a Runrio membership card which will entitle them to discounts at retail stores and to earn points.
  • IMG_3591

  • Portable and Convenient Water Bottle – SM Sure Buy will launch its new water bottle to be deployed at Rexon Run water stations. It can be opened with a poke of the finger (although we suggest the marshals open it already for runners) and the bottle can be carried by the runner during the race for regular sips.

Cool eh? I don’t know about you, but I’m sure to sign up for Rexona Run!

Greenfield Sunset Run 2010

TBR Race Review: The Greenfield Sunset Run 2010

Rating:
3Medals
Organizers: Finish Line

THUMBS UP:

  • out-of-town sunset run as a unique concept
  • majority of the roads (specifically within Greenfield City and Pramana Village) were wonderful to run on
  • ample floodlights throughout the dark roads
  • mobile system throughout the route blasting music
  • use of timing chip
  • free transportation to Greenfield City
  • festive post-race atmosphere
  • bands after the race
  • discounts at outlet stores
  • kids play area

BETTER JOB NEXT TIME:

  • lack of water at one station
  • vehicles and motorcycles entered a portion of the course
  • some roads were dusty and polluted
  • late start
  • heavy traffic entering and exiting race

The idea of an out-of-town sunset run conjures images of fresh air, a calm breeze, and wide, open roads for runners to tread on. The Greenfield Sunset Run provided all that for the most part of the 21km race, but gave the runners a tough challenge during the last kilometers with lack of water at stations, dusty and polluted roads, and cars lining the latter part of the course.

Thankfully, the race ended with a fun, festive atmosphere, one that was enough to make this runner forget about the difficulties of the race and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow runners in a much deserved late dinner.

WHAT WAS I THINKING?

Early that day I spoke for three long hours at a workshop, had a tiny bowl of Minestrone for lunch, rushed to dress the kids and leave them at the in-laws forgetting completely about merienda. At 5:30 PM, as hubby and I, along with a wonderfully large group of running friends we happened to bump into at the race, I realized I was in for some big trouble.

Start

– with JunC & Mariel (Solemates), Jay (Prometheus Cometh), Aljo, Raymund (Rain Man), Bobby, Hubby, Art and Little Kulit Runner in front –

I glanced at my watch. Ran the numbers. And told the hubby: “If we do your 9 run: 1 walk intervals, we may finish in 2 hours 30 mins right?” Hubby nodded his head. I shook mine. “Oh no, we’ll finish at 8! I am going to get hungry!”

With that, the race started. And I ran it off with a smile. Bahala na. That’s what I get for not being in full race mode and completely forgetting that a night race was different from the morning races I was so accustomed to.

EASY DOES IT

Hubby and I ran with Bobby and Raymund in the early part of the race. The course was awesome. The roads were wide and traffic-free, the sky was dim and the weather cool, a strong breeze didn’t allow us to break a sweat.

As in the past training runs, every 9 minutes, I would yell “WALK!” and we would all slow to a walk and start yakking away. After a minute, we would proceed to run in silence.

AND THE GROUP GETS BIGGER…

We passed several TBR Dream Marathoners along the way. And, almost like evangelists (or party list representatives if you want to be more relevant), we would encourage them to join us and try the run:walk intervals.

JV, hubby’s officemate, started running with us but decided to go his own pace after a few kilometers. Then, we bumped into Ricky who joined our pace group. Then, for a while, Dra. Lora who is part of the organizing committee of Runew, and Macky ran along with us.

AND THE RUN GETS TOUGHER

It was smooth sailing for us all throughout the first 15km. We actually struggled to keep our pace slow and steady at 6:30 min/km as we often found ourselves running at 6 to 6:15.

As the sky turned to black and the roads became narrower and filled with cars, the run doubled in difficulty.

At around 15km, I stopped at a water station only to discover they had run out of water. Of all times to leave my hydration belt behind! I yelled to hubby “What do I do with no water now?” And, as expected, he held out his water bottle for me to drink.

By the last 3km, cars started to fill both lanes of the road. A motorcyle from behind almost sideswiped me. Strike 2, I thought. Hubby and I managed to find humor in the situation as it was deja vu of The Great Lapu-Lapu Run in Cebu, where the last 3k was troubled by traffic, and a motorcyle had almost hit me as well.

Runners were forced to run on the middle of the road, so our group was in a single-line formation. By the time we stopped at the next water station (which had water already), our group was down to three. Just hubby, Bobby, and myself.

HAPPY FINISH

We crossed the finish at 2:26. It was one of our slowest runs. Once we stopped, my legs turned to lead with the lactic-acid build up. I knew that this was due to the fact that I didn’t run at my natural pace, forcing myself to run along with the group’s pace. This was fine, a happy consequence of running with a fine group of runners.

The other runners from our pace group arrived. First Ricky, then Macky. Macky was on cloud 9 as he beat his PR by a whopping 20 minutes! (Thanks for the email and photo, Macky.  Congrats again!)

Macky
– Macky writes: This boosted my confidence that I will be able to finish the full marathon come May 22. I must admit there have been doubts but each small achievement(s) helps me to soldier on. –

Raymund was nowhere in sight. It turned out that he felt lightheaded midway through the run (most probably due to hunger) and was compelled to walk instead.

RUNNERS’ DINNER

With no Sunday morning activities to rush to like the regular morning race, most of us had time for a well-deserved dinner. A large group of us, most of my best running friends, shared an awful Japanese dinner over some fantastic runner’s chatter. A great way to end yet another running adventure.

Dinner
– awful food over great dinner with friends –

Globe Run for Home 2010

TBR RACE REVIEW: GLOBE RUN FOR HOME 2010

Organizer: Finishline

Rating:
4Medals

THUMBS UP:

  • New assembly area. First time a race started in Ayala Triangle.
  • Challenging route.
  • Overflowing water and Powerade at stations. Sponges were plentiful!
  • Timing chip.
  • Great set up for post-race booths and events.

BETTER JOB NEXT TIME:

  • Inaccurate kilometer markers
  • Distance was too long for 21k
  • No medal???

The unique race start and course was the best selling point of the Globe Run for Home 2010. Sure enough, I was sold!

With the assembly area at Tower One along Ayala Ave., the race felt like a world-class urban run, much like Singapore’s Standard Chartered Marathon at Esplanade. The run through the city’s narrow roads and Greenbelt’s tunnel was a new experience for runners. Although the course was similar to the usual course for past races, the route took runners from Ayala towards Bonifacio Global City, instead of the other way around. Who knew that running the route from the other end could be so different?!

Congratulations to Globe and Finishline for a good race!

LOST IN LIMBO LAND

I was goal-less for this race and it was awful. As I stood in the 21k race start with the hubby, I thought about my target pace and time. It was absolutely frightening that my mind was completely blank.  I didn’t know if I was going to run easy or hard, with hubby and Lit or solo, with music or not.  All I knew was that I looked forward to running long again after so much time off.

GOODBYE PR, HELLO FUN

After the first few kilometers, I pretty much knew this was not gonna be a PR run.  I just didn’t have it in me nor did my legs. Still, I didn’t run too easy either.  I had yet to burn the extra pounds from HK, remember?

I had a lot of fun running through this course. Highlights for me were the Greenbelt portion and the longer-than-usual route inside Heritage Park. It was nice bumping into friends throughout the race, especially Bataan Death March finishers, Charlie and Alvin.  While I suffered from legs that hadn’t fully recovered from HK Marathon, these two looked so strong, you wouldn’t think they had just survived a 102km ultramarathon a couple of weeks before.

HAPPY FINISH

I finished with an unofficial time of 2:11 (excluding my bathroom break at Jollibee). My Garmin recorded a distance of 22.3km, which I can’t rely on as I lost GPS signal at the race start and in the Greenbelt area.  It wasn’t the best time, but I thoroughly enjoyed the long run.

Globe

LIKE A KID AGAIN

As I waited for hubby, I bumped into highschool classmates Jennie of Bautech and Tintin. As all highschool friends are, we talked about the past.  But, we also touched a bit on the future, specifically our next goal races.  Turns out the two of them are joining SuBIT (Subic Triathlon) on May 1.  Ooooh boy, just the thought gave me goosebumps, but it got me excited about a new goal!  Should I?  Can I?  Hmmm, will I?  I’ll decide by the end of this week!  (Anyone got a bike to loan me?)
